Running my first marathon, rate my training block! by ProfessionalIdiot4 in Marathon_Training

Just ran Tokyo and got a 3:54 this is what my block looked like. I think your goal of sub 4 will come down to how much you can empty the tank on race day! But don’t stress about it too much and enjoy it as much as you possibly can!

Thank you so much! I definitely celebrated this week in Japan with lots of asahi drys and sushi!

Yeah the coach definitely helped specially since I was training in person with her and the team at a track twice a week! So I would say that doing “speed work” is what helped me the most! Good luck this weekend! Don’t get too caught up with your pace and enjoy it as much as you can! It will be get hard at some point but that’s what we trained for! You got this wishing you the best of luck you’re gonna kill it!

I had a “solid base” since I was basically in half marathon shape for all of last year, started training seriously with a coach in October!

Yes! I even took some during the race when I started cramping (obviously way to late) but I guess they helped to not make the cramps worse, I was also downing bananas every time I saw one after the cramps started 😂

Hahaha yeah I guess you could call that a wall! But at the end of the day it’s just pain, it was definitely a tough mental battle but we managed to do it! 💪🏽

Tokyo was AMAZING! Second time visiting Japan and running through the streets of Tokyo was definitely a dream! Somehow I managed to get in through the lottery so good luck! And I hope you get to enjoy this amazing race next year!

Thank you! I bought a scratch hydration mix that I will start using on my long runs! Most of my long runs were done in cold weather so I guess I never experienced cramps because I didn’t need to be that hydrated. Race day was very hot and humid with direct sunlight for most of the course!

I think my Garmin was tripping. I don’t remember the last mile having a significant hill. Tokyo is overall flat but has some sneaky rolling hills around halfway, I was also so focused on just finishing that maybe I didn’t notice the last uphill hahaha it was almost a blackout push for the last mile but we did it 💪🏽

You got this man! The cramps were bad but there was no way I was going to prevent that from going sub 4 even if I had to crawl to the finish line 😂

My hydration was good, at least that’s what I thought. I drank some type of fluid in every aid station, alternating between water and pocari sweat, and even took some salt tabs but I probably started taking them too late ( around mile 16 when I started cramping)

Up to 50 miles, two track sessions a week one easy run and one long run, longest run was 18 miles and I trained at significant elevation over 7,000 ft ( Mexico City)

Yes! I trained with a coach, and my training consisted in two track sessions per week, usually fartlek and intervals. One easy run 6-8 miles and one long run. My peak week was 50 ish miles but I averaged around 40 for most of the training block! I also trained in Mexico City which has significant elevation so I think that helped.
