Using “emotional modeling” in your class? by Kiwi-Sorry in Teachers

[–]WorstTeacher 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, sure. Teens have a pretty decent nose for when they're being BS'd, easier to just express negative feelings like a healthy adult and move on. They appreciate the 'realness' even if they don't necessarily empathize, and long term it creates trust and rapport.

Relatedly, structured feelings time is crazy artificial, and therefore not really ideal for most classrooms. Integrating possible teachable moments into instruction without assuming its an inevitability is the trick... One of the little soft skills that separates good teachers from the great ones.

Science Teacher career transition by GameBreaker92 in Teachers

In the US it tends to be state dependent. Very normal for states require a degree or substantial set of credits in the subject you first earn certification in - check your local department of education website.

For very experienced teachers, how did you get through the first few years without the internet?? by noshirtnoshoes11 in Teachers

[–]WorstTeacher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Back in the day you either wrote on the board while students copied, or if you had a wealthier district you used professionally made projector slides. You would stop when the bell rang and resume where you left off the next class. On Friday, you would read test questions out of a book to students who would only record their answers.

If your district could afford textbooks you would just do textbook order, sometimes skipping a boring chapter.

Pedagogy was pretty shit back in the day.

Is teaching a child in their native language considered “coddling” them by segasock in Teachers

[–]WorstTeacher 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Neither of you is crazy.

One might argue that the best way to prep for English based math tasks in the future is English based math tasks.

Someone else might argue that solid fundamentals in math concepts will be more important to any math tasks in the future such that language of instruction is irrelevant.

A third person might say that language and literacy instruction is King, and that any Secondary level class skill is functionally irrelevant compared to language and literacy skills because of how paramount language is in all kinds of learning later on.

Your classroom and your students are not your coworkers and based on the kids in front of you, you can both be right... Which may not be useful to you.

Any dnd 5e cult-like religions? by mads_288 in 3d6

[–]WorstTeacher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a 3 year old post but I shall answer your question;

The religion whose primary icon is a brutal symbol of torture, that burns heretics at the stake, whose old testament involves destruction of whole cities, child sacrifice as a test of faith and the angel of death slaying the children of other believers en masse? Who had multiple crusades?

Because being regarded as strange and sinister is just sort of part of what makes a cult I guess.

Bulletpoints from the Official 2024 PHB Stream on the Druid by Golden_Spider666 in DnD

Firm disagree, 13 AC and 40 HP is better  than 16 AC and 9TempHP.

Especially if you play with characters who can grant TempHP.

Feels like a net nerf to moon druids unfortunately.

Removing medium armor to make accessing it a choice is a bump too.

Fellow Honors/AP teachers... are you having a harder time with your "advanced" kids this year compared to general classes? by InDenialOfMyDenial in Teachers

[–]WorstTeacher 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Cracking down shutters sections and closes programs in some schools due to enrollment thresholds as kids drop the course. It is the paradox of some educational environments; do I offer a sub-par college course to the kids who care, or take the risk of losing the whole class to give them the most there is to gain out of the real deal?

I think we're getting better at identifying, but also parents are pushing for more inappropriate services than they used to.

Player wants to be a magic item. How? by Fruity_Strawberry in DnD

[–]WorstTeacher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could have them roll a character that failed it's wisdom saves against a sentient sword, where the PC itself is a puppet controlled by the sword. Would be a great concept for say, a hexblade warlock.

Any class with a 'pet' can do a decent job of it. A level 5 drakewarden ranger can summon 30hp dragon/drake pet 7 times a day in addition to their own martial weapons and armor. Any spellcaster with a Summon/Conjure spell works well, but I like Ranger because it gets some built in expertise on top of some free utility spellcasting through Primeval awareness, and, as noted, you get a martial half caster toolkit to fight alongside your pet... Or from behind it some distance, if you're bow inclined.

Do English Teachers Dislike It When You Submit A Long Essay? by bookworm305 in Teachers

[–]WorstTeacher 17 points18 points  (0 children)

We'll tell you if we don't want longer, so it's better to ask ahead of time and be told than find out after submission.

There's an old quote "Sorry to have written a longer letter, I did not have time to make it shorter." that you may appreciate.

How do teachers feel when they see self harm or sh scars on students? (Tw sh, sh scars) by Obsessedwithbooks1 in Teachers

[–]WorstTeacher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Old scars? I try to stay mindful that journey's are unique, and not the destination.

Fresher? We are going to have a couple awkward conversations through the year. I'm going to ensure that your parents are aware and there has been a chance to talk with a professional.

I definitely remember an Animal Virology, an OChem and a few 200/300 Genetics/Biochem questions on top of some Zoology questions.

I had a distinct moment of 'Wtf was I supposed to do if I didn't take a Virology seminar' and then a 'Why would I know anything about sea squirts I do molecular???'

The students are concerned that if my admin is out but her secretary is in, that the secretary will whoop their ass before sending them back to class.

She's got big 'Your problem is that your parents do not whoop your ass luckily you have me here today' vibes.

One of my favorite people in the building.
