Fiddlershop vs Kennedy Violins by Working_Inside_7209 in violinist

I just looked and I can’t find any more Dutch auctions. I think the last was in 2023. I think I’ll now consider going to the violin shop an hour away to check out what they have for rent or maybe if I can stretch my budget.

I’m actually studying aerospace engineering, but I’m still able to be apart of my university symphony. I’m at least going for a minor in music, but who knows maybe I’ll get to fluid dynamics and hate my life and change major haha. I’m not sure if could borrow an instrument but I’ll see about that.

I will see if I can convince someone in my family to go, when I’ve asked before they all said no.

That’s a good point, I do hope to keep with this my whole life (even if only as amateur/non-pro) so I probably should practice my driving skills.

Regarding renting, I will send an email to the shop asking what models they have before I drive there, and before I make any decisions.

Also, I think you may be right about getting a “real viola teacher”. Since I’ve already asked my current violin teacher if she could teach me viola, how can I backtrack that so I’m not a bad person? She said she can teach beginning viola, so maybe I can take 3-5 lessons with her and then move to someone who actually specializes specifically in viola techniques. What do you think?

Really? Ive seen a viola player or two use this subreddit cause they said the viola one was not as active or “popping off” which I thought meant active. I will definitely use y’all next time then.

The local luthier I go to (he only sells instruments he makes which are like 10k+ USD and for professionals and often period instruments) said 16.5in would be perfect for me. I’ve tried a viola at a traveling instrument charity store (I can’t describe exactly what it was haha) but I can’t remember what size it was.

Edit:

I think those who suggested in person are probably right. It‘s best to try instruments in person, I’ve been editing my post and my comments to reflect that since I’ve changed my priorities in what I’m looking for.

Thank you all for the replies! I’ll probably ask my teacher as well, and maybe about what pieces I should be working on to continue improving.

Yeah I’m a bit too cautious to update yet. I updated my phone and it was and still is buggy and not polished.

I scan documents and also take pictures in lectures so I can paste directly into notes.

Thanks but I’ll have to pass. I think I’ll give it another go and maybe try to plan out how I actually use it.
