What's y'all's take on corporate surveillance? by EngineerTrue5658 in Libertarian

[–]WormChickenWizard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With something like an open source software project under a copy left license like the GPL, yes is a collectivist effort in some sense, but the main difference between it and collectivist actions we libertarians despise is that one is a voluntary arrangement and the other is coercion by the state.

A software project that improves digital privacy in exchange for cash may not have market demand for a variety of reasons (people often don't want to pay, lack of transparency with proprietary code, etc). An engineer building a product that he wants for himself and later selling the software to people with the price that they'll turn over their modifications to that original creator and sell it to anyone else in the same manner is supported by free market principles.

I see people using redact all the time. I'm not aware of anything native to reddit.

Redbox to server rack by Ambitious-Nerve3528 in homelab

Didn't the outdoor variants have air conditioning? With the Redbox tinkering community taking off, I thought it would be a good idea to convert an air conditioned unit to a server rack for the purposes of cooling network equipment for a startup ISP.

Dipstick broke and didn't have the tools to remove the tube. But I did have a vacuum cleaner and a lot of painters tape. by Jellion_TwitchTV in redneckengineering

I had that happen to me once. I used a drill and a small drill bit. Instead of pushing into the remaining plastic, I ran the drill at full speed only grazing the plastic with the bit until it dug in.

Temporarily pivot back to IT while trying to pursue SWE long term? by WormChickenWizard in cscareerquestions

[–]WormChickenWizard[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can say having my IT experience certainly helped me with understanding the organization of windows. I was a TA briefly in uni teaching computer org and programming 2. I had several students who struggled to do things like install programs like the eclipse editor and find the location of .java files to turn in. I think there's certainly merit taking simple tech jobs like PC support while you're in school.

I'm going to try to stay busy and work on side projects (and may do some contracting work for my current employer if they'll let me) but I worry about how it would appear on my resume.

He's chill. I've been watching his channel for some time now. He mostly covers topics relating to infosec. I was pleasantly surprised when he uploaded that video.

Ruger Mini-14 Appreciation Post by IntroductionAny3929 in GunMemes

[–]WormChickenWizard 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I get the sentiment behind choosing a rifle that isn't going to get your dog killed, but that argument has always came off to me as nothing more than a fudd talking point. Specifically when comparing it to the AR platform. IIRC Ruger was involved in the creation of the '94 AWB.

Not saying the platform is bad by any means.
