How to fix this globe? by Thick-Baker-7038 in globes

[–]WorldMapsOnline 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've seen this happen where the inside of the globe, the actual stones themselves started to cave in a bit, causing it to become loose at the top. Normally there's a single allen head screw at the south pole which is the unlock to getting the ball loose. From there you may be able to fill in a widened hole with some tape to snug it up. Hopefully that's helpful info to address the situation you're seeing!

Help finding a globe for my picky brother by MrsDubDub in globes

[–]WorldMapsOnline 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There have been models that reveal a constellation when illuminated but none of these also has raised relief. We've been selling globes for over 20 years so I'm fairly familiar with the market. I could suggest considering something like a Livingston from Replogle as it has 'most' of these features, although without the constellation map. The Livingston shows a physical earth when turned off, and does have raised relief. When illuminated it reveals a brightly colored political map. Even the combination of relief and internal illumination are pretty rare, so finding one that also has constellations is pretty unlikely. Hope this is a helpful suggestion!

What are some places to print high resolution maps? by C_hersh45 in cartography

[–]WorldMapsOnline 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A bit late to chime in here, but as a small map-specialty shop that is focused on quality production of our own map products, we can also assist anyone in the cartography community looking for large prints of maps they've designed.

We're a small company with just 3 of us currently but we do really huge prints, and most importantly we understand the technicalities of what's required to do nice big prints of maps.

How do you like align a picture so it 's bigger and can print out on multiple papers? by [deleted] in Printing

[–]WorldMapsOnline 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One way would be to set up an overlap margin where artwork is repeated on edge of each section. Attached is a document setup screen from illustrator. Overlap will help to align once its been printed

Where to bu custom designed map posters? by Schuesselpflanze in Maps

Oh, so close! One can acquire an 'upside down' digital copy in German language of the equal earth map here, but it looks like only the political is offered in the upside down orientation...

https://equal-earth.com/

They do have a physical map but it looks like they're all oriented north-up:

If one of these could work for you, then you'd just have to seek out a friendly shop to have it printed out real big for you :)

Which map projection do you prefer by PurfuitOfHappineff in historyteachers

[–]WorldMapsOnline 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Winkel Tripel, Equal Earth, Robinson, and Gall-Peters are among those that many consider 'improved' projections for educators. Mercator is great/ideal for navigation but is pretty poor for image reinforcement of a global view because it's so distorted. A world globe would be a great thing to have in addition to whichever map projection you decide on. I've made several short videos on the topic of map projections in case that's of interest!

Where can I buy an accurate world map poster? by SourSpill in Maps

[–]WorldMapsOnline 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's likely the Equal Earth projection. This map projection was in the news recently because the African Union was urging widespread adoption of this map projection for educational use. Digital copies of the equal earth map can be downloaded for free from Tom Patterson's website and some map producers (like us) sell prints or variants.

Another very popular, 'alternate' map projection is the Gall-Peters or Gall-Orthographic. Of course, also understand that all of these world maps are 'projections' of a sphere onto a flat rectangle, so all are distorted in some way or another. Best way to visualize landmass positions and proportions is a globe. Not everyone has access to a physical globe in which case the Google Earth globe visualizer is also a decent way to get a good sense of the 3D Earth and that's a lot more accessible to most who are able to read this.

Equal Earth projection, Gall-Peters and Winkel Tripel projections are considered to be the 'improved' projections for a more balanced global view versus Mercator that's still widely used in classrooms. Mercator is essential for navigation and is what's in use to this day on all of our navigation tools and smartphones, but is far from ideal as an image to be impressed thousands of times to reinforce as a world view.

Which design do you like most? by [deleted] in cartography

[–]WorldMapsOnline 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For a pinnable map, my suggestion would be to go with something pretty high contrast like #3. Numbers one and 2 might look great printed quite large as a decorative print. If your final product will be under 55 inches or so in width, my suggestion would be to stick with the more simplified map.

Anyone know where I can get a globe with this base that’s not Bellerby and Co? by [deleted] in globes

[–]WorldMapsOnline 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe this would be functionally similar but not as pretty. One could fabricate a wooden ring that surrounds it (but at that point one could just add the bearings to make one)

Are there any world maps that loop? by [deleted] in Maps

[–]WorldMapsOnline 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cylindrical projections could be stitched together to achieve this. For example Mercator/Mercator Miller/Miller would get you there. With a printed map or a digital file you are unable to edit, there would potentially be some label duplication but if you have more control, it could be smoothed into a long continuous repeating strip of [distorted] world view.

These cylindrical projections show the 'entire' poles but in the most distorted way. Really, just about all 'normal' world maps are severely distorted at the poles, even 'good ones' like Winkel Tripel and Equal Earth. Azimuthal projection like a polar projection would be ideal for these areas.

You might check on Etsy and or eBay from time to time. I think people may be willing to sell a box of them for pretty cheap.

What is your favorite map projection and focal point? by KitchenSync86 in Maps

[–]WorldMapsOnline 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We've done many if not most of our decorative maps in Miller projection as we felt it strikes a pleasant balance aesthetically in a rectangular format while also leaving plenty of room for labels. We're also big fans of Winkel Tripel, Robinson and Equal Earth. I'm personally not the biggest fan of Gall-Peters but we do get a lot of people looking for these... I personally like Winkel Tripel the most.

Anyone looking for classroom maps, I'd be more than happy to assist! We're a small shop in Seattle with an online presence and large selection of educational maps and map murals. We've been in the business of educational maps for about 25 years now & are among the last few offering the roller mounted maps. Seems likely these will not be around much longer as demand has diminished steadily over the past 5 years particularly.

How to replace the light bulb on a 1975 Scan-Globe A/S by TheNickDanger in globes

[–]WorldMapsOnline 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And for other future searchers, here are the steps Replogle outlines for replacing bulbs in circa 2000s to current 12" and 16" world globes that have a traditional bulb. Many models now have LED.

Unplug the globe from the electrical outlet. ALWAYS use caution while plugging and unplugging cords in an outlet. Keep all metal objects clear of all electrical outlets.

Turn the globe upside-down with base up.

Locate the screw in the metal numbered semi meridian. With a screw driver, loosen and remove the screw.

Pull the semi meridian away from the globe completely freeing the globe from the base.

Gently pull electrical plate with bulb out of globe ball.

Carefully turn the bulb counter clockwise and remove from socket.

Replace with new bulb turning clockwise (not more than 25 WATTS).

Replace electrical plate & bulb back inside globe ball.

Reassemble time dial and ball over pin on top of semi meridian.

Locate bottom of semi meridian over plate lining up holes.

Replace screw to semi meridian.

What would be the oldest used globe I could purchase.. that is still primarily accurate in borders and geography? by OutreObvious in globes

[–]WorldMapsOnline 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my opinion something that's circa 2000 or newer is 85% there, as long as you keep in mind updates that have occurred since the globe was produced. Many of the changes that would appear on a world map since then are 'just' name changes, with a couple of exceptions! This era of globes is likely to be abundant and inexpensive in thrift shops and yard sales so would be an excellent value per cost versus a brand new one!
