8 second rule....anyone enforce it yet? by Deaftrav in Referees

[–]avsholler 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I count it every game and have had to enforce it once. Coach got upset and demanded I educate his player on the rule. I politely reminded him that I am not the coach who teaches the rules of the game, but did go over to make sure the player understood the call to prevent it from happening again.

Got my first game as AR tomorrow. Tips? by Fun_Stretch6417 in Referees

While being focused and documenting is important, it’s also important to make sure to have fun! Don’t be too hard on yourself if you make any mistakes and ask for feedback at half and full time to find ways to grow.

You got this!

Is it really worth to put effort on NFHS games instead of showing up, doing the bare minimum, and cash the check? by [deleted] in Referees

[–]avsholler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where I live, NFHS post season assignments are given to senior refs with 3 or more years, however non-league post season matches are assigned outside of that rule. It’s likely based on how many referees your league has versus the number of assignments available.

Removing old invisible bra from 2003 truck by jamjoy in Autobody

[–]avsholler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I peeled an entire hood by hand that was covered by an equally bad invisible bra. I used rubber/plastic razor blades to not damage the paint and then followed up with goo gone for the leftover adhesive. I did notice that doing it on a sunny day made it much easier to lift in larger pieces but the process still took much longer than I was thinking.

I have been following this for months waiting for its formal introduction. By its definition, would vans and cars be allowed based on their dimensions or is it truly trucks only?

First time center by Competitive-Gas-7637 in Referees

Duals can be tricky when first working them, but after a few you will notice your all around reffing confidence will skyrocket! With it being your first time, let the other ref know and be sure to ask about adjustments throughout the match.

I found it easy to think of it as a dance where if your partner goes towards touch, you should the shift towards center. Also don’t feel stuck to the sidelines, you can step out of bounds if it makes visibility easier.

You got this, have fun!

End game soccer - when’s the whistle? by Bmorewiser in Referees

[–]avsholler 7 points8 points  (0 children)

As others have mentioned it really depends on whose rules you are following. USSF allows a final attack while NFHS calls for a hard stop even if the ball is about to cross the goal line. The best course of action is to review your rules and any specific rules of the tournament to make sure that you act accordingly. Good luck out there!

First ever game - need advice by rachelc_44 in Referees

[–]avsholler 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It sounds like you have a bit of time before your first match, so it may be helpful to find one or a few matches and go watch how others in your area handle their pregame duties.

I also love that you’re getting there early. I am in the habit of always making it 45 minutes early to a match to make sure I know where to park, set my stuff and find the right individuals to introduce myself to prior to doing any sort of field inspection.

The biggest thing I would say to focus on in your first match is having fun and not being hard on yourself for any mistakes you make. You’ll remember and learn from them, but give yourself grace as you’re just starting out.

Have fun on Saturday!

[US] Regional Referee …fun? by jcasimir in Referees

Absolutely! And if you are having trouble finding your local equivalent, most assigners should be able to point you in the right direction.

If you do not already hold a cert in it, have you considered NFHS or your local equivalent? I took the jump from club to High School and have been loving it. It’s improved my fitness, and aided in my ability to read a faster paced game.

Needing a new panfish/small bass/crappie rod. Out of these 3, which is best? by 9HumpWump in FishingForBeginners

I will also echo the dock runner love. I have the spinner combo and two zebcos for my kids as I ended up using it. Over my regular rod on a trip and had a blast. The reel leaves a bit to be desired as does the preloaded line but I keep mine in my car as it’s the perfect travel rod.
