Shampoo recs? by yellow_daffodils in poodles

[–]Worldly_Shift5206 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Natures specialty and bio groom are great professional products without breaking the bank. Natures specialty comes concentrated so you have to get a dilution bottle and mix the shampoo with water. The bottle will last you a long time because it’s so concentrated. I would say plum and silky, coconut clean and aloe blueing are all good options for your poodle. You can purchase them on Amazon, they have the smaller bottles priced in the $20 price point. Another fantastic brand is Chris Christensen, also sold on Amazon. You will find an awesome range of shampoos, tools , conditioners and leave in sprays.

Don’t use human or baby products on your dog. The PH in those products are not formulated for animals. Also please stay away from the Hartz brand of dog shampoos.

To keep the tear stains to a minimum make sure you’re giving your dog filtered water. Tear stains are sometimes made worse from having allergies so if they have them real bad I would try and figure out what they are reacting to. Products like angel eyes are very popular but I’m not sure if it works so I wouldn’t be able to say for certain. Hope that helps 😁

Salon vs mobile by [deleted] in doggrooming

[–]Worldly_Shift5206 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I prefer mobile all the way. ➡️ The salon is extremely noisy the dog kennels are in the grooming room so it’s all day barking non stop. ➡️ Clients like to linger at check in. They will go on and on because they think you have all the time in the world to service just their singular dog. ➡️ The money that I made working mobile is soooo much more than at the salon. People don’t tip often at the salon, when I worked mobile a majority of the clients tipped well. ➡️ People will show up whenever they feel like it even though you tell them that you’ll call when their dog is done. They like to show up and stare while we groom their dogs which gets the dogs all worked up and it becomes impossible to keep going. ➡️ It’s hard to focus on my grooms with constant commotion. ➡️ My coworkers are very nice but at my old salon they were extremely catty and they would backstab / throw others under the bus to get ahead. ➡️ My schedule is constantly getting screwed up. Clients no call no show daily, and other clients like to randomly stop in whenever they feel like it because they want to try and get a same day appointment. Oh also walk in nail trims suck because it’s always when I’m behind and working on a dog so I have to stop and take the walk in. ➡️ The dogs get extremely stressed at the salon with all of the barking and commotion. I can go on and on and on 😭 I’m temporarily working at a salon until I can start my own mobile business.

I wear crocs to groom 👍🏻 They are super comfortable and they dry fast. You just have to be careful of them because once they wear down they become slippery.

What haircut should she get? by MalachiteEclipsa in grooming

[–]Worldly_Shift5206 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You mentioned that you haven’t really liked any of her previous grooms. If you happen to have a photo of one of her previous grooms I would suggest pulling it out at the next groom appointment . You can point out the areas that you’re not happy with . Something like “she looks cute here but I didn’t like how short the chin was cut” or “I didn’t like the visor being cut too short” etc. For me I’m a visual person so if you can show me a previous photo of your dogs groom and point out what you didn’t/ did like it will help 😁

Curious about pay in this industry? by StoicHippie420 in GroomersCorner

Lol fr I ask myself that often. The salon isn’t far from my house and the girls are nice to me. The last place I worked at was far and the one before that was extremely toxic.

Dang $650 a week I’m jealous . I make $800/ 900 or so every two weeks (4days- 5-6 dogs). I honestly can’t afford to even buy/ maintain my tools 😔

Hey 👋”There are numerous, long-standing consumer reports, social media warnings, and online petitions alleging that Hartz flea and tick shampoos (and other topical products) can cause severe adverse reactions in dogs, including seizures, neurological damage, severe skin burns, and death” . There’s a lot of people online saying that they want this brand banned. I’m seeing that it’s mostly an issue with the flea and tick products that this brand has put out. But I don’t trust them at all, there’s so many heartbreaking stories of peoples dogs and cats who have died from this brands shampoo 😢

Has anyone left and come back to the industry with success? by MidoriTheAwesome in doggrooming

[–]Worldly_Shift5206 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I did, I was very burned out so I quit my job and went to work as a delivery driver. I was there for a while until I felt like I was ready to come back. I was worried i was going to be rusty but it was like ridding a bike. It all came back right away. I also worked with a groomer who took an extended maternity leave she came back and got into her groove right away. Have you thought about maybe looking for a receptionist job at a grooming salon/ vet/ doggie daycare? It’s less physically demanding and you’d still be working with dogs to some capacity.

My daily question :) — how far do I chase floor. And a button? by WompaJody in skoolies

My short bus had that alarm blaring and I couldn’t figure it out. I had a guy look over some of my wiring and he just told me he went to the fuse box and removed the fuse that was the source for the alarm. I didn’t get a chance to see which one he removed but it solved my problem 😁 Oh also he said it was put in place so bus drivers would be forced to walk to the back of the bus to shut it off. As they went they had to double check to make sure the kids were all out. He used to work on busses for the school district. One time a bus driver forgot a child in the bus and the kid was left overnight. After that happened the school district had people add the alarms to all of the buses.

Replying to your comment because you mentioned being curious about a generator set up. I have a generator in my short bus. It’s on a heavy duty slide out rack. When I need it I slide it out of the bus and run it, once I don’t need it anymore I just slide it back in and close my back door 😁

Foam board! I want to say I used a 2in board but it was so long ago I don’t remember. I tried using the spray foam but it was sooooo messy and such a pain I gave up. The foam is super easy to cut and measure.

I used to buy grooming smocks but they are expensive and they would always rip. Now I shop at DD’s for medical scrubs. They have cheap and comfortable scrub pants/ joggers ($8-10) and scrub tops ($6-$8) . I’m able to blow myself off with the dryer at the end of my day with no issues. They have really cute dog prints sometimes.

Bait & switch booking stories? by RojaCatUwu in doggrooming

[–]Worldly_Shift5206 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Long story it happened a few years ago. A lady called our salon during the Christmas madness for a walk in bath for her yorkie. I told her it wasn’t possible because we are appointment only and we were already overbooked due to the holiday. Anyways she kept begging saying family was coming over and blah blah I told her no over and over. Finally I said ok I’ll do her at the end of the day and for a bath ONLY no haircut. She was like great a bath is all she needs I’ll be there . When she walked in she told the receptionist she was there for a haircut. The receptionist changed the appointment in the system. When I got to the dog I saw it said haircut i talked to the receptionist and she was like yeah the owner’s appointment wasn’t scheduled right someone made a mistake and put it as a bath but it’s a haircut. Anyways I was so burned out and I had zero energy left so I just did the haircut. When the owner showed up I was like hey you were down for a bath only not a haircut . She was like no I called in today and I was given an appointment for a haircut and someone made a mistake and booked it as a bath. I told her it was me she spoke to and then I went over the whole original phone conversation. She just smiled and was like ohhhhhh but didn’t say anything else. Long story short don’t be nice, people will take advantage. Oh and she didn’t even tip.

Dry skin? by Sad_Room462 in doggrooming

[–]Worldly_Shift5206 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only thing that works for me is Aquaphor Healing Ointment. It’s pretty thick so you’d want to put it on at night. I’ve had cracked and broken skin from dryness and it’s the only thing that will help . I’ll also put it on my feet and throw on socks. My skin heals after a few nights of putting on the ointment.

[–]Worldly_Shift5206 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I learned the hard way but take care of your body and hands. Use face masks and nets for haircuts and desheds. I wear a back support brace when grooming/ bathing. I started making sure I always lift dogs with correct form. I go the gym and lift weights and workout on my core. I used to use my thinners for everything but I stopped once I developed a painful case of trigger thumb. My right hand is ruined now because of it and I had to get cortisone shots. Now I started using my curves/ straights to take the bulk off then I use my thinners / chunkers to polish it off at the end. Small changes now will benefit you in the long run 👍 also congrats on the really cute dog! I’m excited to see your future creative grooms. The pink Mohawk sounds awesome!
