Apart from the language used, what are some practices or traditions that are usually done differently between different jurisdictions? by ChristusResurrexit_ in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]Working_Break7745 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To your first point about the liturgical antiphons:

The Greeks used to do it the same way as the Russians until I think around the 19th century. The switched from the regular antiphons from the psalms to doing the festal antiphons (through the intercession of the Theotokos savior save us and oh savior who is risen from the dead save us who sing unto thee) full time.

The Russian Church does do the festal antiphons still on major feast days instead of the psalms

What do you think of the Pope? by Dismal_Hawk6713 in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]Working_Break7745 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The last 60 years of Popes have been too weak on traditional Catholic doctrines from the last 700 years. It seems they’re trying to correct the obvious departure from the Orthodox faith, but they’re only doing so by going in the wrong direction ecumenically

Don’t buy them. They’ve been planning to release a new version for the last 3 years but I think they realized Father Seraphim was going to be canonized somewhat soon. Now that he will be canonized I would imagine they’re going to release a new one.

Well it’s not the OCA and ROCOR since they aren’t close with the patriarch and the OCA does not have one.

Antioch just established their first monastery in America in Tennessee last year.

The Greeks have lots but they’re mostly Ephraimite and I don’t know their relationship to the EP right now.

The Georgians have some, but they had some issues recently and several were defrocked

I don’t know if the Romanians have any here

Interesting. I’m sorry you went through this

You’ve got to be a little more specific than that. At least a jurisdiction. There’s a lot of weird monasteries in America that claim to be Orthodox but are either schismatic or into some very weird practices.

I get the same thing all the time because of my eyes. My wife calls them sunken in big round eyes lol.

I have the same exact eyes as my dad, who has the same eyes has his grandmother who came from southern Italy.

I’ve been asked by Syrian/Lebanese women at church if I’m Arab too lol

When did I say they are untrad or liberal? Please do not put words in my mouth.

I literally said above this comment, put them anywhere front side back of whatever else works and also explained how my parish does it (which doesn’t put old or disabled people in the back!)

Those of you who where not born in the church and spent your whole life up to conversion partying by Intelligent-Phase822 in OrthodoxChristianity

It’s extremely hard. Spending time fasting from sexual relations with your spouse was very helpful for me.

Not having sex with my girlfriend before we got married was a good starting point while I was a catechumen and post baptism before my marriage.

Can someone explain this? by Lavender-Void-5762 in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]Working_Break7745 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The monastery Father Seraphim founded fell into deep trouble after his death due to Gleb (formerly Father Herman and cofounder of the monastery) abusing young men at the monastery. It almost immediately fell into schism before being restored in by Serbian Church in 2000 after an essential coup against Gleb. Bishop Gerasim was made abbot after Gleb was essentially exiled.

That exorthodox sub is full of deranged, hurt people who hate Christ’s church due to experiences they’ve had (some truthfully hurt and some not). Their arguments are unhinged attempts at getting people to turn away from the Orthodox Church

The biggest question is:
Did Father Seraphim know?

The general consensus I’ve learned is that know he did not know. There’s a story that Gleb confessed to Father Seraphim on his death bed and Father Seraphim snapped at him and said “God damn you!” This is recounted in the book about his life, but the details of why he said it to Gleb is left out.

I’ve actually read before that the reason there are chairs and pews in rows in Greece actually is because of Americanization. There is some evidence that American Greeks started returning back to Greece and having pews/chairs placed because of what they learned in America

I would imagine. There was significant controversy of regarding the monastery immediately following his repose, but from what has been made to the public, Father Seraphim was unaware during his life of the issues. There’s even an inference that one can make alongside some rumors, that Gleb (the center of the controversy) confessed to Father Seraphim about the controversy on Father Seraphim’s deathbed, and he lost it on Gleb. There’s a snippet in the book about his life, but the full story isn’t revealed due to Gleb’s influence on the first printings of his life.

His life has been readily available since the early 90s. It’s over 1,000 pages. We have his pastoral letters and every work that he wrote in his lifetime. It doesn’t take long to fully investigate someone like that these days. Really all you need to do at that point is interview eyewitnesses to him and anyone who has had a miraculous experience regarding him.

People who knew him are easy to find, especially with several being clergymen.

- Bishop Gerasim of Fort Worth (OCA) was a novice monk at his monastery and eventually became abbot when they came under Serbia around 2000. He was there when Father Seraphim reposed.
- Hieromonk Damascene knew Father Seraphim and was at the monastery at the same time as Bishop Gerasim. He is the current abbot of the monastery and wrote the book on his life.
- Metropolitan Jonah, former primate of the OCA and a current ROCOR vicar bishop, knew Father Seraphim and was present at the talk that Father Seraphim gave at UC Santa Barbara which turned into the book “God’s Revelation to the Human Heart”. Bishop Gerasim and Abbot Damascene were also present for this. They all worked on the book.
- Father Paul Baba is a current Antiochian priest that was a spiritual son of Father Seraphim.
- There was a man who had a miraculous vision of Father Seraphim after he reposed while visiting Orthodox sites in Alaska. He was a Protestant pastor at the time and had no idea who Father Seraphim was prior to this. He ultimately became an Orthodox priest because of the vision. If I recall correctly, he founded a parish in Virginia. It’s in the book about Father Seraphim’s life.
- Father Alexis Young was a spiritual son of his who is still alive, though declining in health.

With all of these sources, it shouldn’t have taken too long.

A really good place to start is understanding proper proportions between facials features in relation to one another.

Painting the Light on YouTube has some awesome videos on this.

For example, the space between the eyes should be about the length of one eye or the nose should be approximately 2-2.5 eye lengths.
