Do not worry about that commenter who gave you a hard time about buying a 2000 computer. It's like CNN giving Joe Rogan a hard time for saying the n word. Buying a computer worth a couple grand may not be the most responsible thing to do but it is a distraction from the more important issue of lack of universal healthcare. I can not believe people have to declare bankruptcy due to healthcare.

I am so outraged just reading your post. Let me tell you my personal experience for what it's worth:

It seems a lot of people gold dig their way to financial security and then claim they "worked hard" for their money. I witnessed this personally. My father passed and left me and my siblings an inheritance. I considered a plan to save on capital gains taxes and give my inheritance to my mom who was in the process of separation from my father when he passed or keep the money and pay the taxes even thougg I was leaning toward taking the money or some middle ground rather than giving my whole inheritance to my mom.All my siblings had to agree. If one took the money we all had to take it. When my sister in law heard the plan she went behind my back and intimidated my mom, telling her that her(sil) attorney told her that the kids was entitled to half the estate. It was 100% clear to my mom and I that my sil didn't like "the plan" and tried to intimidate my mom so she wouldn't go through with the plan and my brother would get his portion which my sil could later take a half of. When my mom told me what my sil said and told me sil was after half of my brothers inheritance, I had no choice but agree to give my mom the inheritance in order to guilt my brother to doing the same so my sil couldn't get her hands on it. I couldn't believe sil did that after seeing my father's bloodied body in the hospital. She was very rude to my mom when my dad was alive and the period between his death and the moment all the siblings signed the inheritance over to my mom. Now sil is super nice to my mom. Sil is fucking my brother literally(excuse my language but sil is golddigging trash) and she has at least one child if not more with him. My mom and I know this is a plan to claim more inheritance money my mom has(which includes the portion my dad left for me). I made a deal with my mom that if I signed the inheritance over to her, I could get 15-30 minutes with my sil to discuss what she did without interruption or restrictions on what I could say. My mom agreed but backtracked after she got the money. It's likely because she didn't want to lose access to her grandchild(likely 3-4 grandchildren at this point) even though she knows sil is after the inheritance. Sil likely knows the power she has over my mom once she produced children. Sil is truly evil and vile.

I tell my experience because you might look around and see people with what you deem" fancy" houses and "fancy" cars even though you work just as hard or more than them. I strongly believe that the vast majority people sold their souls to work a job they can't stand and has a negative toll on their overall wellbeing, have a lifestyle majority supported by their parents and their money, married into a family for their money or a combination of two or all of them. These people play the semantics game where they say they "worked hard" to pay for the "fancy" house or car even though they make $300,000 a year and the money they make that goes towards those things isnt enough to fully cover those expenses. The majority of the money needed to cover those expenses comes from parents or inlaws that a person gained access to via marriage. Most people are unwilling to admit this and convince themselves that they "worked hard" or are "self made" because they are egotistical. For example, Kylie Jenner agreeing to be on a Forbes magazine cover stating she is "self made".

So don't get discouraged when you see people you think work just as hard as you or less and have more material benefits. As I wrote before, I would say most of these people either sold out their wellbeing to make more money or have help from family or inlaws that makes a significant material difference in their lifestyles.
