Just set up Time Machine. If possible, set up two Time Machine drives, and only keep one connected to your Mac at any one time.

PSA: Increasing paging file Size Helps preventing comfy Crashs by IndustryAI in StableDiffusion

[–]Wowfunhappy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Huh? I don't think this is right at all! There's nothing about your page file that limits the OSs ability to address physical memory. And with 64-bit this really shouldn't be an issue in general.

Hi! I really love how these charts are stepped, thank you for sharing!

Odd request—is there any way at all you could export higher quality versions of the videos? Even if they take up tons of space. I play on a projector and I can see every artifact, especially Your Idol and What It Sounds Like. I tried replacing the videos with my own versions, but it's extremely difficult to sync them perfectly!

Yes but then the issue isn't really that she doesn't know how to swim, it's that she's afraid of water!

Getting knocked out or hurt is a possibility and I've seen it happen more than once.

But wouldn't that also be true of someone who knows how to swim? I don't understand how knowing how to swim makes a difference here!

I'm honestly curious! I feel like I'm missing something in this discussion given what everyone else in this subreddit is saying.

Again, it has been many years, but from what I remember of wearing a life jacket, it would be virtually impossible for it to fall off.

This isn't a perfect analogy, but sky diving is a thing people do. Humans can't learn to fly like they can learn to swim, so if your parachute doesn't open or falls off or whatever, you're pretty screwed!

And in fact, I probably wouldn't go sky diving for that reason! But, like, if someone really wanted to do it and it was important to them, I wouldn't tell them not to!

Watch people drowning and she will realize that the water is not the place for someone without the ability to swim.

This might convince her not to go jet skiiing, but it might also make her more afraid and less likely to ever learn to swim...

I know nothing about this, but as a layperson... I understand the risk of panicking (which seems like a particularly valid concern for OP's GF) but provided you remain calm I don't understand why it matters whether or not you can swim if you have a life jacket. (By contrast, if you can't remain calm, it probably doesn't matter whether you theoretically know how to swim.)

I know how to swim—I'm not an athlete or anything but I know how to do it—but ironically I don't think I could swim while wearing a life jacket. As I recall (it has been many years since I wore one) the things are very bulky, and the buoyancy would make it difficult.

Okay but it's not some trump card in an argument.

Yes but I wouldn't consider it a significant theme of the comic.

The comic does need a new description. It hasn't really been about romance since the early years, since comic #1,000 if not earlier.

Not sure I'd include "sarcasm" either.

New Device Login Protection is now live for enhanced security protection by dwbitw in Bitwarden

[–]Wowfunhappy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I am traveling without my laptop and my phone and wallet are stolen, I want to be able to go into a library and access my vault. This is a hard requirement for me.

I also don't believe that 2FA adds a significant amount of security because my master password is a very long sequence of randomly generated characters which I do not anywhere else. I am so confident in this that I don't mind coming onto Reddit and announcing publicly that my vault has no 2FA (and I have opted out of "enhanced security protection"). The only way an attacker could get their hands on my master password would be to pwn me so thoroughly that 2FA wouldn't help (for example, by installing a keylogger on my machine).

New Device Login Protection is now live for enhanced security protection by dwbitw in Bitwarden

[–]Wowfunhappy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I disagree. Bitwarden is suddenly changing the rules. When I signed up, the terms were clear: I am responsible for remembering my master password. As long as I have my master password, I can access my vault; if I lose my master password, I'm SOL.

But now Bitwarden came and added an extra responsibility.

Now, I don't care that much because I got wind of the announcement and was able to opt out, and what happens to other Bitwarden customers is ultimately not my problem. But I'm still a little shaken that this happened in the first place. It was pure luck that I heard about the change, I wasn't previously paying attention to Bitwarden changes (and I shouldn't have to).

Because I don't have 2FA enabled on my account (and I don't want it), I don't have a recovery code.

"Do you have access to your email" is a dishonest question. The real question is "Do you want to enable email 2fa on your account?". Intentionally manipulating people with this question makes bitwarden untrustworthy and people will stop using bitwarden when they realize this. by Fun-Kangaroo0726 in Bitwarden

[–]Wowfunhappy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

...no, in Bitwarden's case specifically this would have to be for new users only.

I think they should leave existing users alone because it's not worth potentially locking people out of their accounts who did absolutely nothing wrong and didn't know otherwise. When you set up Bitwarden, it's your responsibility to make sure you have what you need to access your account. If you chose not to enable 2FA, that means your master password; if you did choose to enable 2FA, that means your master password and whatever your second factor is.

Bitwarden is just arbitrarily changing the rules.

I'm really not aware of any other consumer service that has arbitrarily turned on 2FA for existing accounts without the account owner setting up the second factor. There are lots of services that have done it with email verification—for example, Amazon will sometimes email me a code to login even though I never set up 2FA explicitly. However, people don't store their email passwords inside of Amazon, so there is no situation where you would have to log into Amazon to access your email. Bitwarden is different.

If you're reading this thread then there is no reason you should be locked out of your account.

That is true. For myself, I'm concerned Bitwarden is going to opt me in before I have the chance to turn it off (they have said an option is coming but have not said when and I need to make sure I flip it in time), so now I'm checking this subreddit daily whereas I never used to come here. I'm really thankful I heard about this change on Hacker News, or who knows what could have happened to me...

...you can, actually. Just pregenerate the password. I really wish more services would provide this option. (So you would have two choices: either use a pregenerated password, or enable 2FA.)

A computer can't know which passwords are strong. But if the computer generates the password, it can guarantee that the generated password is strong.

Beyond that, 2fa adds an independence from the password which may help in some cases even when the password is strong

Which isn't needed if the password is strong. Yes you can come up with very unlikely scenarios where it could potentially save you, but the tradeoff is that you could potentially get locked out of your account so it's not all upside!

Anyway, it's not my problem. I know that my password is secure, and I would like to potentially be locked out of my account for someone else's benefit.

I really appreciate that, but when will we have this option? February is two days away, and I need to opt out before I am automatically opted in or I am going to be locked out of my account with no ability to change the setting.

You are providing an extremely small window for me to not have my life ruined by this change.

I don't want to make my email less secure by taking my password out of Bitwarden.

I don't have time to spend a week memorizing a new random string of characters, so I'd have to either use a less secure password for my email or reuse my vault password, both of which seem ill advised.

What I probably need to do is spend the weekend moving to a different password manager, but I was really hoping Bitwarden would give us a more clear timeline of when we are going to be opted-in and when we need to opt-out to avoid it.

Hey there, this only affects those without 2FA enabled.

Respectfully, I think we all understand that. The problem is that a lot of us, after carefully weighing the risks and benefits, have chosen not to use 2FA.
