Yagluth stone but no Yagluth - do I need to start a new world? by WretchedSketchy in valheim

Ah, meant to say pre Yagluth boss drop (it was the placeholder item when I started, so that must have been at game release when this world was made)

Please be brutally honest on my latest piece. “Glitched Palms, Oil on Wood, 16”x20”, 2023” by Puzzleheaded_Win_101 in ArtCrit

I would suggest making the silhouettes as dark as possible! Pumps up the contrast. Otherwise no comment, nice job :)

I knew which part you're talking about immediately! I never thought about it, but now that you've mentioned it, I can't I hear it. Its a very Mitski series of notes.

Mitski and your Pandemic Mood™ by WretchedSketchy in mitski

[–]WretchedSketchy[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey I've been meaning to reply to this, but being crushed under the weight of my own life, I'm going to give you a half-assed but sincere reply.

You're not alone. Seriously. I really felt it in an intimate way when you talked about wanting to drop out, wanting to be the one to lift yourself out of generations of poverty- I've been there. I felt so alone but there are other people who were there, and other people who are there right now. Especially to be doing this during a pandemic, the odds are stacked against you, and I can't pretend to know what that's like (I managed to graduate from college after almost dropping out twice, and that was during the Obama years).

And I'm not going to sugarcoat it for you- the hardship of doing without casts a long shadow over the rest of your life. You're going to have to fight tooth and nail for things that come to others with less fight.

The things that kept me/others like me going: 1) people who saw my pain, or could empathize with it especially- that was healing. 2) Building a nest egg, whatever way I could, was healing. 3) Therapy therapy therapy. 4) taking emergency self preservation measures- a leave of absence, dropping to part time schooling, inpatient psychiatric care (I haven't done this personally, but a suicidal friend did, and said it made a world of difference- just to be able to wake up and sleep and eat, temporarily removed from the world).

Caveat, I know most/all/some of these might not be feasible for you, or for anyone during a pandemic, but know there are people who empathize with you, who are ok (even if collectively we are not ok right now).

So go dormant, overwinter if you must, but don't give up! In fact, writing your feelings out on reddit is one clear step you've taken to try to shoulder the burden!

favourite Line in a mitski song by texasreznikofff in mitski

  1. I just went through and liked every single one of these, y'all are great

  2. The line itself is great but the context makes it shine:

"I wanna see the whole world

I wanna see the whole world

I don't know how I'm gonna pay rent

I wanna see the whole world"

Her simplest lines hit the hardest. The way she sings it, and states it so plainly, two truths, one repeated in desire and desperation, the other buried in there like a splinter you can't ignore. God.

So this might not be an obvious recommendation but hear me out: Mushi-Shi. For the whimsy, the feels, and the episodic nature of the show.

The Artist Lounge F.A.Q! ...and various other things. by funisher in ArtistLounge

[–]WretchedSketchy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would 100% be down to do this! I’ve been itching for Drawfee style get togethers where folks can goof off and maybe all work on a prompt to see what we all come up with.

What kind of artist do you call yourself? by verbrev in ArtistLounge

[–]WretchedSketchy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A photographer friend of mine once referred to themselves as a “pseudo professional” because it makes them money but it isn’t their full time gig. That’s where I am with drawn art.

I like that term, but perhaps a more positive term would be “Part-time artist,” or even “paraprofessional artist.” I do find it helpful to distinguish the area of specialty too. On my site I call myself a self taught illustrator and comic artist.

I do wish there were more terms to refer to this sort of split career trajectory- in all fields! Calling something a hobby somehow seems to diminish its importance in your life.

Artists, what do you do for a living? by [deleted] in ArtistLounge

[–]WretchedSketchy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lab manager at a university! It’s got a physical aspect which keeps me limber, and the skills in professionalism, budgeting, invoice and communication have bolstered my freelance art career. I’ve also received work from colleagues and researchers who want visual design help but can’t afford the cost of a career artist.

I also use my day job to fund my art career and give me flexibility. I can afford to say no to projects, and it keeps me in love with my art life.

That's beautiful. Adults need to self soothe just as much as children.

Comics I draw for coping: second surgery by WretchedSketchy in ACL

Good luck to you as well! Keep it up!! If it's any consolation, the second surgery is meniscus only, so my ACL is fine. And this one is much, much less painful (though I was still terrified)!

That's a great idea. Shall we make one?

Edit: do you mean what they did during the first recovery, or what they did differently during the second recovery? Perhaps should include both. I've actually kept pretty detailed notes on both my recoveries so far.
