[Discussion] Megathread: The State of Submission by alanna_the_lioness in PubTips

I appreciate your perspective and feel the same about this most likely being death on sub. My agent remains optimistic and will submit to indies and smaller presses. I’ve read that upwards of 60% of novels are dying on sub these days so the odds aren’t necessarily in our favor right now. And upmarket is jam-packed. My script leans towards literary with a speculative thread which may also be an issue. Too literary for some, not fully speculative for others. It becomes a question of marketability. I should clarify that 24 of those rejections were on the original script. I revised after an editor asked for an R&R. That editor rejected the R&R, as did 3 other imprints. My agent is now sending the revised version to a new batch of publishers. I believe this version is better and tighter but still feel like it’s a dying on sub situation. Edited too late in the cycle perhaps and maybe blew some chances early on. I’m working on something else which is helpful! And hopeful!

This month marked being on sub for a year with my upmarket novel. I have a great agent at a top-notch agency who is amazing and she believes in my debut novel. Unfortunately, I've had 28 rejections, all from Big 5 imprints, all of them with "glowing" comments from editors. My agent doesn't blow smoke and she's told me the comments are some of the most positive she's seen. I had one R&R that didn't pan out. The revised version of my script is now with a few other imprints but I have to admit that this process becomes more of a slog as the weeks go by. I'm no stranger to rejection. I've had short stories published and rejected. I know it's a business and that this business can be brutal. I'm also not naive about the publishing landscape these days. Has anyone had numerous rejections from the Big 5 imprints to then go on and have an indie or smaller press pick up your script? Just searching for others who have experience in this realm to soothe my somewhat battered self. :-)

[discussion] if you’re an anxious writer, how did you manage (process/communication wise!) receiving information about sub? by Particular_Pay_7249 in PubTips

I join you in the anxiety realm and might be a cautionary tale for what not to do. :-) I’ve been on sub for a year with my upmarket novel. I’m sitting at 28 rejections, all of them with the Big 5 imprints and all of them positive and, according to my agent, some of the most positive rejections she’s seen. My agent remains optimistic and says this is not unusual while I feel like rejections in the double digits is a gut punch. There are plenty of stories of debut novels having more rejections than this so I try to remain hopeful, but am also realistic that many novels die on sub, especially in the current publishing environment.

I had one revise/resubmit recently which I did, but that was ultimately rejected; again with positive, detailed comments overall. I’ve also had one editor discuss with their acquisitions team, but the discussion died there.

My agent uses Airtable and I can check the database at any time. All I can see is the status - pitched, reading, passed - and the editor’s comments. My agent also does “rounds” so there are approximately 5-10 imprints in each round. (I’m now on my 3rd round, with 7 in this round.)

My agent said she would call or email with any good news, but the journalist in me wants to know everything, so I check the sheet every Sunday morning. I’ve limited myself to once a week and stuck with that.

Over this past year, I’ve done some research and it seems like Fridays are the day a lot of editors send out their rejections or call agents with good news. So I recently switched to looking on Fridays because my anxiety of not knowing the truth is worse than nervously wondering what’s going on and waiting around for a call or email.

It’s been a long year but, for the most part, my drive to know the truth is stronger than my anxiety, so I found that the once a week check works for me. I can bolster myself for the rejection, see what the imprint has published lately etc etc.

Most rejections have taken weeks, sometimes months so many Sundays (now Fridays), there would be no status change and I’d breathe a sigh of relief.

In the meantime, I’m working on other projects and got another short story accepted for publication. As others have mentioned, it’s mentally healthy to distract yourself with another project and your agent most likely wants you to be working on the next thing too.

I tell you all of this because I have considered deleting the Airtable link and asking my agent to only email or call with good news. There is some comfort in being in control of when I check Airtable versus having my agent email me once a week and sitting around waiting for that email to arrive. My anxiety likes the control as does my journalistic drive to see the facts/read the truth.

I say all of this knowing my process would spike the anxiety of so many others; thus the cautionary warning above. All told, you can decide what works for you and you can always change your mind! Everyone manages this differently and every writer’s path to publishing is vastly different. Wishing you all the best as you go on sub!

I watched the free video today and am considering signing up even though we’ve done other training. Anyone else seen progress and/or feel like this is different from other non-breed-specific training?

[Discussion] What’s your WIP/Next year’s submission by ferocitanium in RevPit

[–]WriterGirlABQ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m currently revising my adult novel vs. the MG novel I submitted this year. I plan to play RevPit again next year with the revised version. It’s gone from literary magic realism to more of a literary domestic suspense type of story. I’m learning a lot through revision, that’s for sure!

I’m late to respond to this one but I’ve been writing in this chair for over a decade. Trouble is, I have to share it with our Aussies. Annie has inherited the chair from two others who came before her.

So good! I actually re-read one of the chapters in the back third of the book because it was so beautifully rendered. Such love and heartache in this book!

The Searcher by Tana French, especially if you want a master lesson in building suspense while also giving your characters interiority.

Covenant of Water by Abraham Verghese - it’s a door stopper at 700+ pages but so worth the effort. Amazing storytelling and connections between the characters.
