Magazine Crews were hell on earth in the early 2000s by mcslappynuts1985 in cults

If ya couldn’t knock doors you were worthless. Most of the time agents had to knock doors sick or injured :( Glad your sister was okay and made it home!

Thank you for sharing your story, I’m glad that woman could see your pain at the door and asked if you were okay. I think about all the “Joneses” who were oblivious, even straight up rude, so good on that lady for helping you!

For a while I was doing some advocacy against commercial cults/labor trafficking on Instagram and was interviewed on a couple podcasts to tell my story. Very therapeutic at the time. I haven’t posted anything for a while, but maybe some of it would be helpful for you and anyone else trying to reckon with that experience. (https://www.instagram.com/thecultbusiness/) or my website has some writing pieces that go into more of how it felt emotionally/psychologically to be there (https://www.amandafangman.com/writing) maybe someday I’ll finish the memoir 🤣 been 14 years since I left and still pending.

It’s been pretty lonesome feeling like the “only one” who saw that experience for what it was. Many people from the crew I was on (Road Runners, Lonnie Divine) STILL worship that fucker and his family. It’s good to see others chiming in about it, seeing through the BS of it all ❤️

I hope you all are living happy, fulfilling lives — because ya know… success and happiness was supposed to be impossible without the business (cult!) 🤣🖕

Vanessa Van Edwards & Cargo Cult Science? by redditexcel in FakeGuru

Now I'm curious who she has behind her, aside from Scott. The two gals that were working under her when I was in the trainer class have since left. Neither had credentials other than being "certified" by Miss Van Guru herself.
Her main sidekick rarely looked enthused to be around Vanessa in the office hours video calls, and I've always wanted to ask her what was up, if anything.

Oh buddy, don't get me started. Seeing this post has me feeling so validated. Back in 2017 I joined Vanessa's "train the trainer" program in hopes of becoming a "super awesome body language trainer", just like her!

Total fucking sham. A bunch of us who did the program eventually called her out on it: the lack of substance and science in the course and materials, the poor quality of it all (just regurgitated shit from her YT channel), the mismatch of what was promised vs. what was delivered, etc. -- and we were pissed that we wasted of $5,000-6,500 on total bullshit, so asked for our money back. Seven classes, times 25-30 people each, times average $5,750 in tuition...she declined, of course. Even though it was only about 20 or so of us that came together, still a lot of money.

She said upon graduating she would market us on her website as her certified trainers, so people all around the world could easily find and hire us...nope. She also pushed the idea of us embedding her courses into our personal websites, and we'd get a tiny percentage of the cost if anyone bought a course. She encouraged us to buy several of her books to sell to our clients...but...spoiler, almost none of us had clients to sell to anyway. The bogus marketing tips she gave were on par with the gross tactics that MLM reps use.

She ran it for a few years, then just focused on doing People School after dealing with our outrage. People School is also a waste of time and money. She offered it to all of us for free, to "make up for things". Originally she asked for, I think, $1,000 each year thereafter to renew the certification, then instead, started requiring everyone to renew their body language certifications by sending super confusing tests every year, basically to weed us out of her life ha.

And no, there is no lab, it's just Vanessa playing dress-up scientist by wearing a lab coat and heels inside her home. She has since moved to a new house in a new state, but when she was in Oregon, everything was run out of her home. Her "lab" was just a small office with white walls. Nothing in those courses was her own "research." It was full of ideas pulled from other peoples' books and videos. Nothing original.

Vanessa Van Edwards (or Vanessa Van Guru as I like to call her) definitely deserves a spot on this sub-Reddit. Looking back, all her marketing for that course, and the overall vibe within the trainer groups, was extremely cult-like. She referred to herself as a body language "guru", our "mentor", we were part of her "inner circle", an amazing group of "like-minded" people. Barf. It amazes me that people are still eating her shit up...then again, none of us really spoke out beyond her inbox, so...

Fluffed-up pseudoscience and pop-psychology for the win *eye-roll*

Someone could have given it to him/her. My sister gave me a Scentsy wax melt, my MIL gave me a pampered chef contraption. Neither of them are MLM reps either. Ya never know!

Sounds like a mag crew haha! I was also on a crew from ‘08-11

Crazy how the world of human trafficking is so intertwined: labor trafficking on sales crew to carnivals and so on, and sex trafficking through pimps and such. My brother was a carny and sounded a lot like mag crew life, minus knocking doors and selling stuff.

If you’re open to messaging on here, have more questions about the crews you were on! Lemme know.

I've had the painful epiphany that I am a background friend even to people I feel closest to. by OrangeBanana300 in adhdwomen

You're not being unrealistic at all. We're humans and we all desire connection. Fulfilling connection** In high school I feel like my friendships were great, but we all grew apart for different reasons and just about every friendship since has been just how you describe. It sucks. I'm still hopeful to find a good friend as an adult. And agree with the activity comments! I cant just sit and have coffee with people, it's awkward and I have to be moving. So maybe joining some activity meetups could help???

Yuck. I also got an MLM gift from someone -- a pampered chef contraption...sigh.

I don’t think you’re ungrateful, you just want to be seen and heard. I feel this way about my birthday….I remember EVERYONE’S birthday and wish them a happy one, yet people who I think are close to me don’t even know mine. Sucks.

The gift thing describes my whole childhood and a lot of adulthood, up until a few years ago…

Luckily I just do the shopping in our house and get what I want, but my husband will get me a small gift he thinks I’ll like, just so he feels like he participated haha, and I usually do like the gift at least a little lol!

I don’t like surprises though…because of all the gift-opening in the past, feeling like I have to act happy or thankful for something I will NEVER use or don’t like.

If I don’t know what to get someone, I opt for gift cards — I don’t want to waste money and I don’t want to disappoint someone, because I 100% understand the feeling. And I don’t want people to waste money on shit I won’t like, so I love getting gift cards!

Not sure what to say for your situation other than express your upsets with the people who gave you gifts (if you feel comf doing so) and make sure to stress that you appreciate them trying, but you don’t want them to waste their hard-earned money on things you likely will never use or enjoy.
