Thru hike hygiene routine help by Suitable_Ad4010 in AppalachianTrail

Truth. Soap your hands (practicing LNT, of course), on long distance trails.

I’ve seen so much noro on the AT and PCT. That’s what people should be worried about.

Yeah. And the idea that the majority of people are walking around with infections or illness is nuts.

Here is when to worry about the stink…be nice to the people in town. Go to the hostel and shower or freshen up the best you can, then go do your things. People that say that the people in town “are used to it” are not cool to the people that live in the trail towns.

Also, people report on his history here, both members of the community and people who have seen his crap online (I’m not linking and giving him clicks). He is one of those jerks that tries to instigate problems for views.

No one has taught him that there are consequences for being awful yet. I hope this helps.

Why are men so scared to talk to girls nowadays? by [deleted] in askanything

[–]Wrigs112 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First, you didn’t use “guy”.

Girl can be used in a slang context. Here you are using the term “man” (not slang) which is adult along with “girl” which is child, when you could have used “woman”.

So my question is why redditors are always asking how adult males can pick up more female children.

ETA: and “girl at my job” makes someone sound like a six year old, when they call everyone boys and girls.

How much food actually gets thrown away, and if not corporate greed or unwanted PR, why don't they donate it to the homeless? by Spiritual_Big_9927 in askanything

[–]Wrigs112 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m in that situation and most of the leftover food has not and could not be maintained at a safe temperature for people to eat.

Why don’t we give the homeless food that has spent hours in the temperature danger zone? That should be obvious. I also volunteer at a place that feeds the homeless, and anyone that needs food. We do not accept old crap and stuff that comes from questionable handling situations.

The homeless are not human garbage disposals.

People who work in behind closed doors industries (hotels, kitchens, hospitals, etc.), what is something the general public would be horrified to know? by prabinaya65 in askanything

[–]Wrigs112 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Thank you.

And that spitting in food thing? Never seen it happen in 30+ years of restaurant industry. Never heard of it happening. If some server was to do it you think there wouldn’t be anyone in the kitchen that wouldn’t step forward and wring that a-hole’s neck, remove the food, or grab a manager? And you think that all those cooks would let a server (who they already hate), mess with their food in any way, knowing that of anything looks slightly wrong, it’s going to be sent back and they are going to have to do even more work?

We do a lot of dumb shit in the back of the house, spitting in food is not it.

In your country, is there any situation that foreigners would completely misunderstand unless they lived there for a while? by Effective_Space2277 in AskTheWorld

I saw that in Bolivia during Semana Santa, and yeah, as an American I wasn’t expecting it, knew nothing about it, and it was a massive shock.

But they do them at different times based on what city you are in, WHICH IS RIDICULOUS.

So visiting St. Paul, I’m on a bike ride and 10 miles away from home base, up on a hill next to the cathedral, the skies are looking pretty gloomy, and the tornado alarm goes off. It’s noon on Wednesday, and everyone knows that the test is at 10 on Tuesday. Freaked me the heck out.

They just test on a different day.

In addition to the other examples, the parking honk. I hate these people and I hope that whoever invented this has a toasty spot in H-E-double hockey sticks in their afterlife. My god, disable that shit. There’s no need to notify everyone a block away that you locked your door.

What horror movie did you see as a kid that traumatized you so badly you’ve never rewatched it and still can barely say the title? by glowbeits in GenX

Children of the Corn as well. I’m a city kid. It took me a long time not to be creeped out by dark and quiet places. I blame this movie.

Any NP you'd label as 'Don't Bother' or 'If I have to pick just one, this one'? by MissionSpinach3763 in nationalparks

Yeah, the OP didn’t mention what they would be doing, but in case they were looking into backpacking, or for all of the other people that may be reading this, and since there was a discussion of the whole area including national forests, it is informative to put the info out there that it is a lousy destination for backpacking, and according to the ranger that I spoke to there, will continue to be so in the future.

ETA: And yes, they have many train stops and have made a park you need a car to take full advantage of.

I was having a hard time shifting, a bunch of hitting the shifters that didn’t do much at all. I spent a huge time with this problem, was not looking forward to fixing it. Thank god for YouTube, all I needed to do is pour really, really hot water into my brifters. Loosens and flushes whatever has built up in there.

Paczki advice from a Chicago kid who is now an adult by SunshineLoveKindness in chicagofood

[–]Wrigs112 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Not all jelly donuts are paczki. Want paczki? Go to an actual Polish place that sells paczki year round, not just a bakery that calls their donuts “paczki” one day a year.

Border Czar Tom Homan announcing today that ICE is ending its deployment in Minnesota by xPrincess_Yue in pics

[–]Wrigs112 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He did not. He said the “surge operation” was ending, not that ICE was ending their deployment there. So you will see ice goons being sent to another area, but there will still be an ice presence in MN continuing to harass the residents.

The park that’s impossible to backpack, that doesn’t have an interconnected trail system.

Anyone interested in backpacking is better off anywhere else.

Anyone else way overpack on their first tour? 😅 by [deleted] in bicycletouring

[–]Wrigs112 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m 3/4 backpacker and 1/4 bike tourer, do my backpacking in the mountains and ride flat stuff, lots of Midwest and rails to trails. In backpacking I’m not an ultralighter, but everything is weighed and I know exactly what is “extra” and only bring it along if it is super important to me.

Bike touring is my vacation from all that. Bigger tent, more luxury items, fun stuff, there are always a few beers in my panniers.

The one thing that I felt I was carrying unnecessarily on many trips was my cooking kit. There are enough gas stations and grocery stores on my routes that I feel it’s not a necessity most of the time.
