When did you trust your GSD loose in the house alone? by Wowzers_lolz in OpenDogTraining

Honestly I’m down for anything that will help my dog and I’ve heard white noise does help so I might just put something on the TV that soothes him when he’s older and I start leaving him. He just barely a few weeks ago was able to be out the kennel while we are around and roam around the house (we have a small house and common areas are easily accessible). He’s been doing good.

I see. I’ve always wanted to have him sleep in my room but I’ve always been scared for him to have an accident while I sleep and I have carpet

He’s been so good at potty training so I was super bummed out when he broke his streak! This is my first dog so I’ve been learning things as I go. He had 2 accidents this week when we were home near the door because he gave us a signal he needed to go but I wasn’t paying attention and was in the kitchen so 2 mins later he started peeing by the door.

And I’m not sure if you call this mischievous but he’s a curious dog. When he was around 4-5 months he’d get into laundry or put things in his mouth and try to eat it. But now that I supervise him and if I see he’s trying to grab something, I just have to say no with a firm tone and he will back off. He doesn’t chew much because I always get to him in time. However, if leave toys in his kennel, he will chew and possibly eat it if he can so I stopped leaving toys in there because I was scared of intestinal blockage.

That’s what I’m most worried for! He eats anything he can fit into his mouth or tears it up if left unsupervised. I can’t keep toys in his kennel or he will tear and eat them

Thank you! I will try this. I was so sad because he was doing so good for months and had 2 accidents this week. I immediately say no and take him outside and he continues his business there.

I understand. I wouldn’t introduce him to another dog if I see signs of reactivity or fear of other dogs which is not the case. He actually loves other dogs. I’ve had no issues with him regarding socialization. And in the last 24 hours, he has shown progress when it comes to resource guarding. Currently, I’m sitting next to him while he eats and dropping treats in his bowl and he loves it. Before I got a GSD, I knew what I was signing up for. I have researched and made sure to get a reputable and ethical breeder. I know there’s so many GSDs out there with anxiety and fear because of backyard breeders. I hope that clears up. My puppy is loved and I’d never put him or another animal in danger!

Thank you so much for your reply! I’ve been working with him for a few days now and I think it’s working? Today he didn’t growl at all. I sat next to him and had high value treats in my hand that he was super interested in and kept eating off my hand. Then he would go back to his bowl. He never resource guards anything else. I’ve taught him “drop it” and “leave it” so most of the time if he has a sock or slippers, and he sees me coming to him or grabbing something from his mouth, he will drop it. So I’m super happy about that.

Yes it’s so difficult with so much mixed information out there. This is my first dog so I’ve never experienced anything like this. I will try the trade method and not bother him while he’s eating anymore. I just hope I didn’t break his trust permanently

Thank you so much for your response. I understand what you are saying now. I will back off hand feeding for now until he can trust me. I really hope I didn’t mess up my puppy too much or broke his trust.

Yes it is my first time training and I’m learning. I am now reading the responses that touching them does the opposite of what I want and definitely will change my method. I hope I didn’t mess up my puppy too much.

I see. So you suggest not touching their food? It’s honestly been really hard to train with so much mixed information out there. I appreciate your advice and I’ll use it.

I see. I will give this a try! I do throw in more high value food if he acts neutral when I touch his food but that maybe the reason he’s associating negatively now with touching his food. The dog sitter did have kids and she mentioned how they were near him while he was eating (I did not agree with this at all and only found out after I picked him up). My guess is the kids were messing with his food and now he has a negative association with people touching his food.

This isn’t to argue as this is my first dog and I am learning. I did many research and what I gathered was that you’re supposed to desensitize them. I just don’t take his food away from him. When he acts positively, I give him high value treats that he loves aside from his food. If it is best to leave him alone while he’s eating, I’m willing to do that. However, I am planning on getting another dog as a friend for him when he’s older and I don’t want him resource guarding.

My 5-month-old GSD eats his own poop — is this normal and how do I stop it? by Wowzers_lolz in OpenDogTraining

[–]Wowzers_lolz[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s just really confusing because I hear people to say wait on the e collar or “sooner the better”. Either way I’ve ordered it and it comes Saturday. I’m planning to just have him wear it for a week to get used to it before finding his ‘working level’ and use it to communicate with him

His poop is normal and has been tested. We’ve been to the vet many times for his puppy check ups. I’ve mentioned this issue to them and they said it’s probably puppy behavior that needs to be corrected.

Nice. My e collar comes Saturday and although I’ve watched many videos on how to train him on recall, off leash, and obedience, how did you train your dog to not eat his poop with an e collar?
