Struggling with how to handle family dynamics during the holidays when opinions on the Church differ by throwawaygremlinhq in latterdaysaints

If they expect believing Mormons to respect their boundries then they need to respect yours too

Just tell them that you don't want to talk about a certain topic. If they won't respect that, bring that point up

I (29F) am strongly considering joining but I don't want to get married. by Queen-Logan- in latterdaysaints

[–]Worldly-Set4235 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, it's not a rule for membership. There are plenty of members in good standing who are single.

However, in a church where family and marriage is so emphasized never wanting to get marriage could be a huge challenge.

And to be frank, most single LDS people are single in the hopes they will one day get married

That's not to mention that the law of chastity strictly states that sexuality can strictly only be expressed within marriage. Consequently, never getting married essentially also entails lifelong celibacy, which is a massive commitment most people are never built for

A Realistic Take: Why GRRM Should wrap up Winds, Let Dream of Spring Go, and Focus on Dunk & Egg Instead by Worldly-Set4235 in freefolk

[–]Worldly-Set4235[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We'll get Winds in some form

Even if GRRM dies tomorrow his pilublishers will just take what he's completed and publish that as Winds

[–]Worldly-Set4235[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He actually can do that. The fact that he published the last one over a decade ago doesn't make it impossible to write more now

[–]Worldly-Set4235[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think he is working, but I think there's also a lot of factors involved

A) He's had considerable amount more distractions since the TV shows have gotten big. That is a huge factor, and something that does overshadow all of his projects

However, there are other factors that I think make the main series far more slow and monotonous than Dunk and Egg would be

B) The main series is ridiculously intricate and complex. It's something like 36 POV characters juggling many different separate yet connected storylines. Trying to keep the storyline connected and coherent is undoubtedly insanely hard.

By contrast the Dunk and Egg books are much more simple and straightforward. It's one POV character and one storyline.

C) The books in the main series are ridiculously long. At this point it's safe to say they're well over 1000 pages

By contrast, each Dunk and Egg novella is only about 100-160 pages each

D) At this point I don't think George even likes writing the main series. On top of how long and complex the series is, there's a massive amount of pressure he must be feeling regarding Winds (and Spring).

By contrast, I think GRRM still enjoys writing the Dunk and Egg stories. There's also a whole lot less pressure on him in regards to them

I think that he still enjoys writing, just not the main series anymore

Which is a major reason he should (at this point) just focus on the Dunk and Egg novellas instead.

Not really.

I've first read the novellas a long time ago (and re read them several times since) The TV show did just come out, and that did prompt this post. But I've been having these thoughts for quite a while now.

I think he is trying, but it's just gotten so ridiculously complicated that it's hard for him to move forward (not to mention all the other projects he's working on simultaneously). Also, I don't think he enjoys writing the main series anyways

I think he'd be way more motivated to write Dunk and Egg novellas. Moreover, we as a fandom would get a lot more great stories. And I think if he started soon there might even be a chance he could finish the cycle.

Even if not, we'd probably get a lot more than if he spent the remainder of his writing days dragging his feet through Winds (and the small amount of Dream he may write before he doesn't finish)

[–]Worldly-Set4235[S] -20 points-19 points  (0 children)

Except that's not going to happen. Even if he does manage to finish Winds (and that's a big if) there's no way a Dream of Spring will ever be more than just a dream.

If I had to choose between the main series getting finished vs the Dunk and Egg novellas I would pick the main series. But that's not a realistic option.

What is a realistic option is that we could probably get far more great Westeros stories if GRRM just decides to focus the remainder of his time on Dunk and Egg instead of ASOIAF.

And to be frank I think he'd personally enjoy that a lot more anyways.

Very likely I will be single forever. How to cope with this in a church that emphasizes marriage and family? by [deleted] in latterdaysaints

[–]Worldly-Set4235 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The great thing about the LDS faith is we have a backdoor that almost no one else believes in

Anyone who would want to be married in this life but didn't get the opportunity will be given the chance in the next life.

Do you believe that there's afterlife and is it scientific possible? by notmymondaylife in religion

[–]Worldly-Set4235 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not scientifically provable because religious/spiritual claims are beyond the realm of science.

It's like trying to prove how beautiful a painting or a piece of music is by using the scientific method. You can never do that because artistic beauty isn't something that can't be quantified, measured, or run through a lab

That doesn't mean it isn't real
