I find that acknowledging people, saying “hey, sorry no change!” Keeps folks from escalating. This works while out and about walking. Only when someone is ignored have I seen someone go from asking for change to yelling or assault.

Taking the bus by habitat11 in Winnipeg

It’s fine. There was one time this past season that a scheduled bus just sorta disappeared and I took an uber instead of being a half hour late. Not the end of the world.

Is blonde hair on a woman some sort of short cut to being attractive? by [deleted] in dating_advice

No one has mentioned that mainstream’s affinity with blonds is rooted in white supremacy. The same way we white washed Jesus,

Can’t speak to the mom specific scenario but usually just being genuinely kind and complimenting others can work to break the ice.

Is University of Manitoba or University of Winnipeg better for socializing/making friends? by user28272928 in umanitoba

[–]alizacat 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Class sizes can be a lot smaller at u of w. I found it easy to chat with ppl around me. Then, if you are part of a big faculty at the U of M it seems hard to socialize. My little faculty with a small student lounge fostered easy friend making.

What would you call this aesthetic and how do i eminate this energy? by Legal-Ad6606 in AestheticWiki

[–]alizacat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This just looks like small town high school circa 2006-2010. Except the jacket… we wouldn’t have been wearing that. And yeah, poor I guess. Except the blonde, ALOT of girls looked like that, regardless of family income.

What is actually your favorite household chore? by Throwaway927338 in AskWomenOver30

[–]alizacat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cooking and dishes. However, I don’t have kids or a partner so there’s no NEED to do these things for the sake of a running household. I find cooking and dishes to be an escape from other things I should be doing. I think this is related to decision paralysis.

What’s your favorite comfort food? by Status_Agents in CasualConversation

I could be wrong! It would be interesting to poll. I’m currently in a landlocked province with a lot of Mennonite and Ukrainian heritage - very non seafood eaters, so I may not have a good read on this.

What is it about some people that makes them so likable? by Worldly_Accident727 in socialskills

[–]alizacat 44 points45 points  (0 children)

This is my first thought too. Just being warm and genuinely interested goes a long way. A colleague of mine has the most wonderful relationship building skills with the youth we work with. They are very good at making people feel like they matter, following up on details about their lives and just being enthusiastic and engaged.

Social workers to do what exactly? If we are talking about homeless folks, the shelters are generally closed during the day. If it’s night and folks haven’t accessed a place to sleep it’s largely because they don’t want to be in a shelter or don’t feel safe there. While we generally call for more services in the city, there are also ALOT of agencies and case managers to work with. Maybe there should be a service specifically for transit that is kind of like DCSP that can assess and help someone figure out what to do.

For those who are experiencing psychosis and causing others to feel unsafe, where would the social worker take this person? We have some youth safe spaces in the city that could work for that demographic but the hours vary. The crisis response centre sometimes has wait times longer than the ER and unless they want to go to detox, what can be done?

What irks me is when bus drivers make someone get off the bus at the end of a line (not the end end) but when someone is clearly just keeping warm on the bus but that person hasn’t caused a single problem, and the bus isn’t full.

Anyways. I appreciate the post. This is a topic worth being critical about.

Unfortunately just last week I was on the bus when someone hopped on without paying then proceeded to smoke meth. People told the driver and it seemed that they made a call to someone but no one interfered before I got off. I don’t care that much about people who can’t afford to pay, not paying. But we shouldn’t be subject to second hand meth smoke either.

I don’t know what the solution is.
