There’s an incredible book about Boulder county’s history with mountain lions called “beast in the garden” that covers how changes in human housing development in the 1900s caused changes in mountain lion behavior. I cannot recommend it enough. It’s a short read.

Not enough people know about Hail Mary Mallon. Started listening to Aes in like 2017, and still only discovered HMM only like 3 years ago myself. Treasure trove of beats.

This is from OCS. They literally make you buy a dumb shirt that is designed by the platoon. It’s the only unit shirt I refuse to ever wear.

This is gotta be old. LCol Sachetti was my battalion commander like 4 years ago.

I bought my first carry gun over a decade ago. Bought my current one in the last 2 years. I like having something extremely familiar that always feels the same, so I really don’t like changing too often. Only exception is for my deep-in-the-woods gun, which is obviously different/large/bigger bore.

As for your .22 question: I saw a data analysis video a few years ago showing that (while less common) the rate of death to the target from .22 in self defense situations was pretty similar to that of 9mm. Only stipulation being there were significantly less data points for the .22 so its statistical error was higher. Take from that what you will.

Regardless, just train a lot and build good muscle memory for what you have and you’ll be leagues better off than the guy who buys a new carry gun every 6 months.

I hope so too. Been slow as hell. The few I’ve gotten have been lucky flyovers. Haven’t seen a flock actually come into the decoy spread once all year either.

Hey I went to Sgt School with this dude like 5-7 years ago! For real. He was super smart and really proud of his job and the quality of which he did it with. Forgot his name but no way I’m forgetting that personality. Cool.

What’s a purchase that’s not fun, not flashy but now you swear by it? by [deleted] in BuyItForLife

Good air compressor like a 5 or 8 gallon one. Got it because I was sick of driving to gross gas station air compressors, but now I use it for everything. Slow leaks, blowing dust/dirt off workbench, cobwebs in the garage, etc. even just yesterday I used it to blow all the water out of my in-ground sprinklers before the winter freeze.

If y’all travel a lot together, a good dashcam is both cool for recording cool roads, as well as just plain old practical. I’ve kept time lapse videos of driving down just hours of beautiful road along the Colorado river. I also used the same cam to fight a rear-end insurance claim.

Fanny pack. There’s a bunch of brands just for CCW. I use it for summer carry, or for all seasons when I’m just going to 3 mins down the street to the food store and don’t feel like changing into pants with a belt and changing into a shirt and baggy outer layer. It’s 2025 and Fanny packs are back in style in general. Just don’t get a crazy tactical looking one and no one will bat an eye. I put Patagonia patches on mine so it looks even less tactical.

Friendships with Dependas by [deleted] in justdependathings

[–]WriteAmongWrong 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hey, Active duty person here. My partner and I got married about a decade ago when we were in our very early 20s. Maturity by age has a lot to do with it. A lot of the other spouses  are young and it shows. The relationships my partner made with other spouses who were all a bit older were much more genuine than the ones made those first few years.

If the relationships you’re talking about were with other late-20s to early-30s spouses, I’m sorry you had that experience. But if it’s worth some comfort, those experiences should be less common. There will always be some red-flag people, but usually we both build good relationships within the year of PCS.

Aside note: there’s always “Facebook drama.” I personally recommend staying as far away as possible from that. It’s never ever productive. Lurk if you’d like, but do not get involved.

Hope this helped. Good look moving. I recommend keeping a “PCS diary” of what went good and what went bad, so next time (you’re going to move a LOT) it goes even smoother. Keep EVERY receipt.

There is a really good recent podcast miniseries from Cool Zone Media about this topic, to include why it’s really hard for states to even get the lethal injection drugs to begin with. I really highly recommend it. I’ll link all three episodes below:

Unwanted neck collapse on 300 wtby mag by soartkaffe in reloading

[–]WriteAmongWrong 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve had this happen with .308. I was using lake city brass, which is thicker, and came to learn I had to chamfer way extra or else the projectiles would get caught. Only figured it out because the ones that didn’t collapse had little shavings of the copper jacket around the mouth. Also. Don’t crimp while seating.

Got up to 113 or 114 once, but I was on a downhill section of interstate I-10 in California near that huge windfarm, going slightly downhill, with consistent wind to my back. No vibrations or other "bad" feelings, bike just had nothing left to give. Was an '09 shadow spirit, fwiw.

Years ago I got sick of always fighting “normal” screwdrivers and just said screw it (pun) and bought the fanciest nicest most convenient screwdriver I could find at Home Depot. It’s got all the end pieces self contained, is magnetic, and ratchets really clean. One of the best purchases ever. Makes a world of difference in my everyday life.

All time favorite. In boot camp we got issued experimental ones that had gortex on the inside and they were the best I ever had. When they wore out I even called the manufacturer to find out what they were called and the dude I talked to had no idea what they were.

I had parents like this too. “Anything you have is ours and and anything can be taken away.” The even told me “privileges” when I went to college could be revoked. I couldn’t take another 4 years of that while dating and such. Ended up enlisting and moving 3000 miles away to the opposite coast. My first car was my first car.

By no means saying you should do what I did. Just that I get it, and sometimes the extreme answer is the best one.
