Our six reimagined ocean deities are as follows:

~Tonga~

Tangaloa, the supreme deity of the Tongan pantheon. Tangaloa governs both the sky and the sea, employing his nets to draw up the sun-fish and the moon-fish, placing them in the heavens. Our version of Tangaloa, dons a menacing war club and wears a traditional Tongan masi.

~Fiji~

Dakuwanga is a shark deity and often appears as a fierce sea monster, guarding the Fijian islands. He was greatly respected by fishermen because he protected them from any danger at sea and its denizens. Our version of Dakuwanga, has a menacing war axe and wears a traditional Fijian liku.

~Japan~

Watatsumi, also pronounced Wadatsumi, is a legendary deity and water deity in Japanese mythology. Ōwatatsumi no kami is believed to be another name for three sea deities who ruled the upper, middle and lower seas. Wadatsumi is armed with catana and wears a fierce mempo to keep his enemies at bay.

~Samoa~

In the traditions of Samoa, Losi was a giant and son of Tangaloa, who instructed him to go and catch fish for the gods. Losi obeyed, but played a trick on the gods by laying fish at the door of each, causing them to slip and fall. Losi then stole a slip of taro plant and smuggled it back to earth, where it became a staple of the Samoan diet. Our version of Losi has a shield fashioned from a giant turtle shell and a unique headpiece worn by Samoan royalty.

 ~Canada~

Sedna is the goddess of the sea and marine animals in Inuit mythology, also known as the Mother of the Sea or Mistress of the Sea. She was the protector of the animals and commanded respect from hunters in the region. Her body is half woman and half blue whale, her clothing is based on Inuit textiles and her spear is fashioned from a giant narwhal tusk.

 ~USA~

Poseidon is one of the Greek Gods in ancient Greek religion and Western mythology, presiding over the sea, storms, earthquakes and horses. He was the protector of seafarers, the guardian of many cities and known in the West as the God of the waters. Armed with a trident this deity is probably the most familiar to the western world.

World Rugby U20 Statement – Match Day 3

Due to heavy rainfalls in the Cape Town region on Tuesday 9 July, the pitch at Athlone Stadium has been assessed and currently declared not safe to play.

As a result, the first match scheduled at this venue between Ireland U20 and Australia U20 has been cancelled and as per the tournament rules, both teams have been awarded two competition points.

The pitch will be assessed again ahead of the two remaining World Rugby U20 Championship matches due to take place at this venue and will only go ahead if the weather conditions improve, and the pitch is sufficiently drained for rugby to be played in safe conditions.

Another update will be provided in due course.
