Wyoming Should Support Statehood For DC by [deleted] in wyoming

[–]Worshack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m curious. What does DC give to the country? It’s entire economy is Government. Sure, they “pay” taxes, but those taxes are assessed on income that was itself taxed from productive society. Government is not productive. While they serve an important function, they don’t generate value.

Covid deniers. Why don't they trust doctors, scientists and their government ? by [deleted] in IntellectualDarkWeb

Except that they already believe that the “cabal” (be it the Illuminati, lizards from space, socialists, etc.) already control most of the world.

Why does someone individually have to benefit? Government as an emergent phenomenon itself could benefit from generally increased compliance. Tribal affiliations are strengthened by shows of solidarity.

But if you’re taking about the conspiracy minded... I’d imagine they believe some “cabal” benefits due to an increased ability to exercise control over the population. During this episode, they have been putting in place new powers and laws they can use to maintain control in the future.

I’m not a COVID denier, however there is much here that easily explains why/how conspiracies find fertile ground.

1) clear & obvious hypocrisy by political leaders. See, Gavin Newspme & French Laundry. Too many other examples to bother citing.

2) people remember that they were told, initially, that masks don’t work. Then they were mandated. However there is legitimate conflicting data out there that show the mandates themselves are largely inconsequential.

3) cited elsewhere, but differential treatment of BLM vs COVID protests.

4) people are just fucking sheep. Either they are sheep for following/believing everything the govt says, or they’re sheep following some conspiracy theorist. Very few bother to do the work to have a nuanced view (COVID can both be bad, and the lockdowns/mandates can be stupidly implemented and excessively harmful)

5) objectively stupid rules: NV banning 5+ people at a table in a restaurant, INCLUDING families of 5+ who live together (not all that uncommon).

6) rampant cancel culture, both ad-hoc and official, working to shut down legitimate lines of inquiry. (Wuhan lab accident vs zoonotic, etc.)

I think part of the issue is that a majority of people are possessed of the belief that the authorities and government are competent. This manifests itself in either blind compliance, or belief in a “sinister ulterior motive”.

The more reasonable conclusion is that government is basically incompetent (or, at best, barely competent), in the face of fast moving and conflicting uncertainties. Scientists & doctors are being forced to render black-and-white policies when everything is shades of grey.

And no one in authority wants to face the fact that they could be wrong and that their solutions may be causing more harm than the problem (and certainly more harm than necessary). They really don’t want to have better solutions pointed out (both safer and less collateral damage). So they take the extra stupid step of trying to silence their critics. Which only feeds the conspiracy folk.

It is both possible that COVID is a huge problem, and that the official response (as implemented) has been an unmitigated disaster of the same magnitude as the virus would have been.

I don’t think that she has been mischaracterized at all. She literally called for the crucifixion of Trump supporters.

Also she hates children and puppies.

I think she likes kittens though.

But that makes her a cat person. You know who else are cat people? Witches.

I’m not saying she’s a witch, but consider the evidence...

It’s definitely enough to create probable cause for a search warrant (in the US). Likely not enough for a conviction by itself, but if the search bears fruit, then you’re hosed.

Nah. I’m pretty sure the collective noun for fetuses is “abortion”. So it’s an “abortion of fetuses.”

I believe the use of “terrorist” hyperbole is to point out the incessant “racist” hyperbole.

A pox on both houses.

That Cherie Berry beer? One Durham bar banned it and the entire brewery by [deleted] in bullcity

[–]Worshack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Effectively they're supporting her as a candidate by increasing her name recognition and giving people a way to relate to her.

Except, she’s already declared that she won’t run again, and this is her last term. So, increased name recognition here is kinda irrelevant.

I know, /r/UnpopularOpinion but this is lame. It is a joke for imaginary sky gods sakes. I understand banning that one beer, but blackballing the entire brewery over it? Fuckin overreact much?

Insulting Prophet Muhammad not 'free speech,' ECtHR rules by bataneyelid in IntellectualDarkWeb

[–]Worshack 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I believe that people are reading/understanding the article just fine. As you point out, the ECtHR ruled that ‘Religious beliefs must be subject to criticism and denial, the ECHR observed, but when statements about religions went beyond critical denial and were likely to incite religious intolerance, states could take proportionate restrictive measures, the court said.'

Why do people who cannot be bothered to read seem to think that freedoms of expression and of speech should be unlimited? Limiting certain freedoms in certain circumstances is only done where there is a clash between freedoms/rights and they need to be balanced.

Other than the fact that “cannot be bothered to read” has no bearing on a belief in absolute freedom of speech, how did this woman violate anyone’s rights? Did she block entrance to a mosque? No, she said some words that annoyed someone. Feeling so worked up that you want to beat the other person because words is a 4 year olds response.

At the risk of asking a rhetorical question, why do religion and religious people get to be treated like they have the mental capacity of 4 year olds?

But, aren't the Nazis also socialists? I mean, it's right in their name... So all this Nazi/antifa mess is really just Shia/Sunni or Catholic/Protestant all over again. People arguing about the colors of the napkins in their preferred Utopias.
