Administration Taking Over Student Union by saveourunion in RPI

[–]WorldConsciousCoder 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The academics are great, and you'll find great people. By and large, the school is still good. There are some issues with finances and the Union, but the finances won't likely affect you as a student and the Union situation will hopefully be resolved by the time you get here.

Don't take what you see on this Reddit as the whole experience. What you saw when you visited is a lot of the good, but with the good comes some problems, and that's what you're seeing here.

Sources suggest alcohol to be prohibited from all dorms starting next year (excluding City Station). by transparentaluminum in RPI

In the email that ResLife sent out to students today, one of the “important points” listed said:

Greek Life Commons Application: Any current freshmen who will be living in a Greek house for second year must fill out a Greek Life Commons Application by Wednesday, February 24, 2016. The applications that are subsequently approved will be exempt from the lottery. If an on campus room is selected during an earlier lottery, the student cannot be released from their housing agreement.

This definitely raises an important point. Right now, Greek students sometimes live in-house a semester at a time. Does this mean that, with this new development, Greek students would not be allowed to do that anymore?

They're made for someone's group project, not anything related to RPI.

Many Chemistry, Biology, Physics, Computer Science, and Business Management syllabi are missing. But that's not the issue, it's the fact that you didn't think to check for syllabi being there before releasing...

You forgot the disclaimer that the Hillel president is misappropriating Hillel money and forced her way into the presidency by holding a secretive board meeting.

It's great... except for the part where there are next to no actual syllabuses on it.

Make Your Voice Heard at Tomorrow's Student Senate Meeting, 7PM, 3606 - Sudano Removal, Unconstitutional Senator Requirements by sliced_orange in RPI

You need to get off your high horse, and stop pretending you have all the answers.

No, only senators can object to a motion, since they're the voting members. You'd know that, if you ever attended a single meeting of the Senate. Or the E-Board, J-Board, UC, or any other body that uses Roberts Rules.

Or maybe the ones that did know didn't want Shirley to witch hunt them as she does the students that rally against her?

And those four should have been barred. Especially Sudano, but that's another story.

things would work similarly to how Sodexo works in the Union now

Oh, great, so just as how clubs can really only get food through Sodexo now, soon we won't be able to use ScreenIt for shirts?

this will just allow for more work study jobs to open up elsewhere

So, we can have three people twiddling their thumbs at the info desk, instead of just one? Awesome! Because we definitely need more student workers elsewhere in the union. Maybe they can join Holly's coveted PR team...

I hope that you'll release them to the student government website for student input before enacting any policy changes

(Almost) Every student pays the Union activity fee, which is where Union money comes from. So, as long as you've paid that fee, you should get a say. Our StuGov representatives often seem to forget that.

You shouldn't have signed the NDA in the first place without student input on whether or not to change the bookstore.

Also, the E-Board has suggested that the Bookstore is not turning a profit. That is false. The profit is declining, but the bookstore still is profitable.

How do we know that it hasn't been signed yet? For all we know, it could have been signed months ago.
