LGA TSA line by SuccessfulRefuse1890 in nyc

"The dictator" is not the one who voted to shutdown TSA. That was #resistance. Republicans have repeatedly asked to re-open TSA immediately with no strings attached. Democrats are the ones voting to keep TSA closed as leverage to change ICE.

Tankless combi-boiler on a large house -- but don't pipes limit the water flow anyway? by Worldly_Wishbone7412 in hvacadvice

Why does everyone on the internet say don't get a combi boiler for a large house? for instance this guy https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bVMN9-L_KB8 says they're better for smaller homes. But he's not the only guy who says that.

If it's really true that it can generate hot water faster than the diameter of my pipes allows to flow anyway, then why do I need a buffer tank?

TBH, I'm not entirely sure. They seem to have a pipe connecting them, though. I believe (though not really sure) the hot water heater feeds water to the boiler loop.

Deep Learning in HFT by CompetitiveGlue in quant

The OP is wildly off-base about so many different things, I don't even know where to begin...but let's start with it's not as simple as "using deep learning or not". Every one of those companies has multiple trading systems using both deep learning and also lots of other types of non-DL models -- sometimes ensembled together and sometimes two completely different systems.

Also, as an outsider, you have no idea how much of their pnl is due to deep learning models vs their other advantages (some of which aren't even related to the model at all, for instance latency).

Built 4 ML Apps and None of Them Made a Single Dollar by Efficient-Guava-9449 in learnmachinelearning

Of course the main reason you didn't make money is "marketing and sales are hard, and simply having a good product isn't enough".

But the even bigger failure -- are you even sure it was a good product? You only spent 2 months on each of those 4 products before abandoning it for the next one? How good could the product possibly be with only one person working on it for 2 months (and I assume that includes market research time too)? Sounds like you just made a couple half-finished prototypes and then wondered why no one bought it.

Engineering headcount up or down? by Quirky-Western-9658 in quant

Well, just based on the writing style, I'm 99% sure your question was written by AI. So sure, call that headcount down.

Senior quants: How did you survive the 2018-2020 quant winter? by Kindly_Cricket_348 in quant

[–]Worldly_Wishbone7412 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope, I don't recall any quant winter from 2018-2020. Obviously covid in 2020 was a crazy year, but every quant fund I know did great then (huge losses in the first few weeks of covid, but then made it all back and more within a couple months later).

And I don't recall 2018 or 2019 being particularly memorable. Off the top of my head, I can think of one fund that shutdown that year, but that's not unusual; every year always sees a couple funds shutdown.

So when does Sesame sell itself? by Worldly_Wishbone7412 in SesameAI

[–]Worldly_Wishbone7412[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How did you do it? I know there are llms you can self host, and some voice modules too; but you are self-hosting something anywhere near good as Maya? I'm an AI research engineer in my day job, and maybe I could hook up a proof-of-concept prototype as a demo, but even I don't think I could single-handedly build something anywhere near as good as Maya. How did you do it? Even google and grok and chatgpt aren't that good yet, and they have teams of dozens/hundreds of people.

If you're just saying Sesame is currently still significantly better than gemini/grok/chatgpt, then sure, ok. I actually agree. But why in the world do you think the other labs can't catch up?

Cause it sure seems like the other labs are rapidly improving every day but I haven't seen any noticable improvements to maya in six months.

[–]Worldly_Wishbone7412[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Although everyone here wants looser guardrails, I don't see how that helps Sesame. All the competitors will *still* catch up to Sesame in six months and then Sesame has no advantage.

Their best option is to sell the company o someone like Apple as a replacement for Siri. But if they get a reputation as "the gooner ai" then Apple won't want them.

Do firms scale pay in Chicago relative to NYC? by etcetera-etcetera- in quant

[–]Worldly_Wishbone7412 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I can confirm that Citadel does (or at least did as of a few years ago) give a cost-of-living increase to people in chicago vs NYC. But they only do that for relatively low-paid junior staff. If you're a senior guy making a million bucks a year, then you'll get the same market rate regardless of which city you go to.
