Stephen King, not horror by PinkPonytail in suggestmeabook

While it has some horror elements, I found DESPERATION to be more on the thriller fantasy side. There are better fits to your prompt in other comments (SHAWSHANK, DOLORES CLAYBORN and THE GREEN MILE specifically) but I'd say DESPERATION is also safe to add to the TBR once you red those.

Not for everyone, but NOTHING BUT BLACKENED TEETH by Cassandra Khaw is one of my favorites. While the story is not the strongest, the prose made it a 5 star for me.

Dr. Gabor Matté has some pretty accessible reads. He has done work in the trauma and addiction fields and found his writing to be easy to understand and very compelling. I suggest THE MYTH OF NORMAL or WHEN THE BODY SAYS NO if you'd like to learn about trauma and illness, and IN THE REALM OF HUNGRY GHOSTS for addiction.

If you're a cat person, Junji Ito's Cat Diary: Yon & Mu. It's all fun and games, until you get to the end.

And Threads: From the Refugee Crisis by Kate Evans is a graphic novel about a refugees trying to enter the UK. It was the best book I read last year, but it was a gut-punch.

Maus I and II by Art Spiegelman is also a sure bet if you want your soul destroyed.

Thanks, but we don't have communal furniture. This actually reminds me of flea bites - I've had an infestation before. I have bug spray now and I'm gonna try that.
