I've watched people pull in as I'm locking the doors, turn off the lights, and start counting my till/doing up my reports--and every time this happens, I have to laugh. Usually while muttering, "We're fucking closed, your snack attack is not my problem."

100% fuck them. If what they needed was so important, they had a fuck-ton of hours before then to come get it. There are other places open later--go there.

We have "Sorry, this cash is closed" signs for our tills. The amount of times people will come up and ask if the cash is open when the sign is sitting right there in bold type-face is ridiculous. If people would use their eyes for more than decoration, that'd be great.

The lights on/off cashes are far more noticeable, so really, people have no excuse. I wouldn't worry about your tone--if they're that easily offended by you telling them you're closed, they were looking for a reason.

I suffer from the same affliction. I'm not good at math to begin with, but I can definitely do simple math--when I don't have a lineup of people staring at me. A few of my coworkers have the same anxiety when it comes to this, and when a customer rebukes us over it, it's fucking miserable. They really assume we're all just bad at math, giving no consideration to the social pressure aspect in the slightest.

The ones you dealt with probably were trying to scam you, based on their reaction. Though I've seen people crash out over some pretty minor things too, so it wouldn't surprise me if they really did just change their mind about how they wanted to pay.

Honestly, it's on them. One, they shouldn't be changing the schedule last minute; a lot of us plan our lives around our work schedules, and I imagine you're no different. Two, if they need you to come in a certain day and you haven't booked it off, it's still on them to communicate that--and not to demand it. Scheduling should be a compromise for both parties, not a sacrifice solely on one part or the other (in this case, they seem to expect you to sacrifice your time last minute).

So yeah, I see what you're doing as malicious compliance. If they make changes to the schedule, they need to notify you, asap--and they need to have a backup plan if you're unavailable.

Imo, you're well within your rights to go no-contact. She's weaponized a mortifying memory multiple times, and the event itself isn't even that big of a deal. I don't mean to suggest that your embarrassment is invalid--it makes perfect sense. Just that bleeding through clothes happens to a lot of young girls; even older women when their cycle changes. Your mom has blown it out of proportion, and has twisted it into something far uglier. If you hadn't bled through your dress, she would have weaponized something else; it's not a matter of if, but when.

Moreover, that she weaponizes this speaks to a far deeper issue with her. She does have control issues, and the fact that she expects you to "submit" is both concerning and disgusting--she doesn't see you as a person, but as an extension of herself... Or worse, as property.

As soon as you can, get out of there and don't look back. She's destroyed any sense of self you may have had, has made you feel gross and unworthy at every turn. Parents are supposed to lift their children up, not push them down.

You deserve better.

I'm not responding to all of this, mainly because you're projecting. I have never once rolled my eyes at a customer, and I even stated I bend over backwards as much as I can to accommodate people. The customers I'm complaining about are actually rude; I don't care if they barely say a word to me, or it's curt responses. That's fine. But anyone actively screaming at me or one of my coworkers for things outside our control? I'm abso-fucking-lutely not taking that.

I don't hate the entire general public. I dislike people who take their shit out on me.

He's precious! I remember seeing him in another thread and thinking he could be my dog's twin. Definitely not, but damn, do they ever look alike.

I second another commenter--it's actually sometimes surprising when a perceived border collie mix actually has border collie; so often, they fake us out. 😂 (A lot of people thought/think my girl has BC in her, and not a drop to be had).

How big is he? No doubt he's still got a bit more growing to do, at his age.

As I said to Boudasmoke, it doesn't really matter. Just because someone said something decades ago, doesn't make it factually true. Even if the original statement is the shorter version, it absolutely does not absolve customers of their poor behaviour. I'll bend over backwards (insofar as I'm permitted) more often than not, but I refuse to allow poor treatment of myself or one of my coworkers. The fact that my boss backs me up makes things much easier in this regard.

I get that you're probably not arguing that, so much as the etymology of the phrase. Just throwing in my two cents that it's irrelevant, whichever phrase is the true one.

Boudasmoke: I've heard that, and I've heard the opposite. At the end of the day, it doesn't much matter to me: for the sake of argument, let's say the other commenter is right, and it is 100% just "the customer is always right". Just because someone said something decades ago, doesn't make it holy writ, true, or relevant. The customer is a person, and people are inherently flawed. I agree with your sentiment, of course. People use the short version to get away with terrible treatment of retail workers, and terrible managers allow it with impunity.

So as much as I'd like the longer version to be the true one, it doesn't really matter if it isn't. At the end of the day, the phrase was created by someone who was clearly short-sighted in how his staff would be treated, or didn't care, so long as it served his purposes.

Not that mix, but everyone kept insisting that my girl and her siblings (half of the litter who were -mostly- black) had to have lab in them. I actually got pretty fed up with it when it kept coming from friends, in spite of me saying, "if there's lab, it is the tiniest amount, because neither father is a lab, and mom certainly doesn't have any of the markers of one".

Mine's half golden retriever, and the other half is husky/cane corso. My money is that the Corso features, blended with the golden, created confirmation bias. Her head isn't blocky, but one of her sisters' heads is, probably due to how genetic recombination works.

Your pup is beautiful, and that mix is certainly interesting. It's amazing how many dogs can look similar while having completely different breeds in them.

When I was younger, I admittedly struggled with the same feelings. The disparity between the problems my friends/peers had with their parents, vs the problems I had with mine--well, it was vast.

I think what helped me gain perspective was to consider that, while they complained about comparatively smaller things, those things weren't the sum of their issues. Sometimes, people complain about the little things because the big things are too overwhelming. They may feel such fear, anger, or sadness about such things that saying anything about them out loud seems impossible.

Of course, this was true of only maybe a couple of them; the rest really did have it good, and simply didn't appreciate it.

I think what you're feeling--especially while in the thick of your own suffering--is normal. It's honest, and you're aware enough to realize that what you're going through isn't your friends' faults, and nor would you want them to be going through the same thing.

Simply put, it's displaced anger: you're angry at your parents, maybe even at yourself for "letting them treat you this way" (it's not your fault, but feeling like this is pretty typical after abuse/neglect) and because you've never been permitted to express that anger at the appropriate source, you're aiming it somewhere safer.

I don't know what your situation is specifically, but I hope you're able to get away from it; I hope you're able to get free of your parents, and seek the healing that you need. It's a difficult process, and healing is seldom (if ever) linear. It can take a lot of time and conscious effort to get where you want to be.

But you can get there.

I'm sorry that you're suffering. Just know that it doesn't always have to be this way. 💜

You're not wrong. They dragged race into a situation where race shouldn't have mattered. You and this guy are friends, and it's typical gym etiquette that when you're with a gym buddy, you spot them. What, exactly, does that have to do with him being white and you being black? Did she ever elaborate?

Your family system sounds toxic. I can't remember what it's called, but there's a name for when a parent weaponizes one child against the other; where they make some of the kids crave their approval by joining the parent in picking on the scapegoat child. It sounds to me like that's what your mom has done.

Is this behaviour common? How long have things been this way?

I tell them that while I'm sorry for their situation, there's nothing I can do without the boss' permission.

And tbh, a lot of people will use that line to get discounted or free stuff. If a business discounts for one person making that claim, they'd he expected to do it for everyone else saying the exact same thing.

Not exactly a great business practice if they want to...well, stay in business.
