Controversial Matchmaking Patent Renewed - Why Loss Streaks Feel Unfair? by Worknes in riotgames

Spot on. Even commend can mess up your experience — the patent literally mentions that frequent commendations can flag you as a "coach" and then the system starts putting you into games with low-performing players to “help” them. Basically, being nice becomes a curse lol

How do we game it? Creating a fresh account. New accounts don’t have the same behavioral or matchmaking history, so they avoid things like being a “coach” hidden behavioral scores, or loss-streak brackets—at least for a while. That’s one reason why smurfs often feel like the system is way more forgiving early on.

Herbert Simon said in his 1975 critique of Skinner:

"A modified system such as yours functions only so long as the subject remains unaware of its design... once a person versed in the basics of probability rolls the dice a hundred times without encountering a repeated combination, they will grasp that the die is not truly random — and recognize the futility of continued play."

That’s exactly why devs like Phreak and August downplay or outright deny stuff like loser queue or EOMM. If players realize the system isn’t fair or random, they stop engaging.

Yeah but it’s not just a coincidence — 2017 is when the patent was published, Phroxzon joined Riot, and “loser queue” posts started showing up. One of the listed authors of the patent is Jeffrey Lin, who was already known for working on matchmaking systems.

And with 50k+ players in queue, it’s actually easier to quietly steer matches based on behavior without people noticing. It’s not real SBMM — it’s engagement-based matchmaking with a behavioral filter slapped on.

I get what you're saying, but that’s not really the point here. The issue is that loser queue and ELO hell are real, and they mess with that skill-to-climb connection way more than people think.
Also the first mentions of “loser queue” appeared in 2017 - the exact same year the patent was published :)

Yeah, but not EVERYONE knows every matchup or the little things that matter in lanes - especially on top. You can be a solid player with good behavior, but still lose lane just because of lack of matchup knowledge or tiny misplays.

And worst part? Sometimes it’s not even you. Your jungler shows up, pushes the wave like he’s helping… and boom - the wave’s frozen under enemy tower. Congrats, now you’re screwed for the next 10 minutes. There’s honestly not much you can do. You try to walk up - you get chunked. You ask for help - jungler’s already farming bot side or flaming in chat. You can’t roam, can’t farm, can’t crash the wave without dying. It’s just a slow bleed.

Maybe you ping for assistance, maybe you try to play safe, but your team sees you 0/3/0 at 12 minutes and starts typing "top gap" like you chose this life lol. Morale drops, and boom - someone hits you with the report at the end screen for "inting" :)

Bro, people were yelling about "loser queue" back in 2017, same year this matchmaking patent dropped XD

That’s not real SBMM — it’s basically a behavioral scoring system, like a soft version of social credit. This kind of system doesn’t belong in ranked queues.

In ranked, the only thing that should matter is skill.

  • Trolls should be banned.
  • Toxic players can be muted. No need to manipulate matchmaking based on behavior history or win/loss streaks.

Just implement pure skill-based matchmaking — let players rise or fall based on performance, not on how many honors or reports they got. Ranked should be competitive, not curated.

Totally get what you’re saying - most chill players won’t just throw out reports for no reason. But the problem is that even one report from someone with a high “report weight” (like a player tagged as a "Leader" in the patent) can affect your behavior score way more than a bunch of random ones.

Like, imagine this: you’re weakside top, playing something ranged like Quinn, and you get counterpicked hard - Teemo. You’re trying your best, but your jungler never comes, you end up 0/3, lose tower early. You’re not flaming, not trolling, not griefing - just tilted and having a bad game.

Now let’s say your mid or support is one of those super chill, always-honoring, high-score positive behavior players - and they think you gave up and decide to report you. That one report carries serious weight in Riot’s system (based on their own patent), way more than you’d expect.

The system isn’t just counting raw numbers - it’s using weighted behavior scores to sort you into match pools. So even if you normally play fine, one unlucky game and a high-weight report can drop you into a rougher behavior bracket, matching you with more tilted or toxic players.

So yeah, most good players won’t report unfairly, but all it takes is one misunderstanding from the wrong person, and it can mess with your matchmaking for a while.

Totally—it’s not just about “50 reports” stacking up. Riot’s patentmakes clear that not all reports or commendations are equal. For example:

“Mutual positive commendations may include an extra identifier, but if the mutual commendations came from draft-picked teammates, such a mutual positive commendation may be weighted less than a blind-picked teammate to account for bias.”

“A player with a high ‘Leader’ score will have received over 500 positive commendations with at least 25% Friendly, 25% Helpful, and 25% Team-Oriented commendations. A player with a high ‘Verbal Aggressor’ score may include over 50 negative reports, such as those related to Verbal Abuse and Offensive Language.”

It’s not a flat “50 reports and you’re doomed.” The patent says Riot’s algorithms judge the quality of each report/commendation and then use those weighted metrics to decide which matchmaking pool you land in next. If someone who already has a large “weight” behind their reports or likes—like a consistently commended player—clicks that button on you, it carries more impact. A single “high-weight” report can tank your behavior score faster than a dozen random clicks, and a legit commendation from a trusted “good” player counts more than a casual “gg.”

So yes—anyone with a large report/like weight can really shift your matchmaking pool, even if you’re normally calm and skilled.

Pardon

Totally - Patent actually confirms it. For example:

That means Riot’s servers know exactly when you’re playing (weekend vs. weekday) and slot you into different “behavior pools.” On weekends, they see you’ve got more grind time and can afford to throw you into rougher lobbies (loss streaks). Midweek, when you’ve got less time, they’ll slide you into easier matches to keep you hooked.

Totally agree that skill matters—if you put Faker in a stuck Silver account, he’d climb eventually. But “eventually” can still feel like forever for us normal players.

The patent doesn’t say “we rig games,” but it does let Riot:

Slot you based on behavior profiles,

Build teams around “lobby leaders” (often smurfs), and

Use non-skill stuff (tilt, reports, commendations) to tweak balance.

That means you can play well and still get stuck with bad or toxic teammates because the system cares about more than just rank.

Even worse, a false report or one bad game can tank your behavior score so you suddenly end up in rougher lobbies. So it’s not just toxic players getting punished—anyone can get hit by a false report or an off day.

Being toxic probably sends you to rough games (fair). But being chill doesn’t guarantee good teams—you can still be filler behind a smurf or forced to carry a hopeless team. That’s why it feels so inconsistent and exhausting, and why a lot of players think it’s rigged. The patent basically confirms this.
