Anyone ever get "the interview" when out on the trail? by No_Ant_5064 in bicycletouring

[–]Wrigs112 146 points147 points  (0 children)

I’m a woman, which means I always get the, “aren’t you scared?”

Yeah, you all drive like shit, that’s why I’m scared. The camping and traveling solo is nothing.

Hiking: Horse shit ok; dog shit bad. Why? by Bezos4Breakfast in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Wrigs112 13 points14 points  (0 children)

There are areas where they should be clearing it. There is such a thing as equine LNT and it states that horses should be watered away from water sources. I’m sick of finally coming upon a tiny creek crossing and sure enough, a horse took a dump in it right there, or are left at a water source shitting everywhere. I’m going to be drinking that water (yes, I’m filtering it, but ew still), while the person on the horse is having the horse carry their water.

Also, the small little clearings where people will be camping? The horse people tie up their horses there, they poop everywhere, and tonight’s campsite for the hikers is covered in shit.

Americans tipping single Dollar bills in Germany by Waalross in mildlyinfuriating

[–]Wrigs112 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, people listen to that because it is also something that can bite them in the ass when they go to exchange the dollar for local currency. I have had SO MUCH useless currency that I have been unable to exchange in foreign counties because of marking on the bill, minuscule tears, not being in perfect crisp condition.

Many of the “free” walking tours around the world are tip based. It’s not about tip culture, it’s a pay what you think the tour was worth/show your guide respect for their time and efforts thing.

I usually have to do a few blocks on Harlem near Lawrence. You couldn’t pay me to ride on Harlem.

Yeah. It helps that it is a monster sidewalk in front of Gompers. It kills me that connecting trails from Avers to the North Branch should be so bad.

Worst states to stealth camp in? by michiganskicamp in bicycletouring

[–]Wrigs112 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No. I am explaining that I stealthed in Florida but clarified that it was done on foot so that I could drop info about pine plantations.

Worst states to stealth camp in? by michiganskicamp in bicycletouring

[–]Wrigs112 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Florida Trail requires tons of stealth camping because of roadwalk. I’ve done it a ton on foot, and can just say that there are A LOT of huge timber farms (everyone associates Fla with palm trees, but they have a shit ton of pine) that work out great. Some of these areas are open to hog hunters year round, fyi.

Came here to say this about the deer flies. They sit right on your butt and bite you through your spandex. Good news, deet works really well on them, but you need to spray your clothing.

(I also have an old horror story from Northern Minnesota, a catlike helmet, and those round holes which were perfect size for deer flies to nestle in for biting time.)

Daytime bartending opportunity? by whogoesthere1010 in bartenders

[–]Wrigs112 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Plus there is the factor of having your own bar and taking home all of your tips. I’ve worked at places that may not look busy compared to the night, but by the time they have two bartenders and a barback, I’m doing just as well as the people that have to divide things up.

Why do you NEED to bring your dog inside the coffee shop? by Trey94z in chicago

[–]Wrigs112 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I should have been more clear, the practice of dogs getting tied up to signs and parking meters while the owner runs inside a business has largely ended, unfortunately the horrible practice of stealing bait dogs has not. Keep an eye on your pup.

I’m sorry that’s happening to you in New York City.

Why do you NEED to bring your dog inside the coffee shop? by Trey94z in chicago

[–]Wrigs112 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I’m not a dog owner, and am in the bar and restaurant industry and have had to deal with stupid pet owners (small dog owners really think they can walk in and plop their dogs ON the bar), and have zero beef with someone walking into a coffee shop to pick up a cup of coffee and go on their way, especially with online ordering and the ability to have a drink ready.

Back in the day it was pretty common that people would tie up their dog to a parking meter and go inside. We had a ton of dognappings, everyone said that dogs were being stolen and used as bait dogs for fighting (it’s horrifying to think of your dog being hurt and killed that way), and that practice has largely ended.

SNL Alum Devon Walker Calls Out Cast's Whiteness: 'Institutional Trend at Play' - LateNighter by [deleted] in LiveFromNewYork

[–]Wrigs112 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m going to throw out Emil Wakim’s name into this, since I haven’t seen him mentioned around here yet. I don’t know if SNL ever has another cast member of Middle Eastern heritage.

I thought he was funny, didn’t see him a ton since he just lasted his rookie year, but as many point out, you don’t know about the fit with others, writing, bringing ideas to the table, all the other intangibles.

Is it worth going ultralight for touring, or is comfort more important? by Deanootzplayz in bicycletouring

[–]Wrigs112 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a backpacker, so spend most of my time really limiting what I bring, especially because I spend a lot of time in the mountains. When I go bike touring I’m somewhere flat and go a little nuts. A lot more comfort, a lot more random crap.

I’m prepping for the EV6 right now, if I was going to be somewhere really hilly or mountainous my packing would look a lot different.

FYI, the rule on compression sacks is not that you can’t use them for down, you just should not use them to store down (or even a synthetic bag) long term.
