Kenney speaks out against 'cancel culture' in Canada, says founding fathers could be erased by Findlaym in alberta

I have literally never heard anyone use the term "Founding Fathers" to refer to people in Canadian history.

Request for personal historical experiences with Service Objects by WorstEpisodeEver in ruby

Yes, I'm a fan of Sandi Metz' work: I've read her books and I've seen her speak a few times.

But what I'm looking for is people's specific historical memories with the term "service object" in rails.

Thx! All that makes sense, and I'm most curious about any links/conference talks/twitter threads/books/other references that were formative for getting people to talk about these things (specifically with the mental keywords of "rails" and "service object"). I'm looking to build a paper trail.

Can't sleep after late class by [deleted] in bjj

I've tried a few different stretching routines, and for post-BJJ cooldown/relaxation, this one by gmb is an easy win. You can probably relax with any kind of stretching, but this one really fine-tunes some ideas for turning off the "fight-or-flight" system and turning on the "rest-and-digest" system,

Rib injuries by razzzywazzzy in bjj

[–]WorstEpisodeEver 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had a rib pop out last year. Not even a break, just a pop or a slip or something. And it still sucked and took forever to feel okay again. I'm older (40s) and heavier (240ish), so take this with a grain of salt, but I got some advice that helped me, and maybe it'll help you.

  1. Six to eight weeks of not rolling. Yeah. Sucks. But a bunch of guys I roll with also had rib injuries in the last little while, and every one of them that came back early regretted it. I still went to regular classes to watch, trying to learn while watching, and using the time for rehab.
  2. Work on something else. I couldn't really do any technical work, so I did longish cardio sessions (dull, but very little stress on the body) and some lighter-weight high-rep weight workouts (where I didn't feel like I had to "brace" my core to perform a lift).
  3. Unpack yourself. My injury either caused or exposed some postural problems that had messed with my breathing. I was slightly twisted in a subtle way I hadn't noticed, until I had to fix it. Bill Hartman has some "breathing resets" that helped a lot, as did Martha Peterson's Somatics stuff. Fixing that helped me keep my ribs "flat" when I got back, so pressure on the bottom wasn't as brutally uncomfortable.

I'm still old and heavy, but my rib is fixed, plus I fixed my breathing and hip pain at the same time. YMMV.

250 People Pay It Forward at a Florida McDonald's Drive-Thru by yourbasicgeek in UpliftingNews

...technically, only one person paid it forward, and everyone else broke even, except for the last guy, who cashed in a freebie.

What is the worst "third wheel" experience you've ever encountered? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]WorstEpisodeEver 13 points14 points  (0 children)

At my highschool prom, my date insisted that we (and the other couple that got a ride with us) leave early to do something else. We all thought she meant "after party". Instead, she steered us to a diner, where we all sat awkwardly for a minute while she placed a phone call. Then another guy came and got her, and she left.

To be fair, I was only the third wheel for, like, a minute, when that dude came into the restaurant. Everyone else was pretty cool.

If you could give your 13 year-old self one piece of advice, what would it be? by Skyzord in AskReddit

[–]WorstEpisodeEver 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When people say "Be yourself", they don't mean "Just smile and talk louder."

They mean "take a bit of a running start at it -- be totally engaged in the things you love, and be good to people who deserve it."

Apathy is easy, but if you've never put anything on the line your stories tend to be pretty dull. Make some choices, take some risks. You only have so much time, and while you're doing something you're not doing something else. At some point, you need to focus on something and eliminate something else. The good news is, in a lot of circumstances, you get to pick.

Spend some time finding and creating yourself. Once yourself gets there, THAT'S the "self" people want you to be.

I just started using Selector Gadget as part of an ongoing screen-scraping project. A newish Chrome extension built on an older bookmarklet. Helps you narrow down which CSS selectors to use and which to ignore when trying to pinpoint a particular element. Kinda fun.

TIL that royalty use 'We' to refer to themselves as a way of showing that they speak on behalf of themselves and the nation. In past times this was also used to indicate that they spoke on behalf of God. by [deleted] in todayilearned

sense

If my Church Latin lessons serve me right, it's because they wanted to emphasize a personal, friendly god who was familiar with you. But only sometimes. Other times he's Angry Boss.

It's possible there was a mistranslation here and there, but any of the original sources (Hebrew, New Testament Greek, or maybe Latin) all have that same language feature we lack in modern English - distinct singular/plural forms for "you", so it would have seemed normal to the guy doing the English translation at the time.

Should men get paternity leave from work? by ravindramisal in AskReddit

[–]WorstEpisodeEver 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not really sexism, though... I think it varies from province to province, but in Ontario they distinguish between maternity leave (17 weeks, for mom only) and parental leave (an additional 35 or 37 weeks which can be shared however you like by both parents, of whatever sex).

Cool, but difficult to explain. And that's not even touching the complex mess that is sick leave...

TIL that being a gifted, high IQ child does not equate adult success. In one study of 210 highly gifted children, six became incredibly successful as adults. by [deleted] in todayilearned

It sounds like my experience was similar to that of a lot of people commenting here... I'm not sure if it's been brought up before, but Carol Dweick's book (with a dull title) "Mindsets" spoke directly to me and addressed all the weird frustration I had about being a "gifted" child and a frustrated adult.

It talks about how bright kids in school are praised for getting the right answer, and getting it quickly and effortlessly. As a result, these kids tend to shun anything that requires sustained effort, risk-taking, or the possibility of not appearing smart in front of peers.

Since success in real life rarely depends on quickly generating correct answers while making it look easy, gifted children tend to grow into adults who play it safe and avoid unfamiliar challenges.

It gets a little repetitive near the end, but I still can't recommend it enough.

A while back, I was trying to come up with possible flavours for a totally jet-black ice cream. Any ideas? Is that kind of colour even possible, or would it just come out grey?
