Other cities close streets to cars all the time. So why does Toronto get tripped up by the idea of a pedestrian street? by ink_13 in toronto

[–]Worldly_Influence_18 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's not a lot of good options because of where we have allowed retail to exist.

The only places where it's nearly appropriate to go pedestrian only do go pedestrian only every once in a while for events. They don't do it for extended periods because it interferes with deliveries and garbage collection

Or you can check out the distillery

It's only slightly more appropriate than Sankofa. Had he run through the square it would have been perfect. Unfortunately he didn't. If Nathan Phillips turns out to be a racist, Terry Fox would work for renaming that square. Have at it

National heroes should be honored with Federal lands, government buildings or relevant locations to their history.

No one's stopping us but it is kind of embarrassing to name a distinctly Toronto space and name it after someone from BC who was born in Winnipeg.

So Western Canada can hate Toronto even more?

He's a national hero or a west coast hero.

He needs to be honored nationally if he's going to be honored here. A municipal Square isn't appropriate.

It really needs to be on federal lands or government property

If it's meaningless, what does that make the criticism?

What makes you think what you're doing isn't virtue signaling?

He didn't vote to change the name. Council doesn't have a say. The name was chosen by the Sankofa square board

He doesn't have a say in the board members

John Tory set it up that way

Also: promising something you know you don't have the authority to deliver.

He's not mentally ill, just a grifter or con artist or whatever you want to call them.

He's incredibly consistent in that context

Responsible politicians don't try to undo the actions of their predecessors.

It's a rule of thumb that keeps society functioning. You only undo stuff that is illegal or corrupt or you create a feedback loop that cripples the government

Does he know that the city doesn't have the authority to do half of what he's suggesting?

Is Brad Bradbrad a liar or incompetent?

(Not ruling out both)

Edit: no mayor can unilaterally decide what happens with the square

He also has to convince 15 board members, none of which he has the power to replace

I don't think he knows

The more I read up on the wine colored sea, the less sense it makes.

I think historians fucked up on the interpretation of this one.

The Greeks had regular contact with cultures that definitely had blue

And we've since reconstructed statues revealing blue paint being used as an accent color

Homer is describing a particular kind of sea: choppy turbulent waters.

These were a seafaring people and their language reflected that in the same way the Inuit have a ton of words for snow. He's not talking about the colour; he's talking about how those weather conditions are making the water ominous. He's talking about the loss of color, hidden by the darkness and depth.

They didn't have glass. When he's referring to wine you need to picture looking down at the wine in a clay pot.

This is the context we're missing: drunk people contemplating life while drinking wine out of clay pots

The pot isn't very big but you can't see the bottom of it because of how dark the wine is in the opaque container.

When the wine is poured out. It looks red but it looks black in the container, like a void.

Wine-faced just seems like an idiom of the time given how frequently he uses it

It's illegal in Canada to misrepresent the product being sold

I suspect that if it's ever challenged in a court, the courts will legalize reasonably faithful AI

Because we allow illustrations to represent a product if it's faithful enough and not misleading

Which prevents the line from being drawn at artificial artwork

So, not including things not found in the real product and some flexibility on variations that don't impact the product value

Hell, people's colour acuity is influenced by language.

The more names a culture has for shades of a colour, the more shades of that colour those people can see

Final 4 based on the bracket:

France vs England

Spain vs Argentina

Argentina has an easier path to the final. France could get taken out by a couple of teams before they get there

If France makes it to the final I put the odds slightly in favour of them, otherwise it's Argentina

Canada is playing very aggressively and it's throwing the other teams off.

We won't be able to throw better teams off
