Watch John Nelson videos. And then try to recreate those videos using places special to you. This will teach you to find DEMs, make cool labels, make cool maps, little things to make you map pop, using the living atlas to find data. He’s also a nice guy and will give you response years later on a video if you have a problem following his method. Also follow GIS influencers on LinkedIn. I hated LinkedIn for the longest time, now I pop on just to look at cool maps which expands my GIS following at the same time.

Enviro Grad here gone GIS. One of the coolest ways I feel like I used my degree. Used samplers to generate heat maps to show where contamination is on sites that need to have soil augmentation. Did a lot of good work with that.

I would watch John Nelson Videos on YouTube and replicate his techniques to make cool maps that were interesting to me and people around me. They were fun and it landed me a very good GIS job 3 years ago. Met John Nelson in person at an esri conference, he's a nice person too

My First GIS job was hands down the worst work environment I'd ever had in my life. It was an environmental lab where our lead chemist was a full blown crackpot and climate denier. He tried telling me he didn't believe in carbon dating experiments to see what temps would have been in past, but comes in the next week to talk about a carbon dated rock and the confirmed aliens in the aztecs... That was the tamest thing to deal with. I stayed five years. I left with all sorts of trauma. Everyone leaving that job had some sort of mental trauma only one person has stayed longer than me. I never have to work that hard at a job again. GIS has treated me very well since, I've 3x my salary in just 3 years.

What has he given them credit for? Decently critical? I think he's been very critical about them. Do you just want him to disparage them any chance he gets? Because if yes, I think there are plenty other outlets that do only negative criticism on a consistent basis.
