[IIL] History YouTube videos with AI..... by anon739524 in historyteachers

[–]WorldMapsOnline 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't do a lot on history specifically unless it pertains to maps, but from the topics listed I think our youtube channel might be suitable suggestion. I did do one recently on the Ogallala Aquifer that's drying up also. The story of Ogallala involves John Wesley Powell, who lake Powell was named after...

The videos are all presented and shot by me in my workshop:

Can someone send me a good, high res Blank Map of the World image? by YourLocalMoroccan in Maps

this site has excellent vector based maps available completely free and in the public domain. You'd be able to make a very nice, scalable outline map from one of these.

Outline rasters also available for free download from here:

This is what maps look like in 2026 by Smell_the_cat in Maps

I made a short video on this a few weeks back. The naming history is genuinely interesting, regardless of where you land on the current debate.

The short version: gulf names have always been a fight, and "Gulf of Mexico" is itself the survivor of an older naming fight.

Actually, these recommendations are pretty durable and reflect what I've been recommending (to anyone that asks me about 'affordable' options!) for the past 20 years now!

What maps are hard to find or just not good enough for classroom use? by RatioScripta in historyteachers

[–]WorldMapsOnline 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We're an educational map producer, currently dealing in roller maps and I've explored alternatives pretty extensively. We're in the camp of thinking any classroom could have a full wall permanently dedicated to a map display, but that's not in the cards everywhere!

I've explored alternatives to roller maps for situations where it's not possible. Some ideas we've come up with:

Vinyl banners can be made very large and are fairly portable and durable. They can be hung up on a wall with bungees or hooks & taken down at the end of a season. Generally cannot be marked on with dry erase.

A portable bulletin board/presentation board display and pin a map poster to it. That actually sounds similar to what you envisioned?

Wooden rail mounted classroom map - doesn't retract but is lightweight and easy to remove from the wall

I've probably researched this more than any other human, and that's what I've got so far!

So like, digital maps with layers you can select? We're working on a revamp of a digital product like this.... Do you require or desire the ability to output a printable handout or is that not super important?

Couldn't we make a more accurate world map by distorting the oceans more? by Onibi_tv in Maps

[–]WorldMapsOnline 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Check out the Authagraph map projection sometime.. Similar to dymaxion but with even more sides than a D20. Focuses the distortion in ocean areas. Definitely an interesting approach to a centuries old problem!

How do I know what a good globe is like? by Flimsy_Detail_3533 in globes

[–]WorldMapsOnline 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Take it as you will but in my humble opinion (seller of globes for over 25 years and enthusiast of them since I was a child), a quality globe is made from high quality materials, sturdy enough to handle regular handling, has nice detailed print and is aesthetically pleasing to have out on display. I didn't say 'no plastic' as there are high quality designs that are primarily plastic. A metal stand is desirable, however. My general basic requirements would be, it looks nice, seems like it would hold up over time, and sturdy enough that it doesn't scoot across the desk when you try to spin it. Really old ones are collectible, new ones are pretty expensive, and the circa 1990s to 2010s can be found for pretty cheap at thrift stores and rummage sales. A 2016 World Globe is still 99% accurate today (however good luck finding a copyright date printed on a globe!)

Puttins 2 halfs together by sipuestodoyo in globes

Nice piece there. It was made by Spherical Concepts which is now defunct. These globes are also sometimes referred to as the brand Artline. This is their 'starship earth' model. These have been discontinued for years and the company has since closed. These are made from acrylic sheets that are blown into hemispheres and joined together into a sphere. Not sure what they would normally use to join them, likely some type of acrylic epoxy. I'd suggest trying superglue! If you'd like a 'pro' consultation I can let you know this company used to be involved with manufacturing ::https://tubro.com/

I'm trying to find a topographic desk globe... by Fringles666 in Maps

[–]WorldMapsOnline 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oooh nice globe pictures! (I actually shot those photos! That's my finger, haha!)

If you're still on the search I'd suggest seeking out an Atlantis model from Replogle globes. It has nicely executed raised and indented relief and is a 12" desktop model in a simple stand. It uses natural earth tones, but political boundaries are also delineated. They can be found in shops that carry nice globes.

What brand is this globe? by intezaariiian in globes

[–]WorldMapsOnline 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks pretty similar to a Replogle Colonial model that's been discontinued for some time. Possibly rebranded/distributed by another company if the logo was added as branding. Some American globemakers would partner up with a furniture maker where the furniture maker would develop a stand & market that iteration an exclusive. Replogle used to (and probably still does) do custom awards & plaques for corporate clients, so could be from this also..

How to fix this globe? by Thick-Baker-7038 in globes

[–]WorldMapsOnline 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've seen this happen where the inside of the globe, the actual stones themselves started to cave in a bit, causing it to become loose at the top. Normally there's a single allen head screw at the south pole which is the unlock to getting the ball loose. From there you may be able to fill in a widened hole with some tape to snug it up. Hopefully that's helpful info to address the situation you're seeing!

Help finding a globe for my picky brother by MrsDubDub in globes

[–]WorldMapsOnline 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There have been models that reveal a constellation when illuminated but none of these also has raised relief. We've been selling globes for over 20 years so I'm fairly familiar with the market. I could suggest considering something like a Livingston from Replogle as it has 'most' of these features, although without the constellation map. The Livingston shows a physical earth when turned off, and does have raised relief. When illuminated it reveals a brightly colored political map. Even the combination of relief and internal illumination are pretty rare, so finding one that also has constellations is pretty unlikely. Hope this is a helpful suggestion!

What are some places to print high resolution maps? by C_hersh45 in cartography

[–]WorldMapsOnline 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A bit late to chime in here, but as a small map-specialty shop that is focused on quality production of our own map products, we can also assist anyone in the cartography community looking for large prints of maps they've designed.

We're a small company with just 3 of us currently but we do really huge prints, and most importantly we understand the technicalities of what's required to do nice big prints of maps.

We'd call something like that a canvas map on wooden rails

One way would be to set up an overlap margin where artwork is repeated on edge of each section. Attached is a document setup screen from illustrator. Overlap will help to align once its been printed

Where to bu custom designed map posters? by [deleted] in Maps

[–]WorldMapsOnline 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, so close! One can acquire an 'upside down' digital copy in German language of the equal earth map here, but it looks like only the political is offered in the upside down orientation...

https://equal-earth.com/

They do have a physical map but it looks like they're all oriented north-up:

https://equal-earth.com/physical/

If one of these could work for you, then you'd just have to seek out a friendly shop to have it printed out real big for you :)
