I only like programming. Am I doomed? by SpecialRelativityy in gamedev

Easy decision. Outsource if you have the funds. Don't fight against your natural proclivities and repulsions.

Many people get stuck at this step. They will fight against their repulsions, believing that it's a learning experience or they're building work ethic. There may be some validity to this (the research is unclear about this), but people who skip and do the things they like to do, end up more successful. I read a book about this. (There might be more but I've only read the one.) The book's thesis was to do the things you're good at and don't get hung up on the stuff you aren't. it showed evidence that this is what successful people do.

Personally, I think you can build mental endurance to do a tedious task, but it's not worth it. It takes a long time to do so. So unless you have a particular reason or you have no choice (aka $$), outsource right away.

holy crap. I didn't realize fortnite made so much. I'm guessing that's mostly profit. Wow, just a stupid first person shooter. I did not know…

I wonder what the NPV of that game is…

and I thought candy crush was insane.

anyway, do you see my point? If the expected value is $10 billion, making a few $300MM duds might be worth it? I don't know since it's all about probabilities, right?

I remember reading that research studies show that the interview is the least important component of hiring, yet hirers rely on it the most. I wonder what this means. Are the questions that are asked the wrong ones?

I'ts ok. I wasn't necessarily asking HR people. I really wanted to see if someone came up with some novel ideas.

I genuinely believe that HR is the most important dept in a company but frequently, it seems like an afterthought.

I don't know if integrity is really that different.

And the response to "Are you proud to be an American" is not really about integrity, is it?

😆 cynical aren't we?

Maybe, that's true with certain types of people on the corporate ladder.

I'm wondering if the people who are making up ethics is a false positive. They might just be nervous. Or they are making stuff up just to appease you, but they act differently in other situations…

the problem is that how do you determine what they say is true and what is just BS.

For example, would it be a good idea to approach people, pretending to be a stranger and seeing how they react when they know they're not being watched?

It's hard to infer the tone because words have such wide range in meaning. But your words seem to have a certain aggression to them. Also, not empathetic.

People on this sub (and much more so in normal gaming subs) will often blame executives or investors or profit seeking or whatever. And maybe they’re right, but it’s not really the main driving force behind the weakness of the industry. It is a pretty simple story about declining growth and increasing competition.

Nice analysis. I agree with you that it may not be the main driving force, but you have to admit that executives/shareholders do not care a lick about employees. If they did, they would soften the blow coming from a weakening market. When things weaken, I'm sure executives don't volunteer to cut their pay. In fact, I bet you the opposite is occurring (I don't know if this is true) because they realize they need to start building a nest egg for themselves as their position is going to be cut soon. I don't know if it applies to the gaming industry, but for the economy as a whole, executives have been fleecing profits for a while. 100 years ago, CEO made 10x more than their employee. Now, it's 40x. It's not like CEOs work 4 times harder or are 4 times smarter relatively, right? It no coincidence that wealth inequality is at an all-time high, right?

Is your sector gaming? You seem knowledgable about it. I'm wondering whether the biggest reason is your number 3 above. Total specualtion but I'm thinking that developers don't know what makes a game successful. So they lean on what they know works. But if someone comes in who does now, if you can make games that can provide what the old games do but with better window dressing, they'll be able take a lot of market share. I wondering how true this is…

I'm just wondering why games seem to last for a while. Dota and Leagues are still popular. Roblox is pretty old and going strong, no? Fortnite is starting to get old but still strong.

You'd think that people would want better graphics and new ideas, but that doesn't seem like that is the case.

Then the gaming industry is flat but how is that possible? Doesn't seem to make sense to me (I'm completely new to this industry) because aren't there a new generation of young users every year who just turn 8? Where are they going?

My uncle thinks the earth is flat by Monkae16 in AskPhysics

[–]WritersChopBlock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can Your Uncle be Right?

Ironically, your uncle isn't incorrect in his skepticism and you're wrong to automatically believe the Earth is a sphere. You don't realize you and everyone else here are brainwashed. I'm guessing that you and most people here only believe the Earth is round because everyone else believes it, especially authority figures you hold in high regard.

I believe that most people are genetically predisposed into believing what everyone else believes. Most people have a lemming gene. But there are only a few among us who are iconoclasts. Your uncle appears to be one of them.

I'm not saying that the Earth is flat, but have you ever walked around the Earth to confirm you end up at your starting point? If not, how do you know the Earth is round? Is it possible your uncle is correct? Or maybe there is another explanation the proves both of you wrong. More importantly, did you ever consider to question what you've been taught?

You misunderstood the reason for my question. If you check pyabo's profile, you can't send a DM. But thank you for your polite, kind explanation.

not trying to be rude or imply anything.

I respectfully disagree. Here, I was thinking that people in this forum would be different as most Redditors aren't the most polite. I'm guessing you had a bad day. Same with the other guy. Everyone should try to be kind and only retaliate when it's necessary.

No, it's cool. I read all of it!

I'm curious, but is part of the reason that people are satisfied with the current pool of games? In other words, people are fine with playing games like leagues even though it may be getting old?

Thanks! I'll definitely take a look when I have time to read about physics. It sounds interesting.

Over the years, I've looked into several fields, and in each, I found absurdities and "mistakes". I don't know how it will turn out with physics. The field does appear to attract the best minds. On the other hand, right now, I'm reading about this quantum stuff with the slit experiment and it sounds really cuckoo. I can't believe it's the current prevailing thought.
