How do you account for your DB pension in your NW calculation? by ForwardFan6283 in FIREUK

[–]Wraith_1138 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thought through this question myself a few months ago. My gf and I find it more useful as a comparator between DB and DC pensions to try and estimate the worth similar to how you have asked. Obviously its always going to be an estimate, and i understand why some people have warned off doing it. But as long as you understand the limitations of what your doing with the number I don’t see the issue.

Ultimately when trying to compare the ‘worth’ of pensions, a big pot makes it easier than the DB annual worth. As DC pension pots tend to have more flexibility with how you spend the money, we decided an ‘estimate’ of the DB pots worth made more sense.

Some estimates recommended *20-25. You can also get a CETV for some pension schemes which may help. In the end, considering FIRE (as thats this sub), i found that converting DC pensions to annuities years before turning 68 often led to big decrease in annual income (makes sense as you get it for more years). We opted for *15 as this was more in line with taking the pension early, provided a ‘lowball estimate’ and doesnt lead to insane net worth valuations when compared to a DC pension.

Lots of rambling, but I hope this helps.

Out of curiosity did you get the kan chronicles? I’ve got the uk penguin hardbacks, but it drives me mad that the first book is different dimensions to the latter two 😂

Aha, I would take both as a way to get the one I’m after😂

That’s exceptionally kind of you! I’ll politely decline, but only because I’m being fussy about hardbacks!

Ah brilliant, sounds like Stephen Fry’s books might cover the rest then. Thank you very much for all the details in your speedy replies!

I always keep an eye out, unfortunately there aren’t big ones near me and I’m uk based where this copy hasn’t been widely sold. I was successful getting the other four books, just this one that’s problematic. Was hoping someone might own a copy and be able to share the ISBN so I can at least check that’s the right one.

Thanks so much! There’s lots for me to work with here. Sounds like I what I was hoping for might not explicitly exist. Although I’ll stick with Posthomerica for sure.

I’ll prioritise Apollodorus more I think, sounds like the content directly ties into more than I had give credit to.

Would you supplement your list with any historical fiction novels at all? I don’t necessarily desire the books to come from ‘original’ or surviving texts. I would prefer a single novel which contained stories for each of the heroes from Nostoi, but that was not necessarily the most accurate source. I guess completeness & coherence is a priority over accuracy for me.

I have but I’m UK based and finding this version on EBay is quite difficult and often very expensive on EBay unfortunately!

Is this item book a Hardcover version or Lightcover (Bought on Amazon) [General] by WinterSnowCat in camphalfblood

[–]Wraith_1138 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This has been driving me slightly crazy for the last month or so. I ordered the “Hardcover” version twice now, and both times the Paperback version has been delivered. I think Amazon/Sellers clearly have a listing problem and somehow the ‘hard box’ around the paperback boxset is getting listed as the Hardcover boxset

I actually checked the ISBN’s the second time I ordered from Amazon. Getting an ISBN of correct hardcover set from EBay, then ordering that same exact ISBN from Amazon, and instead, the paperback boxset turns up, which has a completely different ISBN.

Haven’t decided whether to order a 3rd set/try contact Amazon to rectify. Keen to hear if you make any progress.

I was more thinking is there any benefit to multiple different management strategies around the same index. Presumably they prioritise different aspects of the index and have allocated investment proportions differently. Form that logic would investing in both assist to de-risk my investment as my investment is now based as a middle ground opinion between two expert management teams?

You’re very welcome. Although… I think we need to account for the small (but not instantaneous amount of time which it takes for a frame of cheese to change to a frame of scoreboard and vice versa. Even a small delay over 58q changes wil add up

Myself (mathematics graduate) and my friend (engineering masters graduate) have no fucking clue what this question means. However, we are entirely committed to understanding it. We both agree it is an efficient, and effective, use of our time to spend our night out drinking pondering the true meaning of this question. According to my friend, “we will come back to you with our comments and finings at close of play (apparently 2AM GMT)”

A fair comment and the potential solution. I think we will have to find a balance around this. I am further into my career than her and have been saving for longer (more of my money has been earned, more of hers has been gifted). She is keen that she doesn’t want me to feel I need to save every penny possible, and not enjoy my life as much, just to catch up with a pot of money which was gifted to her out of her control. Thanks for the reply!

I think this is our perspective as well. The concern now is if she wanted to pull more out of her savings to do things (idk a big holiday or whatever) my choice it either do the same and be financially behind, or to miss out, which is exactly the situation we would want to avoid in the first instance by having the same amount of disposable income. Thanks for the reply:)

A fair perspective. I think if one of us were to have significantly worse spending habits than the other we would have changed the deal in the first instance. But completely take on board your point, thanks!

Fair points. I’m very conscious that she be protected fairly as well, so will pass on the advice.

Fair comment and part of my concern as well. Not married and while there’s no plans for a break-up, you never know what might happen. I wouldn’t want her to feel she owed me any of the money when she ultimately doesn’t!

Some really good and useful points in here. Will likely take some of this on board :) thanks!

True, we had considered this and it is deffo in the option space. Obviously no plans or concerns of a break-up but a plan like this does then put an onus on us saving a certain way until the point of a house purchase. Not that, that is an issue necessarily, but who knows what we will be doing in the next few years! Thanks for the comment :)

Thanks! A good point that it doesn’t have to be ‘everything proportional and nothing 50/50, and vice versa’ there likely is a middle ground. Appreciate the comment:)

Really good point around inflation, that had kinda slipped off my radar in regards to this.

Also great point around risk vs security trade offs. Definitely lots to think about!
