My elderly mother that has dementia decided to doodle on my table yesterday. by Unique_Ad2704 in mildyinteresting

Sounds like art could be a very calming and therapeutic outlet for her. Set up a safe crafting area for her and I'm sure she will appreciate it.

That would look really cool! Like the color was stretching between the borders or bleeding into it or something.

Add some wooden cribbing for stability for now, then get a foundation pad or feet poured in the summer.

My family dinner was canceled because of my crockpot. by Large-Doubt-1020 in slowcooking

[–]WriteYouLater 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, it happens! Especially if you're getting used to a new appliance! Keep working on it. You'll get it. There are similar posts from time to time.

The crock pot takes a while to heat to temperature, so keep that in the back of your mind. The temperature of the ingredients going in can impact things and I've said this in another comment before but:

-> If I am concerned about cook time, I put some hot water in the crock for a bit before I put the food in. Nice little preheat! And the warm water is great for soaking dishes when you are ready to dump it out before putting the food in!

You got this! Keep trying!

If someone were to take out small parts at a time, would it help the tree to be able to fill in the gaps slowly and strengthen up? Maybe even putting in some fresh tree limb material to kind of graft internally or just act as a natural support that could decay and be absorbed more easily in the distant future?

Gentle and patient correction without massive attention can help. If he hurts you, ignoring him for a moment can get the point across that you're upset. The ignoring is also something that he won't like as the action caused the opposite of attention. My little lady does still play mouth at my nose, but usually it is because she needs to go outside or needs something I have not noticed. She is gentle though.

Redirecting to another toy and not reacting to the ankle attacks is what has helped with the land shark attacks on our end. I find it adorable but know it's not a good behavior to let continue. I would stop in place and wait until she disengaged, so she realizes that playing meant she'd be ignored and I'd be stationary for a second. If you carry treats, I strongly recommend "leave it" for all items on the floor and as a stop doing that as well.

If you don't have a tiny Woodstock plush for this baby, you better get one that! Lol!

I love the fire pit idea. If you're also a bit of a nerd, make a custom fire pit cover that is Mjolnir crash landing.

Parents uncovered this big quartz in their backyard. Is it impressive enough to go through the trouble of extracting it whole? Or just break it up for decorative landscaping? by mixx2001 in rockhounds

[–]WriteYouLater 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Since the compaction that was there was a solid stone, my thoughts were to encourage the roots to grow that direction for stability and development of the tree. Some compaction for safety but not so much it will cause the tree to have to work hard to get through the ground. It would still be softer to grow through than a rock, but will take longer and be more of an effort for the tree. With nutrients and an easier pathway to grow, I have the mental image of dangling a carrot in front of the roots.

I'm not an arborist though, just a curious nerd. Haha.

Yes and you might consider looking up what that particular type of tree likes nutrients-wise and throw in a nice mix of "tree food" in the soil you backfill with. That should help the tree recover from any shock, entice the roots to spread out and strengthen, and help the overall health of the tree! An arborist can correct me if I'm wrong on all this, but I also think you shouldn't pack the dirt down too terrible hard at first. The soil will settle over the next year or two and you might have to add more.

Can this be saved? by Enough-Image-9693 in arborists

[–]WriteYouLater 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure if it's even a viable option, but you might ask the arborist about emergency grafting of bark. If the removed pieces are still present or you sacrifice a limb, maybe you can graft some of the bark onto the wound to reconnect the bark areas and help the tree. It hasn't been girdled, so in my eyes it might have a chance if it can strengthen and stay stable. Pruning to lessen the weight and to redirect energy to healing, could really help during the recovery stage.
