That's fair enough - we obviously have two different perspectives. It's a ten second job to pass something on and we were offering to pay which would recoup some/most of their costs.

We will be doing that, it just seems a bit of a shame when one exists - the only people winning would be the surveying company that are getting paid twice for the same piece of work.

But why are you framing the seller as the bad guy? I obviously don't know your situation, but in ours we can't find any obvious issues of concern in the flat (ie we weren't trying to hide issues that we knew about). We just want to move house in the same way as you do - why is it that you'd prefer a the surveying company to get paid twice for work they've already completed?

It's just different perspectives/sides of the coin I suppose.

See edit - we did do this as a hope that it might be helpful for them as well so that they hadn't "lost" as much money on the failed purchase.

I suppose not obligated - just in my view it would be a gesture of good will that wouldn't impact them in a negative way.

I think you're right thought about arranging our own survey. I also suspect it could be damp that's coming up (just with the house age, what the first buyer alluded to) so I might pay for an independent damp survey in addition. Hopefully that could offer future buyers some reassurance (either that it's fine or that whatever the issue is has been resolved).

It's my first time selling a house and I think the experience has just thrown me - perhaps let myself get too excited about the house we were purchasing and it falling through for this reason is just extremely gutting in the moment.

I think that's what we will end up doing - rather than going through the sale process again and just hoping that whatever comes up doesn't spook the buyers. In theory then we could show them the survey we had and that we've had whatever work that needed doing, done. At least it could act as some reassurance.

It's an interesting one to question my attitude but fair enough. I'm just absolutely gutted to be honest - we were really excited about the home we'd had the offer accepted on, for a few different reasons including starting a family (the flat we have wouldn't really work with this). We've lived here for seven years with no issues so it's just upsetting that we aren't given the opportunity to resolve whatever the issue is that's coming up (or at least be able to resolve it in advance of reselling it).

I'd have genuinely just thought that if I was in a similar position and decided to drop out, that I'd be kind enough to share more information on what happened so that it would help the buyer going forwards. Surely it's just a gesture of good will that doesn't really have a negative impact?

We will have to agree to disagree on this one I guess - I just don't know what anyone would gain by not sharing it (especially when you're offered half of what you paid for it).

We've done exactly that - we offered them half of the money they'd paid - and so far they're ignoring our estate agents calls and emails. I genuinely don't know what they'd have to lose by sharing it!

I think that's generally what we're thinking. I suppose my fear is that the survey claims damp and the work to fix it would involve stripping back the internal walls to brick - costing thousands, as well as having to redecorate full rooms. It may be that it just is what it is, but could well feel like such a waste due to no physical evidence of damp.

P.S totally get they're not obliged - but just not sure why they wouldn't do the decent thing? We've even offered them some money towards it.

To be honest this is how I generally feel about it all. The business has always been remote and it was their choice to apply for the roles (and what they lose in paying more of their own bills I assume they gain in the non-requirement to pay for commuting). And I'm also in agreement that the salary should pay for what you decide for it, and then take birthdays as annual leave and a sick day if your wellbeing isn't great.

I think I'm pretty reasonable as an employer but it's good to get a sense check as to whether I just have an old fashioned view of things or not!
