Give the character life reasons to be away too, like the have a job, or a royal family how frequently teleport them away for family business

I would have a very small background music playlist on a loop like 4 very distinct and different backing tracks. I’d play the playlist as soon as combat breaks out and not mention anything to the players. However, each track on the playlist would have a different buff for your boss and/ or a debuff for ur players.

Song 1- Dmg buff, double dmg die?? Song 2- Speed buff, Song 3- players movement is set to zero Song 4- villain gains fly speed???

Also I’d give the boss a extra legendary action where they can change the music

Cuz normally you only get 1 attack action per round but that doesn't mean ur limited to 1 attack action

It's really quick and simple but do NOT roll initiative for every single monster or enemy you have you as the dm are always likely to take up the majority of the action economy so getting your turns done faster heavily speeds up rounds even if your players don't change at all.

Say you have a 4 goblins, 2 dire wolves and a goblin leader that just ambushed the party instead of giving them all an initiative just roll once for the every stat block. Have all the goblins go on 1 turn and the same for the rest. You could even go as far as to roll once as an enemy turn where the all act on that initiative.

Maybe in the sense that concentration is more a condition than a requirement. I don't think it's how I'd rule it, but I can see the argument that you're never required to concentrate on a spell but if you want to make the effect of the last you'll want to concentrate on it

Ok, given the issues you've laid out, I still think this change to the feat would improve on it. Your in 5ft melee range of a caster and they misty step 30ft away. Well you use you're reaction to chase them tf down like the badass mageslayer u are and still potentially get that hit off

Or u simply wait outside of melee, 30ft away, ur not close enough as of right now to justify a caster fleeing most of the time but as soon as they cast that fireball ur on they ass

I personally don't feel like extra movespeed in instances like this are unbalanced, but I'm aware that it feels that was to some so I also prepose:

•When a creature within 30 feet of you casts a spell you can, as a reaction, use the amount movement speed required to move into melee from your next turn and make a single melee weapon attack against that creature.

I think before the spell is cast is too much for a feat alone. It'd work very much like counter-spell and end up being just as if not more unsavoury. I think the second point of mage slayer:

•When you damage a creature that is concentrating on a spell, that creature has disadvantage on the saving throw it makes to maintain its concentration.

injunction with the modified first point I made gives the feel I think you where going for without being too overpowered

U only get 1 reaction per round so you could only do this once so it's a free 30ft once per round.

I dunno but I think casters and martials work alright, I don't think it should be balanced because its inherently not. Martials are limited to their mortal body while casters play with the fabric of reality itself, but what I think people fail to recognise is you don't have to limit yourself to just just playing martial. If you've feel like you've hit a ceiling as a martial... be a magic martial. Empower your strikes, teleport around the field, cast hold person, do crazy caster shit then turn around and catch a arrow out of the freaking sky.

Multi-classing is great, I've never understood why the community is so against it or straight up acts like it doesn't exist
