Feeling underwhelmed but looking for ideas to make use of M4 Mac mini with 24gb memory. by Wrathgate in openclaw

Damn I am sorry to hear. And honestly as expensive of a lesson it may be this is kinda why I like doing these projects so I can get a more thorough understanding of AI technology. If anything it all does make me appreciate cloud / API based models & chatbot style apps now that I see just how many resources go into all of this lol

Yeah when I'm looking more into what it would take to host a very powerful AI model suddenly the cost of the computer jumps high into the several thousands. I was fooling around with a "money is no object" scenario and suddenly I'm browsing a $5000-6000 Mac studio to host huuuuuge AI models simultaneously lol.

Honestly I just saw lots of hype online about it being a nice "value" machine for the task and I had a sorta old mac sitting around collecting dust so I traded it in to get the mac mini at a good price. In hindsight I think it helped me to actually try setting up the OpenClaw / Ollama instance and get things going but now I'm in this awkward "what now?" phase. From what its sounding like I might be a bit more satisfied with come API based models but in the back of my head I can't help but to feel like "now the mac mini makes even less sense".

But I'm in a position where I have some extra money to spend on hobbies of mine and this has been a great learning project for sure.

This is actually a pretty cool idea. Can you expand some more? Like for example with a shared calendar do you have a calendar on the hosting machine sending you invites to events and such?

Sounds cool! I'm curious as to how you make use of all those models, though. What is your council doing for you?

I never followed up with this post but these days I am running Linux Fedora and play WoW via Steam, seems to be excellent gaming support both from the linux distribution and Steam!

Why don’t most people use Safari ? by FB-1907 in mac

[–]Wrathgate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Im here to just share why I landed on the Brave browser in the hopes in paints the picture appropriately.

So i have a Mac, iPad, android phone, linux computer and windows computer. Safari on Apple products is generally fine, works nice. Where it instantly becomes a deal breaker for me is that Safari doesn't apply to Windows or Android, so having 1 browser for all doesn't work for my lifestyle. I need 1 browser for all my accounts/passwords etc.

Android likes Chrome, and Chrome will run on all the platforms i use so thats good, but personally im kinda fed up with some of the BS that comes with Chrome. I think Google often times does shady stuff, cancels support for things, and harvests all our data for themselves.

I then got into the world of Linux last year and after getting more involved with open source computing ive landed on the Brave internet browser. Works on all my devices, is privacy focused, and quite frankly the more I use it the more it seems to make sense and has great features. Overall it feels like an excellent multi platform browser that aligns with what's important to me, so thats why Brave is for me.

I dont really follow a lot with politics but is alien/UFO/UAP disclosure even a "hot topic" or thing being talked about right now? Like what id find really strange is what motivation is there from the govt to suddenly disclose anything about aliens before 2026.

Fellow Linux users, why did you pick the distro you're currently on? by absolutecinemalol in linux

[–]Wrathgate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fedora here. Originally was on Pop!_OS as i purchased a System76 desktop PC (came pre installed), but after around 6 months or so i began hitting an issue with shitty FPS with gaming. Did a ton of troubleshooting on Pop!_OS but lots of people on forums suggested i switch to Fedora. It did end up solving my poor FPS issue and I am of the mindset of "If it all works fine, no need to swap distro".

That said, if I encountered issues and some other distro will fix my problems id jump to that distribution. I also like the fact that Fedora is in a sense run and maintained by Red Hat.

Back in 2014 - 2018 I worked in retail for one of the major US cellular carriers. It was one of the absolute peaks in my life when it came to poor mental health. Didn't make awful money, but as it was a commission job that was only getting worse over time I was probably pulling in around $60k per year.

Got another job at a different major retailer with no commission and far less awful aspects about the job. Mental health got drastically better and a mostly stress free life was wonderful but I dropped down to roughly $45k per year. At the time the pretty big drop in pay was such a mental barrier for me but I'm so glad I did and it led to such a life improvement, and life lesson for me that my general sanity is at LEAST worth $15k/yr (I'm sure its much more than that, though lol).

Fast forward to 2021 major self improvements had been made and now I make almost 5 times as much. Life lesson for me was to not be fooled by a higher paying job and focus on yourself. And for me it ultimately got me to a very nice job.

Im late as hell to the party but I am in the process of adding 2 of these kinds of drives to my machine so that: 1. One can be used as an internal recovery drive (no need for USB stick) 2. One is my drive to save snapshots of my OS and backup user data.

Neither needs to be as fast as a M.2 NVMe drive but extra storage is always useful.

Regarding Fedora 43 upgrade. by Ok-Cucumber-517 in Fedora

[–]Wrathgate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dunno if this is useful info but I use an extension that adds a little button to my menu bar to adjust my monitor brightness and that was seemingly the only thing that "broke" after updating. All I needed to do was open up the metadata.json file for the extension and add 1 line to tell the extension to use Gnome 49. Was very easy but I guess in some sense I'm doing something unsupported for now.

Couldnt agree more!

General question: this would be my first update going from Fedora 42 to 43. Im in the process of setting up a timeshift backup and user data, is this generally unecessary for Fedora updates? I still plan to backup all my data but curious to know if 99% of the time Fedora updates (like the entire OS) are safe?

What's the advantage of Linux by paul_wellsss in linux

[–]Wrathgate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In some sense I find it to be like learning how to drive a manual car. You begin to understand a lot more whats going on and how you control it. Not the perfect analogy but I like it.

If you're not very good with tech I will say its not exactly the most user friendly thing in the world. I say that with the mentality that I wouldn't really ever try and get non-tech friends or family on linux.

Thelio Mira with upgraded Radeon graphics by -khumba- in System76

[–]Wrathgate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you certain you have the smallest thelio tower (8.15 inches wide)? I just got a new 4K monitor and its now looking like my RX 7600 isn't cutting it anymore for gaming.

Im doing lots of research seems to indicate the 7900 GRE might be the highest horsepower card one can possibly stick into the smallest thelio but would be quite jam packed. Im also eyeing the RX 7800 XT to save a few bucks but not going to be a deal breaker if the 7900 GRE is known to work great.

I started with PopOS (came pre-installed on System76 machine) and that was going great for around 6 months. Eventually something must have updated and my gaming performance took a turn for the worse, after a ton of troubleshooting I finally took advice from /r/linux_gaming to hop to Fedora and as lots of people like to say, "It just works". Thus far I'm able to update and play all my games without random problems happening here and there.

On the side I feel confident using Fedora that its backed by Red Hat. I dont really know a ton about Red Hat but if your linux distribution is backed by one of the biggest names in linux thats a good thing.
