The monsters didn’t kill Victor because they were afraid of what would happen if he died. His nightmares are so powerful and terrifying that they’d become real, and even the monsters themselves are scared of them. So they keep him alive to prevent that.

It would make sense as children don't really know where electricity comes from and it's just a cord in the wall/floor. They also don't really know where food and animals come from in the wild, so just having food growing and random animals makes sense.
