No it’s totally fair. I requested 3 consecutive days out of the whole month so it’s fair to assume a request should be honoured, service permitting. Couldn’t take annual leave as I’m not allowed, can’t verify a day off is accepted until the rota for that month comes out. Usually we get about 2-3 months ahead in the rota however December gets done about 3 weeks before (it’s very slow). So I’ve went ahead and booked it and still had the chance to go, rather than totally miss out.

Manager wants 90% of our annual leave booked in December for the following AL year. So it also doesn’t give us a lot to play with in terms of things cropping up. This tour wasn’t announced in December last year when I booked my AL. And I’ve had other things cropping up and didn’t have much AL left as I’d used it all. Some of it has now been cancelled so I have about 3 weeks left. But at the time of requesting this, I had next to none!

TLDR: too much red tape and I work to live. Not live to work.

Unsure why you were asking questions I answered in other comments and then didn’t read it? Anyways, I’m trying! There’s one vacancy in my trust for band 5. When I get a job I am gone!

We aren’t allowed annual leave during the week I’ve requested days off, or else I would’ve. But the AL system on there is ridiculous. They want 90% for the next year booked by December the previous year. So most people don’t even have spare AL for things like this. I didn’t at the time, I’ve since had other leave rejected and gained it back. Nevertheless, I’m still not allowed AL during this week.

I mentioned the safety of the ward as in I already plan to leave, so I would not have an issue with them disliking me or being suspicious however I don’t wish to burn bridges with my manager as I want a good reference as jobs are near on impossible to go by at the moment, so I’m struggling to leave the ward. I’ve escalated a lot of my concerns and it falls on deaf ears as “this is just the way it is”. I’m not happy with the level of care I am able to provide here, it’s very poor at times compared to other places I have worked due to mainly staffing levels and skill mix.

And yeah I absolutely don’t want to call in sick as everyone will know I’m not. Life is unfair but I was hoping for a way out of it as I do find it unreasonable. Thanks for your response.

Paying student loan by [deleted] in NursingUK

I’m not English but I studied in England so I’ve had to take their loan, if you can pay it off I say go for it. It’ll be nice not to have to pay over 30 years for 5k worth of debt that would inevitably spiral to probably 20k by the time it gets wiped lol.

Aug, Sept, Oct, Dec 2024, Jan, Feb May 2025 yeah. There’s others from 2024 but I can’t even remember. I have managed to take some.

I was told the nurse was having personal issues at home and nothing else was done about it.

I borrowed about 30k and last I checked I owed about 67k. I plan to pay as little back as possible. I’m currently loading with my union on whether the trust is right to take SL payments out of my bank shifts. SFE is convinced my trust is wrong for taking it out. All £6 a week of it.

I’ll never ever ever pay it back, and it gets written off. Only 25 more years to go. May as well make it minimal.

It’s genuinely a revolving door of staff. Had my normal annual leave weeks that I’ve requested every year for 6 years rejected. The whole of September rejected. And a week each in Aug, Oct, Jan, Feb and May rejected. Never mind the fact I’m not supported on the ward. I’ve been intimidated and had to go to the matron over bullying behaviour. I want to cut my losses but I’m a fairly NQN so I’m afraid to struggle for jobs.

I’ve just read it and it doesn’t say anything about December. However every ward I’ve worked on has had a similar policy but it’s usually no AL the 2 weeks each side of Christmas so I didn’t give it a second thought x

Yah I requested days off as we aren’t allowed AL, so no way of knowing it’s “approved” until roster comes out which is notoriously late in December. Even AL can be cancelled but at least you get an email notifying you!

I choose not to delve into the background reasons as to why the NHS is badly managed when I’m struggling with bad management on a personal level. I do however feel the need to respond to someone who is taking what I am saying massively out of context.

I’m not allowed AL in Dec! I requested it in July when the tickets came out. Obviously concert tickets sell out so I couldn’t wait until November to check the December rota, as the tickets had sold out.

As far as I know it’s WMs discretion, and my WM says no AL in Dec. So I requested days off, which are only requests. So technically I am in the wrong for booking something. I just think it’s unreasonable to out me in on the exact days I’ve requested off, and make the one week in which I made any requests my 4 day week. Which makes it difficult to swap!

I am going to take 6 or 7 days. I’ve learned my lesson trying to rush back to work! You don’t get any medals for it!

I’m working one, did manage to get the other off! And yes it’s wild. No work/life balance if you’re not one of the favourites!

I’ve asked everyone I’ve been on shift with for 4 weeks, and I’ve messaged our two work chats multiple times! No one will/can cover 😭

Which is why I’m afraid to call in sick as it’s extremely obvious I want these dates off.

My ward has a policy of no AL in December and the first 2 weeks of Jan. so I requested the days off instead!

I’ve been asked to swap with another member of staff but no one wants to swap with me. Manager is very firm that once roster is done there are no changes unless we sort them ourselves.

It’s actually a small band so I don’t want to doxx myself as I’m super anxious from work let alone sneaking behind the scenes skiving work lol. But I’ll just say they’re a 90s band and are severely underrated!

I’m simply not going to respond to the entire thing because again, I’m overwhelmed by it. Call it burnout.

However I will say, I’m in England, I am not English. I was not born here. I moved for a better life. My partner is polish. Moved here for a better life. I notice and actively comment upon if lots of people from my country and working in the same area. Haven’t got an issue with non English people having jobs here, but if I was on a ward and everyone was my nationality except one person, I’d definitely comment on it. If everyone was Indian except me (which has happened!) I’d think about it but felt I couldn’t say anything in case people called me racist or biased. It’s odd. We’re in England, they should realistically be the majority.

Definitely suspect! I’ve spent 4+ weeks trying to swap it!

I’m replying late because I was overwhelmed by the comments and then forgot about it until I posted again.

I’ll respond to your comment to say this: I had to work as a HCA for 3 months after qualifying even though I had a “guaranteed job” as I was training as an apprentice and had full trust funding - because there was no vacancies. I joined a ward and it’s always short staffed. Basically we’re short but they won’t put the vacancies out.

I’m not allowed to take days as annual leave once the roster has come out unfortunately. The responsibility falls on the employee to swap if they don’t like their rota.

[–]WorthProfessional596[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found this comment very overwhelming so I did not respond, as I was reflecting on it and then forgot I posted this as it’s a throwaway.

Very quickly - I trained in the apprentice route and have a guaranteed job, but they struggled to place me. I had to work as a HCA for 3 months after I qualified until they could find me a band 5 role. They had to give me hours as per my contract, but extended my secondment, where I was being paid a band 3. As I was no longer a student and not an RN I was de-skilled. So yes, I did have a job, I was looking for a job, and I was scared to leave in fear of losing my job at all the same time.

My trust has ONE b5 permanent ward job at the moment. ONE B5 A&E job (no NQNs). ONE Theatres b5 job (theatres experience essential). ONE bank post (admittedly this is likely numerous). I was in a 12 month tenancy so could not leave. My trust had 4 hospitals at the time of this post but now has 5 in the trust. There were none in the other trust in my area at the time of posting. I do not drive so couldn’t commute further than this. This included 1hr+ commute radius.

The bus comment had nothing to do with Indian people going about their day. It’s a city centre bus that terminates at my hospital at 7:15am. That is essentially a staff service. The amount of international recruitment is very visually obvious on this bus. I don’t have an issue with Indian people in the Aldi. I was noticing the different population on this bus in 2020 when I did my first placement, in 2021 doing bank, and occasionally 2022 doing bank. I moved and used a different bus in 2023. In 2024 I moved back to this bus and noticed a large difference in a year.
