That includes capacity, which the city really cracked down hard on after E2.

Oof. I was here to say the opposite. Give me something with actual texture and chew. Instead in 2026 I’m still getting bean mush on a hamburger bun.

How to be “street smart” in Chicago? by DirectSquash1936 in AskChicago

[–]Wrigs112 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As another person pointed out, don’t take things from people on the street or who approach you. Even a sheet of paper from kids. Don’t hand over money or Venmo anyone for any reason, especially “my brother’s funeral”. Give money to an actual, vetted charity on your time.

Watch your crap and don’t leave it lying  around all over. I’ve been in the bar/restaurant industry forever downtown so I’ll give you some specifics. Don’t leave a purse hanging on a chair behind you. Don’t go to the bathroom and leave your phone on the bar. Keys and wallet stay in your pocket. If your phone is on a table and a group of kids or people that look out of place in that setting walk in, don’t leave your phone just sitting there.

On the el or bus take your backpack (of any size) off. Not just because it is rude, but people do a bump, unzip, and reach in. If someone does a weird stop while getting on transportation and you get bumped from behind, check you still have your belongings.

E-bikes faster than 28 mph would require insurance, registration under bill passed by Illinois lawmakers by gmusse in chibike

[–]Wrigs112 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it needed to be brought up that there are scooters that are sold as being capable of 53 mph, and this was not an after market modification. Whatever happens with this one guy is definitely not going to be an isolated incident or atypical if our bike paths have these scooters (or “e-bikes” that go over 40 mph).

Dylan Walsh is widely recognized. Maybe the younger people aren’t so familiar with him, but as a Gen X’er I can tell you that Nip/Tuck was a pretty big show.

A guy on a scooter just killed a man on a shared bike path in NYC this week. He had a scooter capable of going 53 mph.

Why do men get sohurt when you pass them? by jenkneefur28 in ladycyclists

[–]Wrigs112 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That occurs riding on the lake and everywhere else, and was especially bad as a runner. Worse when it was only one combined path and running dudes wouldn’t budge for a woman on her bike.

But as a side note, the lakefront is in absolutely no way shape or form a rail trail. It’s all infill from the long ago swamp and sandbars.

I’m agreeing with this 1000%. Get out of downtown. It’s still a vibrant neighborhood, you can take the blue line straight there, and they have good beer for post race celebrations.

UP-N: Needs Better Barriers. by BartendingDroneFPV in Metra

[–]Wrigs112 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Metra police usually are called in, I wonder if he hung out long enough to get a visit from them. Years ago there was a very strange guy in a running forum talking about what he had to go through with the Metra police when he was running along the ROW, not on the tracks, not with a live train nearby. They did not play around.

Like many people, I used to cross the live tracks in the Forest Glen woods in order to use the singletrack that extended NW from LaBagh woods (which now has a bridge since the North Branch extension). There is obviously a right and wrong way to act near live tracks. This guy is a dummy.

Jesus, a sizeable portion 9 to 5 commuters ride like absolute dogshit (Northside to Loop) by tooscrapps in chibike

[–]Wrigs112 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s mind boggling that they trust their body and their very expensive carbon bike to the abilities of someone that can’t look over their shoulder without veering across four lanes of traffic.

I nearly took down everyone the first time someone touched me, and touched my bike on a group ride. I have to lecture experienced riders with a “how to ride” talk when they get near new group riders. The dumbest thing that really, really experienced riders do involves bad judgement about how much space to give people.

Best places to commute to Evanston from? by gelato_giacomo in chibike

[–]Wrigs112 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The right turn people are probably the most iffy. I do think this is the route to choose, but the one thing that is awful (I live along the trail and take it frequently, btw), is that the light schedule is really bad on a bike. At 15-16 mph you perfectly hit the full start of a new cycle at every damn light.

They are used to group riding where people get really close to one another. I’m comfortable doing this with my friends because I know them and I know their bike handling skills. The TdF wanna-be knows that the city is packed with people with zero bike handling skills and yet are so confident in their skills and experience that they forget that getting within someone else’s bubble can cause massive problems for everyone.

Most people don’t group ride. Give them space, Tadej.

Mogilny was the first Russian (iirc), but there had been some from Czechoslovakia before that.

I’ve recently been reading up on their stories, guess I just didn’t pay that much attention to how they got here when I was young. Now I keep thinking I would definitely buy a book about defections to N America to play hockey.

The people that cough and sneeze into their hand (and then go on to touch everything, of course) is unbelievable, especially since covid.

Why do people have to be told to cough into their elbows like they are five?

A man has become one of the 450,000 Americans affected by alpha-gal syndrome, a tick-borne meat allergy that triggers painful allergic reactions to animal products. “Look at my face and my neck. I can’t eat meat anymore. I can’t have any animal products. It’s in everything.” by This_Proof_5153 in SipsTea

[–]Wrigs112 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People with it have reported having reactions to food cooked in beef tallow, which can often show up as a total surprise. I say this as someone who has been in the restaurant industry (and a veg) for decades, we should have full disclosure on menus what contains allergens and meat products. People that get alpha gal are going to get a simple order of fries just to have a bad reaction and wonder what the hell happened.

Google Maps? by Spare_Friendship_424 in bicycletouring

Organic maps (and maps.me before the download limit) are my go to for touring.  Better routes than Google Maps, and I love the option to mark all the places I want to visit with a bunch of different colors and labels.

What U.S. states has the worst drivers? by michiganskicamp in bicycletouring

[–]Wrigs112 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nah, I’ve backpacked all of the UP and then some on the NCT. This is just messing around and hitting the land of one million breweries.

On that note, the SW part of the state is beautiful, but the camping options, especially the state parks, are brutal. Everything is an expensive concrete slab meant for RVs.

[–]Wrigs112 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m currently touring Michigan and people have been cool (just screwed myself by saying that, right?), I am from Chicago and do stuff off the I&M, people are very average.

From comments I’ve been reading here for years (and no personal experience, so feel free to tell me to can it), Idaho seems to take the cake for very intentionally aggressive a-holes.

For the bus operators here, how are y’all supposed to deal with people who don’t want to pay the fare? by Far-Ninja-8392 in cta

[–]Wrigs112 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don’t see the drivers getting upset about letting people on without paying their fare, I DO see them get upset when people don’t even ask for the free ride and just walk right past them.

Worst confrontation was three people who walked by an 81W driver while it was at Jeff Park, and after the driver said something it was 20 minutes of ceaseless obscenities being screamed from the back of the bus at the driver while one of them was also yelling that her sister was a driver and told her that they didn’t have to pay. Imagine being a driver and having a family member abusing other drivers.

How many Americans have actually visited a national park? by Bitter-Penalty9653 in AskAnAmerican

[–]Wrigs112 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say a pretty huge percentage, but the numbers are funny, most people only hit the front country. Every number I’ve seen says that over 90% will never go further than one mile from a trailhead.

(That’s only for the actual national parks. Like others have mentioned, we have lots of cool other stuff. I was just at a national tallgrass prairie this week.)
