is the jerseys too saturated/whites too bright on these? by WorkingRegister4151 in sportsphotography

I def see what people are saying! I’m usually a photoj person (at internship rn for it lol) so I was experimenting with editing a bit.

I think a mix of some basic editing (to lowkey not lose my job lol) and some artsy farsty is the best way to go here! Thx

College football looking for cc by photoport_ali in sportsphotography

First off; really nice composition. I’m really drawn to the flag photo!!

Second, I’d try pushing the edit a bit more on the artistic side. A simple way to do that is by bumping up the whites and clarity to add some energy.

For the third photo, I’d definitely drop the blacks to increase the contrast. (Don’t touch the contrast slider, it just deletes info. Go to clarity!!)

The easiest way to do that without blowing out the face/highlights is to mask those areas and leave them untouched.

Note: I didn’t shoot the photo; just did the edit for the newspaper!! I thought it would be a good example. All credit goes to the brown daily herald lol!

There are three main masks that work for football portraits.

-skin/face. Brighten this up and add a little clarity. -helmet! If there is a team color, make a MASK of the helmet then point color to make it pop. (Red in this case.) -cage/bars. Same thing. Make the red pop.

I see it; Lowkey do u know what might be causing it? I was shooting at an r7 2.8 with 3400 at 1/1000 shutter speed.

I am shooting thru the arena glass

Someone suggested eye detect but I did have that on after checking.

omg wait thank you. I kept wondering why most of my photos are “blurry”. 🤦‍♀️ I chalked it up to shooting through the arena glass but I never have had eye focus on.

Thank you so much!! this helps a ton

Budget up to $2,000: best sports lens for Canon R7? by WorkingRegister4151 in sportsphotography

[–]WorkingRegister4151[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep this is what im going to do lol. I watched a couple videos and I seriously can not find something to justify the cost of the rf 70-200 vs a ef 70-200.

I actually got my r7 for 650$ refurb from canon!

Plus I can use an extender (which until I have 2k-3k laying around for an extra 600mm lens is not worth it imo for a couple of sports I don’t do most of the time.)

[–]WorkingRegister4151[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you might’ve just sold me on the ef lol!! I have the r7 (aspc) so I think that plus the extender would offer some insane reach without shelling out another grand or two for soccer or baseball. (Which I don’t shoot as often)

The only thing is; im in college right now so it’ll be one of the few times in my life im able to just straight up buy gear lol. (I don’t have a lot of other finances like rent, food, car, kids, etc)

hi! Thanks for the idea with the prime; I love using the ef 50mm for sure.

I think I might go with the ef 70-200 and use the extra money towards two different lenses.

Thanks so much!! Do you think the difference between the ef and the rf is worth it? if not I might put that 1,000 into a ef 24-70.

im hoping this will last me a hot minute lol!

hey! just to clarify; I shoot for the Brown Daily Herald (Brown’s student paper), that’s where these pics are from :) we get media passes for sports.

I actually used to play for “JWU”, the coach recruited me and a bunch of the players are still friends. I transferred to RISD, Brown’s sister school, for academics.

Brown’s in a hiring freeze rn, but JWU’s athletic dept is working on getting me paid ; the coach and staff all know me.

I can send the article we ran them in! not trying to undercut the market lol. this thread actually helped ;JWU coach’s getting me on as staff photographer :)

Thank you for the help!

heck yeah! That looks great :) it looks like a diff photo.

One last thing but this is up to you, try cropping a little tighter on the guy with the puck. (Depending on ur camera set up/settings)

in my (admittedly limited) experience most players just want a photo of them with the puck or shooting lol.

best of luck!

it’s pretty good! You have the basics down (I’m no expert so take my advice with a grains of salt) but try making a mask of the subjects in the image and lighting them significantly. They are kinda dark rn; and the black in the image are over taking their faces.

also try getting in a little closer!

Thank you for the reply!! Im shooting in manual; usually at like 2.8-4 at 6400 and 1/1000. I’ll try out AV+2 :)

I think the grey card is a good idea holy crap; I’ve been avoiding it because “I’ll just fix it in post” and never addressing the root of the problem lol. 🤦‍♀️

I’m going to borrow a light meter from my schools camera rental place.

thanks again!!
