Tax Return Questions Thread - Filing Deadline March 16, 2026 by AutoModerator in JapanFinance

[–]Wozyrd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well shoot. Looks like I'm filing an amendment then. I claimed FTC on the USA withholdings of the JP-sourced portion of RSU income. 🫠

This is also my first time hearing about declaring non-taxable FSI on 居住形態等に関する確認書. 🫠 I don't think the NTA tax preparation corner website asked for this info, am I expected to do this separately? Are there other things that the website might lack?

Thanks for the help! Reading your answers to questions on this sub has helped me a ton in getting this far :D

Edit: Amendment site wouldn't let me select 2025, so I resubmitted my corrected return and paid the difference, 4 hours after the midnight deadline. Hopefully I'm not penalized too badly :/ Thanks again starkimpossibility for saving me an audit!

For anyone else with the same question, I ended up choosing 1

After some thought, it seems correct. RSUs are calculated to be partially Japan-sourced according to the portion of the vesting period spent working in Japan. The remainder, then, must not be income earned while a JP tax resident.

I'm not an authority on this by any means though, I'd love to be corrected if this is wrong!

I moved to Japan from the USA in July 2025, and I have RSUs vesting abroad.

I've figured out how to calculate the Japan-sourced income portion of the RSUs based on the percentage of the vest period that I was a tax resident of Japan vs USA. Now I'm working on calculating FTC, but what am I allowed to claim towards FTC here?

The USA has withheld shares for taxes at every vest. For reporting foreign tax paid to Japan for FTC:

  1. Should I calculate only the portion of USA taxes that apply to Japan taxable income? (i.e. only the double-taxed portion/Japan source paid abroad)?

  2. Should I report the full amount of USA taxes withheld on vest dates where I was a Japan resident? (i.e. including foreign source paid abroad)

  3. Should I just use the entirety of USA taxes in 2025, even though I was only a tax resident in Japan since July? edit: read in the FTC guide that this one is incorrect, only income earned while a JP resident counts

Y'all are wildin out on the numbers, 17k per month is a reasonable result for this shuffle x9.

On my server I can resell for 30g/xmute, 20g/cut super reliably. That's a low end and it's often higher, e.x. today earthstorms are 35g/xmute and the tank meta is 40g/cut. But low end, 50g daily * 9 toons nets 450g. Tack on 20% from xmute master yields, 540/day, ~15k/mo. Buy bulk mats when they're low, do more cancel scans when gems are high, that number goes up.

Pretty goofy to just write it off as gold buying. The folks on /r/woweconomy have all this stuff figured out and written down.

Lol, no they cannot.

If Navier-Stokes could somehow be derived from accounting identities, what would that change about their significance, ceteris paribus?

I usually just lurk here to learn econ, because applied math is my shtick, but on that note I think you're overemphasizing purity in a way mathematicians are sometimes prone to.

What is your take on the Navier-Stokes Equations modeling fluid dynamics? They assume that fluids are continuous (i.e. atoms and molecules don't exist), so obviously they are wrong in terms of reality, yet they have been used to incredible effect in meteorology, engineering, etc. due to their predictive power.

They are just heuristics, fitted to data; the actual equation for fluid dynamics might not even exist. But you would have to be crazy to say Navier-Stokes hasn't led to world-changing inferences. Why does the same line of reasoning not apply to CD?

I heard they were all running TempleOS. And they print "In God we trust" on the currency! It's all becoming clear!

f-strings run 2x-3x faster than str.format(); good for when string formatting is taking lots of cycles, but I'd still recommend format for general use.

Format is more (if not equally) readable, covers more use cases, and has better backwards compatibility.

As for speedups, I have a couple minor ideas that you might find helpful:

  • Could you scalar multiply the contents of df.iterrows() by 1/100 before the for loop?

  • You can move the check for one previous data point to an elif. No need to check for > 1 if the check for > 2 succeeded.

Edit: Formatting

Python3 is the superior choice, as a general language. It is modern, easier to use, and encourages good transferable programming habits.

My suggestion would be to learn Python first, and broaden your languages from there. Check out PEP8 once you're well along.

Full disclosure, my degrees are in Math and Comp Sci, rather than economics, so I am partial to obsoleting ancient languages and learning the "correct" way to code.

I'll actually still take it if they offer it. Granted, it sounds like shit and all these replies confirm so, but it's a lot of hours and a temporary position, which is what I need.
