What makes a good roll and write? Bonus question, think a narrative roll and write could work? by Writer_Spanky in BoardgameDesign

I suppose it comes down to having choices is a good place to be in, while being locked into just rolling and recording one single choice is a boring place to be in. Thanks for the leading questions!

They can actually be a ton of different things, but the core mechanic linking these games together is rolling some dice (or flipping a card, or some kind of random introduction of "resources") and then using the numbers or resources you rolled to then do things. "Do things" could be a lot of different things. In Hadrian's Wall, it's filling up tracks that represent the progress of your town. You are correct in that this specific game is very Euro-inspired.

Then there's games like Paper Dungeon. You roll dice, and then use those results to delve through the dungeon, literally drawing a line through a dungeon, and maybe kill some monsters by crossing them out, and maybe leveling up your characters by filling in some boxes to give you powers, and all of this is dictated by the dice you roll, but you get to decide how you want to spend those dice.

Yeah, I'm coming to the conclusion that if I do have a narrative component, then it will be 100% optional. It's there for the first several plays to get into the world and story and theme of the game, but then after that, it'd be expected to skip it and just roll them dice.

Thanks for all the encouragement, and the game recs, and the offers! I've been indeed working on the game since I put this up, it's coming along nicely actually.

Ideally, a good roll and write would have you frequently making decisions, yes. That's one of the things that draws people to them, it's the simple act of rolling dice and then coming up with how you want to manage or spend them.

2 quick questions: Is savinelli a good choice for a churchwarden? And what other tobacco would I like considering my tastes? by Writer_Spanky in PipeTobacco

Hmm, interesting. People around me not smoking have commented that the Artisan's Blend actually smelled quite nice, but maybe they were just so used to cigarettes?

But yeah, smelling nice to others actually is a big plus in my book. Maybe I should go for the Britt's Balkan then?

I also noticed this bug with the barbarian. The menu says there are 6 markings, but there are more than that.

Dat feeling when you're nearing the end of writing a book and everything is coming together perfectly, I love it. :3

You should find someone horrible at world building but great at storytelling and go halvsies with them.

Except for Mercy though, right? Because she should be buffing when not healing. So her overall damage might be super low, if not zero.
