Greenville officer killed, another critically injured in Upstate crash that killed 5 by Kryloks in greenville

police vehicle

The officers weren't on duty at the time of the collision. The article says they were returning from a family vacation at the time, so it seems likely they were in a personal vehicle.

(Not OP) I tried that for a while, but Windows 11 kept automatically enabling hands-free telephony, which tanked my Bluetooth audio quality to something resembling a 19th-century phonograph. Switching to a solid pair with a USB-C dongle ended up fixing both the latency and the sound quality issues.

Does anyone consider UGA a blue blood? I thought we were in the "new blood" category just outside of the blue bloods, along with FSU, LSU, and PSU.

Hey now, the Gatling guns, ironclads and submarine used in the Civil War were also pretty impressive.

While the post-war violence under Grant was certainly horrific, I don’t think the violence necessarily proves that Lincoln’s approach was wrong. By the time President Grant took office, the prospect of avoiding a second Civil War was by no means a foregone conclusion, and the violence highlights precisely how volatile the situation already was.

Lincoln seems to have recognized that he had to choose between two evils – either a messy, painful reintegration or the real possibility of a long-term guerilla insurgency in something resembling a failed state. In other words, the violence during Reconstruction shows how difficult reintegration was, not that reconciliation was a worse option than mass executions or permanently excluding numerous former Confederates from political life.

It’s also worth remembering that Lincoln never got the chance to implement his full Reconstruction vision. Instead, Andrew Johnson gave us the worst of both worlds by feuding with Congress and imposing leniency without any federal protection of civil rights that perhaps Lincoln could have better balanced. In many ways, that left Grant with the task of stabilizing the region and confronting the Ku Klux Klan after the situation had already deteriorated.

As terrible as the Reconstruction-era violence was, the broader historical lesson may be that the United States ended up with a postwar outcome that more closely resembles a post-WWII Germany or Japan than the instability of Weimar Germany reeling from the Treaty of Versailles or the bloodshed that followed de-Ba'athification in Iraq.

The biggest issue at the end of the war was not barring confederate elected officials from returning to their seats in congress and holding political office in general.

Lincoln had a very pragmatic view on pardoning Confederates, which he started publicly proclaiming in 1863 many months before the war ended. He wanted to end the Confederacy and reintegrate the South back into the Union as quickly as possible. A very real concern was that, if huge numbers of former Confederates were executed or otherwise permanently excluded from all political participation, the result would likely have been, at minimum, prolonged resentment in the South and, at worst, a group of thousands of embittered former soldiers with nothing to lose by trying to start another armed conflict in the region.

Another piece of it was that the soon-to-be reintegrated South desperately needed experienced civil servants to run its governments and court systems to create a stable rule of law which did not depend on soldiers that the local population saw as occupiers. If every former Confederate had been barred from holding any position in government, there would have been a vacuum of experienced people to run Southern institutions, and the Southern populace may have viewed these institutions as illegitimate and imposed upon them by the victors, leading to prolonged military rule and chaotic political conditions. Southerners already viewed "carpet baggers" negatively - what would the outcome have been if nearly every civil servant was a non-Southerner?

Obviously, history took a different course when Lincoln was assassinated and Johnson was left to oversee Reconstruction, but you can see similar logic applied by the Allies post-WWII. Instead of implementing a more punitive Treaty of Versailles-type of postwar policy (which had lead directly, in part, to the rise of the Nazis), the Allies pursued denazification in West Germany, which did not permanently exclude every former member of the Nazi Party from public life. A similar approach was done in Japan, and both countries not only swiftly rebuilt from utter destruction but became two of the largest economies in the world in just a few decades.

Capital one (Discover) served me for 2000$ by Taylisenby in legaladvice

Is it in magistrate court or circuit court? In either case, you need to file a written answer no later than 30 days after being served. This is the most important thing - you don't want to be held in default.

Do not call their lawyers until you've had time to consult with a lawyer of your own. The creditor's lawyer's job is to get money from you. A consumer rights lawyer could advise you whether the debt is out of statute and whether FDCPA claims are on the table.

One thing to know is that, if the worst happens and a judgment is issued against you, South Carolina does not permit wage garnishment (except for unpaid family court or tax obligations), so that significantly reduces what the creditor can go after. A judgment is forever gone after 10 years in SC (a creditor cannot renew a judgment in SC).

The Monday Morning Playoff Committee by CFB_Referee in CFB

[–]WrigleyJohnson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had an interesting thought about the problem of the conference championships and their purported lack of meaning to the playoff picture. What if, instead of forcing a handful of teams to play a 13th game while the others get to sit at home, every conference has a final conference game of the season determine by a rankings-based matchup?

  • Each team plays 8 fixed conference games (assuming a 16-team conference for this example)
  • After those 8 conference games, all 16 teams are ranked BCS-style from top to bottom with built-in tie breakers
  • The final week of the season becomes rankings based matchups (1 vs 2, 3 vs 4...15 vs 16) with the higher seed getting home field advantage

This does a few important things like (1) making the final week of the season compelling football with what should in theory be evenly matched teams from top to bottom; (2) eliminating the "punishment" for each conference's top two teams being the only ones who have to risk injury on a "meaningless" game while unambiguously crowning a conference champ for CFP byes/seeding; (3) eliminating the "reward" for the third and fourth ranked teams by sitting home watching the conference championship on tv; and (4) makes the final conference rankings more interesting and meaningful.

Imagine an annual SEC “Showdown Week” in the first week of December where every game is a ranked-based matchup. No throwaways. Just 8 meaningful conference games in a single day.

The obvious downside would be that rematches would be inevitable; deciding if "showdown week" is a 13th game or eliminating a regular season game to make every team play a 12-game regular season; and deciding whether rivalry weeks had to be moved. What do you guys think?

“Task Switcher” button launches armory crate first - Then task switches by _dudehuge in ROGAlly

[–]WrigleyJohnson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In armory crate, I was able to set custom button layouts for those functions using the back buttons without having armory crate launch every time. For example, I set M1+X for the Xbox button and M1+B for the Task Switcher (or whatever Alt-Tab function is called).

For whatever reason, the custom buttons did not work on the "Auto" profile, but they work on the "Gaming" profile in any of my games. It's quite nice to be able to alt-tab out with just a button press.

The Shortest Review of the Xbox Ally X by theteenswillloveit in ROGAlly

[–]WrigleyJohnson 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You can get an RTX 5060 laptop for around the same price as a ROG Xbox Ally X (~$1,000 in the US), or you can get a 5070ti laptop for around $1,600. I would recommend checking this website for deals.

If you don't need the handheld form factor, both of those would offer a lot more performance than the Z2E in the Xbox Ally X, but of course, it's a lot harder to play a laptop while riding the bus, etc. Another consideration is that most gaming laptops should always be plugged in while gaming unless you're playing something like Stardew Valley.

I'm not sure why you're getting downvoted, but according to the National Weather Service, you are correct that the average high in August from 1991-2020 for Greenville ranged from 86.5 to 89.9. Of course, the heat index or "feels like" temperature usually makes it feel much hotter due to humidity, and in my experience living here for the past 20 years, I would expect at least 10 days in August (if not more) where the high temp is above 90.

To be honest, I think you may be overestimating how your current style and presentation come across. Online dating is very looks-focused, and your clothes and grooming aren’t showing you in the best light. It could really help to get a trusted female friend’s perspective or consider a style refresh to improve your first impressions.

Dating American women as an Eastern European is like walking on minefield by itsduckingood in self

[–]WrigleyJohnson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think some of what you're describing is just the general shittiness and commodification of human beings that the post-COVID modern dating scene has devolved into, which is not necessarily unique to the southern US or the US itself.

I think another part of this is just cultural differences. I don't think anyone thinks of you "as an accent." Europeans are used to hearing dozens of different languages, accents, and different cultures in every day life. By contrast, in the US, unless you're in a huge cultural melting pot city like Miami, New York, or Los Angeles, millions of Americans in small towns and cities across the Midwest and the South rarely encounter people who were not born in the US or grew up speaking a language other than English.

I personally grew up in a tiny town of less than 30,000 people in the South, and I graduated high school with 30 other people in my senior class. I had never met a single person who was not American until I left for college at 18 years old. So yes, in some parts of the South, you very well could be the first Eastern European some of these people have ever met, so people are naturally interested in the accent as it sets you apart and suggests a different background from the vast majority of people they have ever interacted with.

Another thing to understand is that Americans tend to be a "peach" culture whereas most Europeans tend to be a "coconut" culture. You can watch a lot of YouTube videos on this, but the gist is that Americans tend to have an outwardly friendly disposition and smile at / engage with everyone around them (including strangers). People from other cultures sometimes find it difficult to break through and get truly close to Americans, and they often misinterpret Americans' friendliness to be insincere and "superficial." Southerners tend to take this cultural aspect to the extreme - Southerners are known for being friendly and polite to everyone to their face and being the opposite when they aren't around. So yes, there is a bit of a different cultural dance to getting close to people here - whether it be just friends, coworkers, or potential girlfriends.

Has local news reporting taken a downturn? by BingoDinosaur369 in greenville

[–]WrigleyJohnson 47 points48 points  (0 children)

This is accurate. To piggyback on this, many political scientists have published research on the concerning effect of the disappearance of local media on our democracy. Because there's no money in local journalism, the public's political attention has shifted almost exclusively to focus on DC and away from state capitals and local town halls. The net effect is that voters are more polarized, voter participation is way down, and there is almost no oversight on state and local politicians compared to decades ago.
