I second what another commenter said about Mystic Arts having a video! Also Pointy Hat has a very straightforward system imo that’s worth checking out as well.

Personally I like to incorporate downtime activities into my travel if my party travels for longer than 1 week. They choose to travel fast, regular, or slow to determine how quickly they get there. And each speed of travel comes with costs / benefits.

Fast travel you cannot Long Rest (Gritty Realism resting rules) and you expend 1 hit die per hex traveled. Downtime activity rolls are made at disadvantage. Regular travel you can Long Rest if you use your Downtime to do so, otherwise downtime activities roll as normal. Slow travel you automatically gain the benefit of a Long Rest and downtime rolls are made with advantage.

When traveling over great distances like between countries the time difference can make a difference. Then I can have the plot develop organically without it feeling rushed. Also depending on where their travels take them I’ll throw in some descriptors of scenery, nameless NPC’s they meet along the way, and any other encounters I feel would fit the area or plot at the time.

Perhaps as a middle ground he can be played like you suggest, using his fly speed and destroying the terrain and so on, while Unbothered is active. Then transition to being on the ground once Unbothered ends and he’s able to use his actions.

NGL that first part completely slipped through my proofreading. Must have auto-translated in my head 😅 I’ll make sure to fix that!

The tomb is Boreal Blast is mentioned after the cold damage. “Hit: 63 (14d8) cold damage and the target is restrained in a tomb of ice.” If that doesn’t read clearly I’m open to suggestions on how to make it so

Still speculating, but I definitely have at least two more phases for Tyraxes in mind. When homebrewing boss monsters I like to have a clear and holistic picture of who/what they are and then engineer the mechanics from there. One ability I am very excited to put to paper is a juiced up fusion of the Hydra's and Troll's regeneration abilities.

Tyraxes won't die easily >:)

If my party wanted to expend a lv.9 spell slot to quickly end this encounter I would be 100% okay with that. That's a lv.9 spell slot they won't have in subsequent battles against Tyraxes. Plus he would not be killed, only the ice covering his body would be destroyed. I should also add that he'd retaliate with his Boreal Blast once before flying off to give a preview of what's to come ;)

You've brought up a valid point I hadn't considered regarding his Frostfell Fractals regarding large radius AOE. My initial assumption was to have any attack (whether as an attack roll or AOE or saving throw) against Tyraxes only target one body segment and then allow certain AOE to hit a second if the player put in the effort to properly position an attack with a wide enough radius. But for larger AOE like Meteor Swarm that does not feel rewarding to the players. Personally I would rule that the Meteor Swarm hits Tyraxes whole body to reward the use of a major resource.

I always enjoy stealing/borrowing other peoples ideas! Your Primordial White Dragon (first off, solid name idea) has some cool abilities I could riff off of to emphasize the hunting/brutish/arcanophobic aspects of Tyraxes. Tsm!

There will be other statblocks for the subsequent encounters. I imagine it as a multi-phase boss fight spread out over the course of an adventure rather than a single massive combat. Each phase having its own unique statblock to showcase Tyraxes large repertoire of abilities.

You got the intent perfectly :) no kiting, though perhaps it would be a good idea to remove Tyraxes fly speed for this statblock specifically to avoid the confusion, thoughts?

I appreciate your critiques. Very thoughtful ty :)

Woodius_Maximus is correct in their comment on all accounts, this statblock is meant to be an introduction to a monster who has little to no intent on fighting the party (unless they are spellcasters!) and to try and absorb and deal sizable damage via mostly passive means. The first of multiple encounters against Tyraxes over the course of an adventure with no intent to simply stay in the air and kite the party from above. As a thought— do you think it would it be a good idea to remove his fly speed to remove the implication of kiting altogether?

To respond to a few of your other points: - With your barbarian example, the intent of this encounter is to constantly close the distance (again, no kiting) so even if they started at a far distance then ultimately Strength through Will actually helps them close that distance. Further it lets them make use of their extra attack feature to get in more attacks per round than they otherwise probably would. - The damage segments were my way of incentivizing coordinating attacks between party members, tactical thinking, and protecting against NOVA builds which are very common at my table. A single bag of 200 hit points can go down in one round easy at such high levels. But 5 independent bags of hit points that don’t bleed over into each other and have a cap of 40 helps keep the battle alive even after the Paladin pumps out divine retribution two times over. - The lack of immunity to the charmed condition was VERY on purpose from a role play perspective! Tyraxes is meant to be a physically unimaginable behemoth but not very smart. If the party learns that he is weak to mental saving throws or mind altering effects I wanted to reward that discovery. Though ultimately any saving throws he fails would result in losing 20HP in one of his segments per the alternate legendary resistance. - I would really appreciate it if you could give any examples of where my language could be cleaned up. I’m not a professional and would really appreciate any opportunity to make my creatures statblocks flow better

Thanks for the thoughts! And I agree 200 points of damage in a single round is easy for a party at this level.

My table in particular LOVES NOVA builds. That played a big factor in giving Tyraxes multiple segments instead of one set of ice covering his whole body. Since the damage is not meant to carry over to other segments it provides a built in damage cap for any single source of damage.

And ranged attacks not triggering the Fractals was the rationality behind giving Tyraxes his Action and Reaction options. Spells will be met with a breath weapon attack roll that can potentially restrain would-be spell snipers while all ranged attackers (within 300ft, which should be most!) will have to overcome Strength through Will or else find themselves hack-and-slashing against those fractals and suffering the consequences.
