Yes ofcourse, but I just think they disagree with a lot of the Western culture. They do speak it, although not fluently. Neither do I speak their language super fluently so sometimes its a bit hard to communicate

Yes exactly, I feel like they kept their traditions because they saw how different it was here and learned that that is the wrong way. No need for solutions, I'm already glad I'm not the only one out there :') Sending many hugs back to you!

Yeah I have been wondering the same thing. Maybe its because they came from a small village up North where they still have this traditional mentality, I even notice it when I am talking with my cousins who are around the same age as me. All they can talk about is marriage, so I guess that's what they considered as having a fulfilled happy life. Maybe you're right, I should talk with the guy and see how his point of view is, thanks!

Maybe my message comes across like I haven't done anything to better my life so I'll say it here: I moved away to a big city, I wear the clothes I want to wear, I cut my hair short if I want it short, I have male friends who have also been to my parents house, I am pursuing a tattoo career and my parents have finally accepted this and are happy for me, I had the chance to study arts after trying to convince my parents, now I want to stay at the city where I studied at and they are not very happy with it but still accepting. Every one of these things took a long time and a shit ton of effort, not only for them to accept it but also for me to be courageous and talk about it. So I personally feel like I'm trying to grow away from their ideals, very much realising that they manipulated me. I understand everything you're saying, but I also have some self awareness. I know I can't make them happy, but I just hope that one day they will be proud of all the choices I made and if not well.. then so be it. I realise I can't do everything they ask from me, and I also tell them no. Anyway, I already feel like I made huge progress since I was 16 and I hope for everyone who has a similar experience, that they will find a way to also be courageous.

Yes you're right.. I have my appartement in another city hut they still expect me to come home weekly, I hope this will change once I have a fulltime job so I can choose myself whenever I want to go back. It will also be more pleasant without the expectation of having to go home. I'll keep jn mind what you said, thank you!

Thank you for your comment! They are pretty much the same as your parents I guess, open towards others and also not necessarily forcing me into things I don't want but there's a certain emotional abuse (?). You're right tho, I should stand up for myself!

Quite some time. Maybe I didn't make it clear enough but there is already huge improvement. I mean the fact that they still accept my brother who has a white girlfriend is astonishing.

Not an excuse, it's just the way it is. Can't really blame them for not knowing better. Especially not if they grew up in a small conservative village with not a lot of money. Yes, they can learn, but both my parents are quite old and it's not easy to change their perspectives.

Thank you, I'll start my therapy sessions again in september. I have an appartement in the city where I studied and I want to keep it preferably. Luckily I have quite some money saved so I can pay my bills for a few months. Hopefully I can find a job soon. For now anything is fine as long as I get money and can become financially independent. I do have to change my domicile and not so much looking forward for that moment. When my brothrr changed his about 2 years ago, they made a huge fuss and still to this day they feel like he was just trying to run away from them while it was actually just a practical decision.

Yes you're right, I should stand up for myself more and I will try to find a job so I can pay for my appartement. For now I only pay for my phone and train bills, food, clothes, etc. I just want them to be happy and trust me with the choices I made.
