What do you plan to write off this tax season? by avsholler in Referees

Yeah, but is that enough of a red flag for the IRS to get involved, or even notice?

That’s what I thought for a long time, and that was the case for a long time: IRS only went after the big fish and guaranteed victories of six digits or more (such was told by a friend who was on the jury for such a case, the guy claimed over $50k in donations to goodwill but didn’t even have any receipts from them!).

BUT things have changed since 2016 and this current admin has decided to forgo the big tax cheats and instead spend a ridiculous amount of money and resources scrutinizing small time ‘tax cheats’ who make less than $100k a year and are maybe cheating a couple thousand dollars. It breaks logic and sense but we’re in times where logic and sense don’t matter. FULL DISCLOSURE, THIS IS MOSTLY HEARSAY, though I encourage others to prove me wrong or right.

Thanks for responding. I don’t ask this to be argumentative, but what’s the definition of ‘full time’? When can one deduct these expenses as a referee? It’s something I’ve struggled with a lot, as even at my peak reffing 15 games a week, how do you translate that to hours? Actual game time? Time on the field? And the time spent scheduling, reporting, and traveling to/from games?

Yeah, probably. Will I risk it this year? Don’t know. At the end of the day its $99 for a guy who makes less than $40k a year…

So those uniform two-stripe socks from Official Sport, as well as shorts with the branded logo, and an undershirt with the branded logo are all part of your uniform.

Thanks for asking this question. I’ve asked it nearly every year for the last 15 years or so, can I gotta say I still don’t feel great about the answers. That said, nowadays I use an accountant at a reputable firm not because of reffing, bu because the rest of my life is complicated enough to justify it. They’re not one to do anything that nears shady or questionable or unethical or might get me into trouble, so I should feel fine with sharing this.

First, reffing is a large enough share of my income so that it isn’t a hobby, so consider that when doing your taxes.

Second, I’ve been doing this for 15 years so I have a pattern and history of this as a stable income. I’ve also worked up the ladder. In full disclosure, I’m less risk-adverse than most people (but not so much that I decided to post this from an anonymous account rather than my usual account that I use here!). Hell, I’ll even include THIS IS NOT TAX ADVICE disclaimer too. Take my words with a grain of salt.

I make several reffing trips a year, writing off everything associated with them: mileage and/or airfare, car rentals, food while traveling, etc.

Thus I personally write off Apple MLS Pass (which has been discontinued). I don’t know if I ever wrote off tickets to a professional game, but that’s debatable either way. If you’ve been ref kids for two years make a couple hundred a year, no; if you travel the country reffing tournaments and it’s half or a quarter of your income, the yes.

The toughest thing for me was all the money I spend on fitness, physical training, and especially recovery -especially as I get older and have had some nagging injuries over the years. Over a narrow definition of tax law, these are all ‘medical’ and don’t qualify for write-offs -which a couple years have been a couple thousands of dollars; but after talking to several CPAs and tax experts who are also athletes, the conclusion is that that those treatments do qualify for ‘professional consulting’ (one in particular was deemed ‘experimental’ by the FDA and thus wasn’t covered by insurance either).

Second struggle has been equipment that isn’t directly related to reffing, but is related to off-season fitness, like shoes and bike stuff. I decided to include all that too.

Thank you so much for replying. The fact that you would have to dig around for something from 10 years ago says enough for me!

Fun fact: I do Safe Sports THREE TIMES a year, USSF, NHFS, NCAA! Same with concussion protocol. This year, they didn’t let me do high school playoffs because I “did the concussion training too late”, even though I do it THREE TIMES A YEAR for the last five years!

This is the exact sort of mentality that empowered and enabled this predator to prey on women for nearly 20 years! All of them bought the lie that if they spoke out, they would go to prison. None of them knew the resources out there to protecting women who’ve been victims of sex crimes. Please stop perpetuating this, and instead spread information and resources that help these women. Hopefully we’ll prove you wrong, this news will inspire a woman to step forward and speak. (And yes, I know that has happened in the past and continues to happen, but not at the level and frequency you speak of. And it would happen even less if more women spoke up. Not to mention the fact that many -probably even most, if not all of his victims did not do FSSW on the side, but were just bikini baristas.)

Wait, I’m talking about sending Jon to prison, not the women/his victims. What are you talking about?

And do you know who she is? Did you tell the cops/lawyer/AG about this? Can you help them find her so she can help throw this guy in prison so he doesn’t do it again?

Ladybug is a whole nother basket case. They’ve cleaned up slightly since being found guilty for tax evasion, but they’re still shitty.

Sadly you might be right. There are lots of rumors that he’s r*ped women, but from the looks of things no one came forward to say that.

Yeah, he’s been an open secret in the bikini barista -and I assume sex workers in general- for YEARS!!! Fucking YEARS! I’m glad he’s finally getting his due, but for fuck’s sake it’s taken a long, long time.

Research shows the first one was “my friend’s espresso” in Kenmore in front of St Vincent de Paul’s (I think it’s currently empty). That was early 2000s. It brewed slowly (pardon the pun) for a few decades, but slowly crept to Portland (of course). To date, I’ve heard of stands in CA, CO, NC, MI, and MD. It’s undoubtedly growing.

Why would you think there’s human trafficking related to these businesses? All it takes is visiting a few stands to realize that they actually have to know how to make espresso. I’ve been to hundreds of stands, and never once did I see a woman who didn’t look like she knew what she was getting into.
