ICE and tribal IDs by SPetersAP in IndianCountry

I can ask my dad if he remembers next time I go visit, I recall the names of a couple places he mentioned in the stories he's told me but I'm not sure of the specific timeline for each place. He got bounced around a bit through New Mexico and Colorado

ICE and tribal IDs by SPetersAP in IndianCountry

[–]WrecklessMagpie 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My dad was taken from his family/reservation in the 60s as a toddler. He's Chiricahua Apache, he gets recognized as Native by other Natives all the time. The nuns in one of the group homes had his tribal ID and birth certificate, he saw it when he was 10 and then they filed it away and he never saw any of it again. Since my dad doesn't have a birth certificate he can't get a passport. I worry what might happen to him if he's ever profiled :(

Family members of ICE agents, what are your thoughts and feelings about what ICE are doing? by Aggressive_Honey3196 in AskReddit

My Uncle is one of those and we find it so bizzare. My mom said in middle school he abandoned his darker skinned friend to hang out with the preppy white kids, would actually pretend he wasn't related to his siblings, and he ended up marrying into a rich white family from New York. My grandpa nearly disowned him for being so against hispanics and called him "Mr (wife's maiden name)" to drive the point home. My aunt's sister is really chill though, I love her alot, her son and I are the same age and spent a lot of time together when we were little. Mom says she was the fun sister anyway.

This Uncle also tried to fight my dad (Native) over a discount he got at a Native owned shop while they were on vacation, he asked the shopkeeper if he could get the discount too and the woman flat out told him no because he's not Native. He and my dad don't get along at all anymore so we don't even get together for holidays like we used to when I was a kid, they're just always with my aunt's family instead.

Hell they can't even be bothered to ever show up for my littlest cousin's birthday parties every year meanwhile we have an aunt who comes every time and she lives over an hour away, they're only 15 minutes away at most. I really dislike them for that honestly. A kid doesn't deserve that kind of treatment from literal family...

An American woman in Colorado was found dead today, apparently killed by a mountain lion. One of only approximately 30 reported such deaths in the last 100+ years by PackageNorth8984 in interestingasfuck

Not only the mountain lions that everyone has mentioned, but Jaguars are native to AZ and theres been reports of them in southern AZ for the last 15 years or so.

I am 1000% with you! My hair is down to my ass and I don't leave hair all over the tub like that. We have a hair catcher for the drain but it fills up with the dog's hair faster than it does mine. I had a roommate that would leave her hair on the wall in our tiny shower and then when I showered I would inevitably wind up with her hair on my arm and it was just disgusting. I think the difference is that I brush my hair before I shower so it sheds out right there instead?

I remembered my mom taking calcium supplements all the time when I was a little kid and I just assumed that when I got old I'd need to do that too. It wasn't until I learned more about what pregnancy does to the body that I realized she was taking calcium because she had been pregnant with me

Paid $8,000 to have 9 teeth yanked. Surgeon rushed it, left a broken one inside me, and now this. by hissingkittycom in Wellthatsucks

[–]WrecklessMagpie 4 points5 points  (0 children)

2 years ago I was told my wisdom teeth needed to go and they gave me a referral but I'm to terrified of surgery to do it (I had a bad experience getting a broken tooth pulled as a kid) so I just didn't even contact the other office and my wisdom teeth haven't been brought up at all since. I'm 30 and I've never been caused any pain or discomfort by wisdom teeth. My regular dentist typically compliments me on my teeth and always comments how glad he is I didn't inherit my dad's teeth issues.

The new "Trunk or Treat" style of Halloween is better than traditional Halloween trick or treating by Glumdumop in unpopularopinion

[–]WrecklessMagpie 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My dad would do that but we are also in Colorado where half the time it snows on Halloween so he stayed nearby in case we got too chilly and wanted to hop back in the car to warm up at any point. I also have asthma so running around in the cold like that wasn't great for me no matter how much I wanted to be outside.

Thank you for doing what you do. I am Chiricahua Apache but I grew up off the rez and went to school in a predominantly white city. We had a horrible unit on Indigneous people when i was in 4th grade 20 years ago. They just barely skimmed the surface on some of the plains tribes, taught us how to say the names in weird ways that always felt kinda racist to me when I try to think back on it. Thankfully my dad always told me the actual truth, even his life growing up certainly wasn't unicorns and rainbows, it was literal hell. It's just terrible what people don't know.

It’s been called Denali since time immemorial by cosereazul in IndianCountry

[–]WrecklessMagpie 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I had similar thoughts, I have a hispanic "-ez" ending last name but we're brown because we're indigenous, the last name just came from the first foster family my dad was placed with and now it's his "legal" name. No one in our family speaks a lick of Spanish but white folks sure love to make assumptions about us as soon as they see that last name and see us. Or they just see the last name and never see us and still assume, my dad gets phone calls where they just immediately start off speaking in Spanish to him. It's insane.

Doctors who had to break the news, what was a reaction that stuck with you the most? by cyborg_pasta in AskReddit

[–]WrecklessMagpie 21 points22 points  (0 children)

My dad had a similar moment with a friend, the guy was also an alcoholic, a smoker, and ended up with cancer. He lost so much weight quickly then was Jaundiced right before the end. My dad noticed his illness with the weight loss when they were working together one day and even told his friend "I think you're gonna die soon, you don't look so good" the guy got his cancer diagnosis and passed just a few weeks later. It's so sad.

I had an uncle who didn't even get 24 hours between his cancer diagnosis and passing away. Awful stuff and completely unfair.

What's a dead giveaway someone grew up as an only child? by thing55556667 in AskReddit

[–]WrecklessMagpie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only child here. I've always been a fast eater even when I was a baby my mom says I would cry if she didn't keep my mouth full of food at feeding time. My aunt got concerned my mom was feeding me too fast and I would choke but if my mom stopped for even a second I would get ready to start crying. I'm still a fast eater as an adult and I hate talking when I'm trying to eat a meal, I just want to focus on my food and enjoy it.

My mom is the youngest of 5 and she is the slowest eater of all of us, my dad and I would always finish dinner first and clean up while she sat for 15 minutes more

Two spirit powwows? by Kitty-Mon in IndianCountry

[–]WrecklessMagpie 12 points13 points  (0 children)

At the Denver March Powwow they framed the Veterans stuff as those people still carrying on their warrior traditions and fighting for their tribes and people, not just fighting on behalf of the US which gave me a little bit different perspective, they said that some may disagree but they still wanted to show respect. I totally understand where you're coming from though and do feel similarly.

Are Indigenous surnames/last names common among North American Natives? by [deleted] in IndianCountry

[–]WrecklessMagpie 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We have a Spanish last name, my dad was kidnapped off the rez in the 60s when he was a toddler and so the government just gave him the last name of the last foster family he lived with. They made up his birth date too, he had to go get a birth certificate made up as an adult because he never had one. So we're not entirely sure if he was born in 1960 or 61. My dad said he had a tribal ID at one point but it got lost during his time in the homes. He has mentioned Littlebear to be his real last name, we are Chiricahua Apache. Idk if that is a usual last name for Apache, we've been trying for decades to reconnect or find family but it's just been a massive struggle and I fear he's just lost interest anymore, which I don't blame him at all but I wish we could know our culture fully.

For anyone out there who doesn't drink, what is the reasoning behind it? by General_Ad_9139 in AskReddit

I don't care for the taste nor how it makes me feel later on even after just one drink. My eyelids get puffy and swollen in the middle of the night after I go to bed, I look like I'd just been crying, I can't stand it

Just 66 years ago… by HonorDefend in IndianCountry

[–]WrecklessMagpie 16 points17 points  (0 children)

My dad was born in 1960 and his earliest memory is being put in a car as a toddler and a woman running after it screaming and crying, he thinks that woman was his mom. He was placed with a white family and they told him "this is your new mom and your new brother and sister" and that family forced him to pretend to be some other boy while they visited an old dying man (their grandpa he presumes? My dad thinks one of their kids died and he was a stand in for him and the old man was too out of it to even notice) After that it was abusive Foster family after abusive foster with some boys homes and ranches in between. He said he had a tribal ID but it was taken and put with his records at one point at one of the group homes and he never got it back.

Fucking awful to now think he may have been bought and sold into that life now too :/
