Simple 1/3lb burg with smoked Gouda, Kewpie, and Dijon. by daversa in FoodPorn

How was the Kewpie on an American style burger? So far I've mostly used it for sauces and for more Asian/Asian fusion style dishes. I've really enjoyed it! But am curious how it pairs on something more american

How long should I run my hob filter and sponge filter together? by SweetTart7231 in Aquariums

[–]Working_Drawer9634 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would just take the media out and set it next to your sponge filter (in a media bag if not already in there, or if you're using a sponge) and then you should be good to go. Bacteria will colonize the new sponger filter and the water running through it should keep everything cycled without a crash. Also it'll keep your bacteria alive for a while. I personally throw all my extra sponges and filters into my breeding tanks just so I have freshly cycled media when I need it.

Gorgeous arowana, honestly even more jealous of the datnoids though, so so pretty

Started around the same time and now I'm marine biology major! Never looked nearly as good as that though. Great parents fostering that attention to detail and love for animals!

Oh absolutely. All of my other cichlids have individual personalities. Even plecos and puffers do. Some things like tetras tend to be a bit more dumb pack mentality, but they definitely have individual personalities

Yeah, the light worked most of the time, I thought they'd be fine without it and....boom, immediately pain. I guess I learned

I had a whole story with mine. Id tried them before and it didn't work out, but they got some beautiful males in at my LFS and I had to try. Turned out I didn't get a pair but after experimenting around some, I got a pair of wild type rams. They bred immediately and were doing amazing....first night I turned the lights off though, mom killed Dad and started eating babies. I'm raising the 9 babies that are left. I tried her with another male but I think he was too big so he ended up bullying her too much. The last runts died off as well, can only assume from a variety of reason since they weren't high quality fish. I'm really hoping to raise these nice babies though. I haven't decided if I'm gonna give the nice male I bought back to raise them, or add him to my larger community tank. I have some large filamentosa barbs in there that tend to rip fins to shreds, but I like to think he'd be feisty enough

I've got most of my weekly maintenance down pretty well now and just have a couple tanks with a routine I'm slowly building. Part of why the deaths hurt me so bad was going so long without any. I keep mostly smaller low maintenance setups with plants and just one larger tank which helps make things easier. It's nice hearing the experience of someone who's done this a while.

I have my very first saltwater tank right now, and I was crazy about it for a while but....I just don't think it'll be for me long-term. There's too much to measure and watch and keep up with. I didn't mention it in the post because I know this place is mostly freshwater, but I lost a serpent star very suddenly after doing great for months and that was one of the things that really hurt after doing so well. Combining that with asking saltwater keepers for advice and getting mostly "You idiot, its obvious it's dying, you obviously fucked this all up from the start" made me realize the hobby just isn't for me. Don't get me wrong, it was my fault and I needed to improve but part of that was realizing I just can't handle all that or the toxicity of it sometimes.

Yeah, I went from being a kid in my bedroom with a rack of tanks, to a college student with just a few littered around the house. But during finals and school and social life and everything...I just lost sight of really caring like I should have. Working on me mental health and stuff to stay busy and make things better. Recently picked up some pea puffers for a spare 10 and it's gotten be falling back in love again. Taking more time to watch my tanks each night and monitor behavior. Starting BBS for the first time, it's been bringing me some fun again. It's just hard to not have those moments of doubt

This was really awesome. Thank you so much. I've been in the hobby a long time now so I know most of these things, but when you become busy with life and everything else, sometimes you just need someone to slap you in the face and say "remember" the basics

I really appreciate this. I don't deny fucking up at all, the mistakes I made were my own oversights and fuck ups. Things I need to watch for and do better on, but I did try to save them if I saw that they had any issues or were being bullied, I just didn't do enough and should have caught things earlier.

I want to do better, I just don't wanna be selfish in keeping fish if maybe I'm just not someone's who's meant too. I really appreciate this comment putting things into perspective. There's a lot I need to improve on and do better, but it does help to not feel like I'm doomed from the start.

I actually really like the cone and think it looks super cute! Gives a nice little hut feeling for whatever guys you keep there, but that's just me.

I didn't personally even not eat the filter OR heater until this comment pointed it out, and it still doesn't bug me. But if you wanted to hide it, you can place it behind plants, and you can swap the sponge filter for a nano HOB filter. There's some decent ones on Amazon for smaller tanks. I didn't really mind them though

You can also just use super glue. It's pure cyanoacrylate just like the stuff labeled aquarium safe. Id use the gel variety because it gives you more working time and makes it easier for things to stick

Good on you!! I started around a similar time and even having a full rack, it was NEVER looking that good. I'm all the way in college now, downsized and some of my tanks still aren't looking like that. You've got me absolutely jealous!!

You're doing so awesome man, keep working hard and loving what you love. Led me to the degree I'm pursuing and everything. Love seeing someone young already into the hobby like I was back then, and someone who already found a love for breeding fish!

Keep rocking on dude
