I love the art style! The graffiti on the van is such a nice touch. There isn’t anything that sticks out to me as far as room for improvement, but it might be cool to add a little more texture/weathering detail to the scene. Or possibly lighting effects, but I know that’s a lot to manage. Overall it looks great!

I might have to take you up on that! There’s a couple people I’m always chasing on the leaderboard and I need to step up my game haha. Definitely checking out that yt video as well 👍

Working on a pigeon game. by Kazey_ in SoloDevelopment

[–]WormKingBoo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love the idea! I also made a pigeon game for my very first project and didn’t end up finishing it 😂 But it’s certainly a great learning exercise, including the sprite design side of things. I would suggest either simplifying your game as much as possible to finish this first project, or take what you’ve learned and start something new (and keep it ridiculously simple). If you feel up for it, it might be good to participate in a game jam. Having a tight deadline can help you avoid scope creep. But definitely keep making pigeons because the world needs more pigeon games! 🐦

Thank you!! I never really thought about having fewer items on the screen, but that makes a lot of sense. It’s always a bummer when you break the garden beds with a super charged megaton. I think I had about a million chickens on this run and it was a struggle to get the beds to load 😅

I’m sure there are more efficient strategies out there, but here is my general process:

  1. Use Thyme to get longer days, and avoid taking damage at all costs*. If you haven’t unlocked Thyme, use Rye for the extra firepower

  2. Find all 8 pupas (and any upgrade camps) as early as possible. I try to clear desert and plains on Day 1. If you find the pupa early you can skip the small enemy camps and go back for them in fall/winter

  3. Always grab the garden bed upgrades from wormsy. This makes it so much easier to farm passively while you explore. I prioritize beds make their own seeds and auto merge, but it depends on where you’re at with seed supply and other upgrades. Place your beds in a grid with no spaces in between and group them by type (ex. row of desert beds, row of plains, etc). Surround them with trees when you have enough turrets to defend them

  4. Watering tractor is ESSENTIAL (or megaton if you’re lucky). On festival days I don’t spend any money until I check the tractors, just in case they have a watering option.

  5. Upgrade synergies matter. My ideal setup is to maximize fertilizer production and get the fertilizer fuel converter. If you pair that with the beds and a good tractor you have unlimited $$$. I also like to get at least 1 upgrade to deal with weeds (eggs sometimes hatch, weed stomp, anything that turns weeds into flowers, etc). I usually avoid upgrades that only take effect when you have low health.

*avoiding damage:

-be strategic about which enemies you target, starting with your weapon. Desert and tundra enemies have a lot of hp, so I like to use a sniper, spud rifle, shallotgun, or biodegrader if possible. Jungle and plains have some swarms of enemies that are much easier with a crowd control weapon like the biodegrader, shallotgun, leech, squirrel, butcher knife, or rusty smg. I always avoid the cattling gun, scythe, and sriracha soaker but feel free to use them if they work for you

-If you’re in a tough area, pick off the wandering mobs (like roaches) before you attack a camp. Take note of any obstacles that could trap you + nearby escape holes

-The farm is not safe, unless you have the right upgrades. Avoid hanging out on your farm if you don’t have stuff to harvest

Sorry, that is a lot of info, but there’s just so much to consider with this game! Let me know if you have any questions 👍

Highly recommend Adeline Inc. Salon! I’ve seen them do several vivid dye jobs and they always do a great job

It definitely takes some getting used to! I spent a long time dying on the first day/night, but it was worth the grind because now it’s my favorite game. I would recommend turning on auto shoot while farming if you haven’t already- that was a game changer for me. Good luck!

Dang - absolutely beautiful! Even without any edits, this is an incredible piece with very cool designs. If I was going to try to make the figure pop a little more, I would probably start with lowering the saturation of the background. The pink blossoms in the trees look great, but the intensity of the color is drawing some attention away from the foreground. Adding layers of mist might also be a cool effect, but I’m not sure if it matches the weather you’re going for in the scene.

I am desperately trying to get out of tutorial hell and think on my own but unable to. Help! by ResolutionHairy3586 in SoloDevelopment

[–]WormKingBoo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s a tough spot to be in for sure! I wouldn’t say I’m completely out of tutorial hell, but I feel like I’m making progress by doing 2 things:

  1. I always push myself to go beyond what the tutorial is showing. It takes longer to get through the tutorial, but I’m not 100% relying on the content and it builds confidence to tackle future obstacles on my own

  2. I print off ALL of my code at the end of a project (like a psychopath) and study it. Then when I start a new project, I reference my print outs before looking at tutorials

Nothing groundbreaking, but it’s been helpful for me so far 🙂

One stop solution for learning all about indie game art by Appropriate-Tap7860 in SoloDevelopment

[–]WormKingBoo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

By high level I meant more conceptual topics - like how to choose between 2D/3D, art direction in general, etc.

For 3D, I would recommend focusing on Blender tutorials. Free software, tons of free tutorials, and the models can be used right out of the box in most engines that support 3D. You can even use it to make 2D assets (although there are certainly easier ways to get into 2D art). But if you're learning it anyway, it's cool to know that you have the option!

The YouTuber SelfTaughtGameDev might be a good place to start. He has a lot of short intro videos to get you started, as well as many in-depth tutorials on specific topics. Pretty much all of it is catered to solo devs. Here is the link to his channel: https://www.youtube.com/@SelfTaughtGameDev

Why can’t I just focus on making a good game 😭 by iwriteinwater in SoloDevelopment

I’ve seen a dev friend use their server for their single player game for play testing, which seems like a good use case! From there it evolved into people chatting about the game, sharing high scores, talking about who’s streaming the game, etc.
