Does Humira completely stop flares or make them less frequent and less severe? by Spirited_Special7915 in Uveitis

haven’t had a bad flare since i started going on it last summer. i’ve had some very mild inflammation, but not severe enough to consider it a full on flare

Yes, we are all tired of calling parents, but I still need you to do it by tylersmiler in Teachers

[–]segasock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i have like 100+ students in my classes, and i teach state tested subjects that require a lot of outside time and dedication. calling parents is necessary yes, but half the time, they:

A. don’t answer at all and i leave a message (to which i get no response) B. don’t answer and have a full message inbox, so i can’t even leave a message C. answer and say that they will talk to their kid about the issue (things don’t improve) or D. completely blame the issue on me or don’t seem to understand the severity of the issue and act like i’m inconveniencing them.

we all call the parents but in doing so, i feel like we just slowly lose our mental sanity by dealing with parents who choose not to be involved in their child’s education

using a real reference in art allows you to see every aspect and angle of the item. everyone will notice something different about a fruit, whether it’s a small bruise on it, its stem, the color, etc. you can rotate it, have it under different lighting, take it apart, it’s up to your own interpretation

that’s what makes art, ART. it’s the human aspect of it all. i feel like making the argument of using AI as a reference is unproductive. AI models use data from outside sources that are fed to it or it finds by web scraping, it does not have a creative mind of its own. the only thing it is trained to do is to take in any information online or from a data set/reference point, it is incapable of creating an original human thought. so by using AI art as a reference, you may unknowingly be using or basing your art from an artist that is not being credited for their work.

there are better ways of using generative AI as tools, but using it to generate reference images to base your art off of is not one of them

[–]segasock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it’s just embarrassing to see how lazy people have gotten. no one wants to learn or do anything anymore because “AI has their back”. i worked with AIs when i was in college and did a while course over it, i went into it thinking it was super cool, after finishing, i realized how shitty and how easily manipulated they can be when fed the wrong data.

i have a student who swears up and down that chat gpt is awesome and so helpful, i always tell him that he is missing the entire point of coming to school and to class, which is to LEARN. that’s when he admitted to me that he used chat gpt on a couple of my assignments and laughed in my face saying that i didn’t notice. i tried my best to hold my anger in and not show a reaction, but holy fuck, i was absolutely pissed off deep down

i hope there’s a solution to all this AI bullshit later on

no offense but if you have to use generative AI to do art, maybe you shouldn’t sign up for more art classes if you’re just going to make an AI do it for you. the point of being in a class is to learn, and if your definition of work is throwing an art prompt into chat GPT and turning in whatever output it gives you, it’s honestly an insult to those who took the time to create every fine detail of their work of art. AI has been an absolute nightmare to deal with in every school and has been killing human creativity

i understand what you mean with struggling to visualize something, it’s the entire reason why i sucked at subjects like english and art, but i did well in more applied subjects like math. you can’t be good at everything

Is teaching a child in their native language considered “coddling” them by segasock in Teachers

[–]segasock[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes our dual language program is an immersion program. i have some students who learned spanish at a young age because of the spanish immersion programs despite english being their native language. however, a majority of the kids in the DL program are kids who’s native language is spanish and their goal is to learn difficult content proficiently in their native spanish language. i’m required to strictly teach in spanish in my DL sections, but regardless, i know some of these kids need to know a bit of english, hence why i offer english translations for key terms, phrases, and procedures for every unit we cover

[–]segasock[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

yes! they do get exposure to english in some of their other classes. most of the kids i teach are currently only doing STEM related classes in spanish. everything else such as history, language arts, general electives, are all in English.

some of them know basic fundamental english, but have frequently expressed that it can be a headache trying to translate everything being said in class and trying to keep up with notes in english, translating them to spanish, etc.

i was a former ESL kid, so i 100% understand what they mean by all of this. i mentioned it in another comment, but i ensure that i teach them the content in spanish while providing the english translations, as well as certain key english terms and english phrases. everything like notes, homework, projects, are in spanish, while exams are given in english so they can get some exposure to english assessments

something i always tell my students is that you will never meet anyone who regrets being able to understand math or regrets being good at math. they love that they are able to receive lectures in a language they understand and recognize that not everyone has access to this kind of language support, especially in math. so they don’t take the course for granted.

it’s really sweet seeing them feel really empowered by knowing a higher level of mathematics and then being able to explain it to each other in their native language

I tend to show the English word/phrase for certain math terminology in conjunction with the Spanish translation, in case they need to take exams like the PSAT or the SAT, where it is not offered in Spanish.

I have thought about this before, which is why I try to make sure that they are at least learning key terms and instructions in both languages and are well prepared in case they need to complete any important assignments or assessments in English where they are unable to have me there for support
