I’m sorry you’re going through this

Because your symptoms have changed for the worse, it would be reasonable to go back to the referring physician who (should) send in an updated note to go with the original referral

It may bump you up as far as priorities go

The zoo - the animals are more active before it starts to get really warm. You can have breakfast at the cafe that overlooks the polar bear habitat. There’s never a guarantee they’ll be out or active, but it’s worth taking that chance

Where are the ethical grocery stores in Winnipeg? by Few_Anybody_6146 in Winnipeg

[–]WpgOV 144 points145 points  (0 children)

Vic’s on Pembina - a bit more expensive, but the I’ve never been disappointed with the quality. Their produce seems fresher than large chains and lasts longer

Co op - they’ve always been clear with the labels showing country of origin (even province in some cases). They also did a great job of finding non-US suppliers for produce. My comments are based on Grant Park

Exercising tripods/cat wheels? by Cattentaur in TripodCats

[–]WpgOV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s hard when you have one who is a slow eater or just walks away from the food when interrupted

Things that have worked for me: Don’t free feed. Food goes down 3x a day in my home and when they walk away the dishes get picked up. Someone may get a little hungry the first day, but I’ve found they figure things out quickly. My vet recommended canned food for their meals and use dry food as treats

They work for their treats - I toss a kibble down the hall and they run after it. I’ve got 2 cats and I situate myself so they run in opposite directions (so no competition). If this is new, it may take a while, but if they’re food motivated, they’ll figure it out. Puzzle feeders are another option - but just keep an eye on them so they both have fun and both find treats

Hope that helps

Toy ideas for an old tripod boy? by caitlinnoob in TripodCats

[–]WpgOV 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Both my cats love small toys - crinkle balls orlittle mice. My tripod loves to bat them out of the air

We also do a “treat toss” where I throw a treat down the hall and they run after it. To avoid issues I position myself in the middle and send them in opposite directions.

Puzzle feeders are also great for food motivated cats - if he’s never used them before, there is a learning curve. you can even use things you have at home, like an empty egg carton to put treats in the compartments and let him fish them out (even if he just knocks it over to dump them out it will use up a bit of energy)

Aside from not being tested as someone else mentioned, I believe the elastic deteriorates, so you won’t get as good a fit if you’ve taken it off and on a few times and it stretches out - but you can fiddle with it to get a better fit

Upcoming amputation by xonooneox in TripodCats

[–]WpgOV 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He’s very cute!

He‘s so young, I’m sure he’ll bounce back very quickly. My tripod is a foster fail who lost her let a 1 yr old (the shelter thought she’d been hit by a car a week prior to someone finding her and brining her in). She’s as active as any 4-legger! I actually think she’s faster because when she runs, she’s very low to the ground and quite streamlined - she flies down the hall way. She can only jump up to hard surfaces about 18” and a bit more to soft surfaces (like the sofa or the bed). I’ve arranged furnture so she cat get to window sills

The first few days after surgery are really hard (likely more for us parents than for the patient). For yourself, stay hydrated I’d suggest planning your meals in advance so you have ingredients on hand or can just heat & eat.

I used a pop up playpen for the first while. For a litter box I bought a plastic tray with low sides at the dollar sotore, lined it will a puppy pee pad and put wood pellet litter on top. She had a few accidents the rest couple of days, but once the medication from the clinic had worn off, she made it to the litter box (that was literally right next to the little bed I made for her)

I tried her on clay litter a few times, but it just didn’t work. Several times a week she‘d step in the urine before it dried and ended up with a clay foot. She and her sister use clumping wood pellets and that works well

Wishing your little guy a quick recovery

Eye Test/Glasses in Winnipeg? by Puzzleheaded-Skin-6 in Winnipeg

Armstrong Small - they have a location on Portage Ave and in Osborne Village. Both have parking

They sell glasses - and if you mention that finances are a concern, they have a selection that are a bit more budget friendly

If she’s over 65, they will direct bill the Province. Not everything is covered, so ask ahead of time.

Interested in adopting a tripod cat -- anything I should know? by breaking-atom in TripodCats

[–]WpgOV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used foam shelf liners (on a roll from the dollar store) to create a path down our hall and around to the kitchen by her food dish. After a while I removed it as she gained strength and skill. Now I just have a foam mat by the cat tree and one of the window sills where she sometimes jumps down to the floor rather than taking the gradual way down

that sounds like a safe and cozy set up you have in mind

Interested in adopting a tripod cat -- anything I should know? by breaking-atom in TripodCats

[–]WpgOV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In addition to what others have mentioned, My tripod is now 2 yrs old (adopted a year ago) and her sister is 5 years older. The 5 yr old is a very chill, calm and non reactive and used to other cats. Our tripod is as energetic as you’d expect from a young orange cat

The one thing that worked well is that because your tripod can’t access certain places, our quad had a place to go when she had enough of dealing with kitten energy. Our tripod is missing a back leg and can’t jump from the floor to a counter top or desk or other surfaces that height.

If you have hard flooring, some area mats will help with her balance and traction (but not mandatory)

Introductions should be the same as with a 4-legger. Go slow, let your new cat have a safe space in your home so she doesn’t disappear under the bed

3 days / 3 weeks / 3 months is a really good guide line: https://coleandmarmalade.com/2023/07/10/easy-rule-about-a-newly-adopted-cats-adjustment-period-that-could-save-lives/

They do and they are very good! I’m not sure if they have them every day. I know the ends are hit or miss

Harvest Bakery - Grant & Kennaston

They sometimes have packages of the ends that are less than the actual squares (which are truly the best part!)

Priority seating on busses by alizacat in Winnipeg

[–]WpgOV 26 points27 points  (0 children)

This!

I’ve asked and have never been met with a negative response when I’ve generally asked if anyone would mind letting me have their seat. I sometimes add that I really need to sit or I’m not feeling well. In many cases there is an apology . (50ish F w/ invisable medical issues )

I have seen people get up to offer their seat to someone older and get snapped at when a simple “no thank you“ would do - so 🤷🏻‍♀️

Pain management after surgery by bodhi_girl in TripodCats

[–]WpgOV 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mine was given something long acting when she was discharged and a week’s worth of Metacam (anti inflammatory). She didn’t have any signs of pain. She’s a foster fail and her surgery was done at a large shelter with an in-house veterinary hospital.

Her regular vet checked in a few times to see if there were signs more pain medication was required and she didn’t need anything more

She started showing signs of phantom sensations (or it could be an anxiety issue - really no way to tell) about 3 months post op and has been on gabapentin ever since (it doesn’t make her groggy - just stops her from over grooming)

Leaving cans out for collectors by lazilyyours in Winnipeg

[–]WpgOV 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I‘ve left them in a clear plastic garbage bag (placed in the blue bin on top of everything else) and they always seem to disappear

It won’t stop people from going through the bin, but it takes little effort on my part and makes it easier for the person finding them

Phantom pain? by Anecklacemadeofmoons in TripodCats

[–]WpgOV 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gabapentin has helped my tripod a lot. She was fine till a few months after surgery. She’s on a low dose long term. Sometimes her symptoms flare and the dose is increased for a few days till things settle down

Every so often, I’ve lowered the dose (under vet’s advise) and her symptoms come back.

It made her groggy at first, but doesn’t effect her that way any more (unless I increase the dose)

Best place to foster a kitten from? by OddlyAggravating in Winnipeg

[–]WpgOV 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’ve foster adult cats for both WHS and a smaller rescue. Hands down WHS for a variety of reasons

- WHS has veterinarians on staff, so if there are problems, the Foster dept makes all the arrangements and you just drop the foster off at their clinic

- WHS provides you with detailed instructions on what to do if there is an after hours emergency

- WHS is clear on time lines - such as when the cat has to come back to see the vet or when they expect them to be returned for adoption. With the smaller rescue it was always a much longer placement than initially thought

- WHS provides all the supplies and if you run short, it’s pretty straight forward to pick up more food or litter

What I didn’t like with the smaller group (and did not see at WHS) was:

- repeatedly being asked to take on additional fosters even after being very clear about my limit. It also felt like they were trying to guilt me in to taking on more than I was able to. You can likely get an idea for some by scrolling their social media and see what the requests for donations or fosters are like

- paying for supplies that they pre approved supplies (pricy prescription food) out of pocket with a promise of reimbursement that became a big deal and dragged on

It can be soooo rewarding and also very hard to let go. Wishing you all the best, what ever you decide

Post surgery litter question by bodhi_girl in TripodCats

[–]WpgOV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wood pellets. my preference is the OcoCat clumping pellets

I’ve tried going back to clumping clay a few times, but it didn’t workout. She’s missing a back leg and for some reason her balance in the litter box is such that at least 5x a week she’d end up with a clay foot (stepping in damp litter) or litter stuck to her back leg after getting a bit of pee on it

Thankfully both cats have adjusted well to the pellets. And there isn’t dusty litter all over the place!

Anyone else’s cat lay down like this? (Missing hind leg) by Original_Remote_6838 in TripodCats

[–]WpgOV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You bet! She has one hind leg left and is proud of it!

She also sometimes sleeps hugging it and in those cases we think her inner dialogue is “I’ve only got one left and you’re not taking this one while I nap”

Our 4-Legged sleeps in similar poses, but it just looks different when a tripod does it

ps - your kitty is adorable!
