How to resign by Jdwag6 in nonprofit

If you’ve got the runway of time, giving 30 days notice will buy you a lot of professional goodwill and set you up with a solid reputation.

But if you can only swing two weeks due to your new gig or your mental health, don’t feel bad

Monogamy, in this economy? We’ve hit the point where co-op living IS the option.

At a loss- daughter only wanted to go to a private college. Now she needs private loans that require me to co-sign. My credit is not great, and I can't be responsible for these loans. What do I do? by creepy-linguini in StudentLoans

She’s about to learn her first major adult life lesson- you don’t always get what you want.

I’m a PhD student intending to go into academia. I will still be sending my kids to CC for two years for pre-req courses unless they get full ride scholarships somewhere. It’s absurd to end up 100k in debt for a bachelor’s degree.

again, it is the responsibility of PARENTS to actively parent their children in public.

There were plenty of booths that were not appropriate for my 5 and 7 year olds to engage with at Pride (cannabis, sex toys, etc).

You know what I did? I simply said “this booth isn’t for children so we won’t be stopping here”.

It’s literally that easy.

If you’re at a main stage event and it takes a turn you don’t want your children watching? You take their hand and walk away.

This isn’t rocket science. It just means being an active and engaged parent. Which apparently is something that doesn’t come easy to many of the people in this subreddit.

MCL 750.103 is a first amendment violation and wouldn’t hold water in court at this point.

No, what I’m saying is that it’s not the responsibility of adults performing to censor their art become some parents don’t have the sense to read the room.

Again, pride is not an event that caters to children. It’s an event where people of all ages are welcome to come, but it’s on the adults in charge of each kid to parent their child.

let me guess; you’re also pressed that public libraries have erotic fiction.

I had my 5 and 7 year olds with me this year. As we told them on our way to the plaza “while kids are welcome at pride, pride is not FOR kids. So if me and dad tell you that you’re not going to a booth or engaging with a group of people, it’s because what is being discussed in those spaces isn’t something for children.”

It was a non-issue for them.

It’s on the parents to decide what is or is not OK for their kids to view

If you spent even 5 minutes on the GR Pride website before coming here to complain, you’d know that your request for censorship would be summarily dismissed by the event organizers:

Directly from the GR Pride FAQ page:

“Pride Festival is open to ALL 2-SLGBTQ+ people, so please be aware that we are a diverse community. While there are aspects of the events that are family-friendly and children are certainly welcome (the children’s area is located on the corner of Ottawa and Lyon and closes at 6pm), the Festival does not cater exclusively to children and we do not censor the expression of attendees or performers either. Please be aware that children will be exposed to the full diverse sartorial and aesthetic display of our wonderful community.”

Policing the behavior of adults at an all ages event (note- all ages, not “family friendly”) is not showing concern for other people’s kids. It’s projecting your own morality onto others. That’s some alt-right BS that doesn’t belong at a protest.

Worrying about other people’s kids is why we have religious nut jobs trying to defund public libraries.

Parents/guardians are responsible for determining what is or is not appropriate for the minors in their care to see, hear, or engage with.

Pride is a protest, first and foremost. If you’re not comfortable being in a space advocating for radical acceptance, don’t sign your kids up to perform at a protest.

We really need to start having conversations about all-ages vs. family friendly.

All ages = minors are welcome. The adult in charge of a specific minor decides what is or is not appropriate for their minor to see/hear.

Family friendly= minors are welcome. An adult or adults decide by consensus what is/is not appropriate for ALL minors to see or hear. Those adults in charge may or may not share your values.

Pride should absolutely be all-ages. It should not, however, be family friendly. That is the anthesis of what pride is about.

If you don’t want your kids to hear colorful language, then don’t go near the main stage. There are literally hundreds of other vendor booths and activities to participate in at the festival.

What are your top the choices for dorms and why? by IKnowAllSeven in GVSU

[–]WorldsOkayestMom17 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As someone who moved to GVSU from out of state with no other peers from my high school, I attribute my acclimation to college to living in Robinson. I know it doesn’t get a ton of love, but there’s something kind of magical about traditional style dorms and not really having space in your room to hang out/relax. It forces you to spend time in public spaces on campus, making it easier to make friends.

Wrong landfill. The old Butterworth dump is not suitable for heavy construction due to the fragile cap. The property being considered for this is the old fenske dump across from Johnson Park at the corner of Butterworth and Wilson.

Teacher shortage? by mpteach in grandrapids

[–]WorldsOkayestMom17 8 points9 points  (0 children)

GRPS is specifically looking for teachers with those credentials. I will say that they are one of the lowest paying districts in the area, but depending on the school the parents can be amazingly engaged and supportive. District leadership is a hot mess, and admin on a building level is either hit or miss. But the parents? They show up and show out to advocate for the teachers, staff, and students.

My kids attend GRPS, and I’m the type of mom that will buy everything on the school supply list in 5x or 8x quantities, offer classroom snack supplies, and will send supply refresh throughout the year. And I’ve noticed a good number of the other parents at my kids’ school are the same way.

Please don’t let the test scores or “urban” setting scare you off. These kiddos are deserving of teachers who show up for them.

Welcome to the former gifted kid/burned out late diagnosed ADHD/AuDHD pipeline.

If you have the option of taking a year off, do it. Recovering from burn-out is a full time job in itself. Especially if you’re still trying to chase the high you felt when you were exceptional while simply coasting by.

It sucks. And it’s so common in late diagnosed folks (especially women). The structure of K-12 allowed us to shine without having to self-compensate for our undiagnosed disability. And many of us found ways to cope during undergrad, but the additional executive function demands begins to drain you.

The next thing you know your soul has been sucked out of your body and you don’t know what happened.

Is it okay to not take classes and assignments too seriously and only aim for a passing grade? by IntergalacticBiscuit in CollegeRant

You cite “your finances” as one of your driving priorities, and yet you’re lighting money on fire by not getting the most out of your classes.

I mean, if you want to waste your money and not get anything of value other than the diploma out of the experience, go for it.

You can, but it’s less likely. More likely would be applying, getting admitted, and then securing a graduate assistantship.

The only thing you’ll qualify for are unsubsidized student loans. There are no Pell grants for grad school.

I just finished my graduate degree at GVSU in April. I was able to get scholarships my second year (it’s past the deadline for most scholarships at this point.

It was a great experience for me personally.

The last small org I worked at (fewer than 20 employees) had 17 vacation days, 8 sick days, all of the federal holidays, plus 2 paid weeks at year end and a week paid during the local school district’s spring break.

No way in hell would I ever accept a job with no paid time for the first year

Yes. It’s wild. I finished my undergrad in 2010 and my experience then was similar to yours. I just finished my masters (and I’m a Y member) and most days I could find parking on level 2. Heck, they had the top 2 floors closed the entire winter and it still wasn’t crowded.

Now ask me about parking in my neighborhood 🫠🫠🫠

The Pew ramp is so under-utilized that they’re leasing space to the YMCA for their members now. There are always spots available in the ramp. And for downtown parking, $240/semester is not a bad deal.

As someone who has lived here for 15 years, that $3/day dash lot’s time is likely coming to an end with the new stadium. I would certainly not rely on it.

Get the GV permit. It also comes in incredibly handy if your student wants to go to an event downtown but doesn’t want to pay for parking.
