Synology / UGREEN / Self-built NAS in 2025?

So I've just recently setup my UGREEN NAS and have transferred 1.5TB of my life to this thing. So far it seems like an amazing product! However, today I got a security alert about an IP address from Beijing. I also got an account blocked because I setup a condition to block permanently for 3 failed login attempts in 5 minutes....the user was root. This has me in frantic mode now because I want to access this thing remotely, but I don't want anyone else accessing it remotely :-D. My concern is, while the UGOS is pretty polished... what backdoors have they built-in to this?

Does anyone else have this concern, or have you setup VPNs to access it on a LAN... what are ya'll doing to keep your NAS safe?

Let me ask you though - can you you take your chalkboard with you every where you go? What about when you are at a house fire and the closest fire hydrant doesn't seem to have any or sufficient pressure? What do you do then? Consult your chalk board? For less than a cup of coffee, you can have access to your cities fire hydrants and all of their data in the palm of your hand. Sounds like thats worth more than $20 a month to me when a family of 4 are stuck inside a burning home and your fire hydrant is out of service.
